FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We'll be dodging downpours through this Tuesday evening as spotty rain continues to roam in from the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the rain may be quite heavy, and a few of these downpours could also produce lightning along with gusty winds.

We'll keep rain chances in play through the overnight into Wednesday morning as our winds continue to come in from the Gulf, which is a weather pattern that favors morning showers.

Aside from seeing scattered rain through the next couple of days, expect a partly sunny sky with temperatures topping out in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Some isolated rain will be possible again Thursday morning, and then we transition into seeing more of an afternoon storm pattern by Friday and into the upcoming weekend.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We're tracking a tropical wave in the central Atlantic that's been becoming better organized over the last couple of days.

It's a good possibility that this feature will develop into a tropical depression or perhaps even a tropical storm over the next couple days.

The track through the end of the week will be west and northwest, taking this feature toward the Windward Islands by the weekend.

Most forecast models suggest this storm eventually curve to the north by next week, which would keep the storm away from the U.S. mainland. Return to index of stories...

AT 34 YEARS OLD. STACEY ESCALANTE WAS, IN HER WORDS, AT THE TOP OF HER GAME -- A SUCCESSFUL TELEVISION NEWS REPORTER IN LAS VEGAS.

THE BUSY MOTHER OF TWO WAS EVEN TRAINING FOR A MARATHON.

IT WAS A PROBLEM -- STAGE III MELANOMA. THAT SPREAD TO HER LYMPH NODES.

CASES LIKE STACEY'S ARE WHY ACTING SURGEON GENERAL BORIS LUSHNIAK HAS ISSUED A "CALL TO ACTION" TO PREVENT SKIN CANCER.

"Skin cancer rates are increasing in this country, and it's become a public health crisis."

63-THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH MELANOMA EACH YEAR. AND OF THOSE 9-THOUSAND DIE. EXPERTS SAY U-V RADIATION FROM SUNLIGHT OR TANNING BEDS IS THE BIGGEST CAUSE.

DOCTORS SAY CONSUMERS NEED TO BE VIGILANT ABOUT USING A BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN. AND REAPPLY IT EVERY FEW HOURS.

LUSHNIAK ALSO SUPPORTS LEGISLATION BANNING TEENAGERS FROM VISITING TANNING SALONS.

"There's 10 states out there now who have put in legislation that bans the use of indoor tanning facilities for those under the age of 18. We certainly support those measures to be able to protect the youth from a known carcinogen."

IN A STATEMENT -- THE INDOOR TANNING ASSOCIATION DISPUTES WHAT MANY EXPERTS SAY -- STATING, "there is no consensus among researchers regarding the relationship between melanoma skin cancer and UV exposure either from the sun or a sunbed."

NINE YEARS LATER -- STACEY IS CANCER-FREE -- BUT DEEPLY SCARRED.
