FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

ANOTHER ROUND OF OFF AND ON DOWNPOURS TODAY

As our winds continue to come in from the Gulf of Mexico today, we'll keep the chance for passing downpours to wash ashore and work their way eastward across Southwest Florida again today. We'll see some of those downpours through the morning, but the door remains open for rain at any time today.

Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the upper 80s at the beaches to the lower 90s inland. With humidity it will once again feel like we are near 100 degrees. Other than the passing downpours, our skies will be partly sunny.

Some isolated showers will wash ashore again tomorrow morning and through the day tomorrow. Then we transition toward more of an afternoon storm pattern by Friday and into the upcoming weekend. Highs will stay in the lower 90 and lows in the mid and upper 70s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We're tracking a tropical wave in the central Atlantic continuing to show high probability of development. The National Hurricane Center has placed the potential for development at 70% in the next couple of days and through the next 5 days.

There's a good possibility that it develops into a tropical depression or perhaps even a tropical storm over the next couple days.

The track through the end of the week will be west and northwest, taking this feature toward the Windward Islands by the weekend.

Most forecast models still suggest this storm will eventually curve to the north by next week, which would keep the storm away from the U.S. mainland. Return to index of stories...

HE SAYS WHAT MAKES LIGHTNING SO DANGEROUS? IT'S UNPREDICTABLE.

SOT JEFF HILDRETH/BONNEVILLE POWER ADMINISTRATION

EXPERT: The lightning wants to get from the cloud down to the ground. And it's going to take the shortest path possible. But it's unpredictable. So it might want to go over here and then down, or it might want to go over here and then down. It might take a zig zag pattern, it's unpredictable. JEFF: That's what makes it so scary. AMONG THE MANY DECISIONS ELYSE PICKETT FACED AS A MOM-TO-BE, ONE STOOD OUT. IT WAS A NO-BRAINER.

ELYSE PICKETT/FIRST-TIME MOM

RUNS:

:37 Absolutely. I, I knew I wanted to breastfeed the moment I found out I was pregnant.

IT'S A DECISION MANY MORE MOMS ARE MAKING. CHOOSING BREAST OVER BOTTLE FOR THEIR BABY. EXPERTS SEE IT AS A HUGE BOOST.

DR. CHRISTY CAVANAGH/FAMILY MEDICINE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

:42: Oh definitely breast-feeding has known benefits for mom and baby. We know it helped protect against infections for the baby, it may even help with brain development and IQ. We know that breast fed babies are less likely to be obese or overweight later in life.

EVEN WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS NEW MOMS MAY FACE STUMBLING BLOCKS- MANY TIMES THE NATURAL APPROACH ISN'T SECOND NATURE. AND THEN THERE'S 'THAT'.' THE SOCIAL ASPECT OF PUTTING BABY TO BREAST- IN PUBLIC.

ELYSE PICKETT/FIRST-TIME MOM

RUNS:

3:00 There is a little bit of a stigma with breastfeeding, especially in public. It is a bit of a challenge because she needs to eat every couple of hours But it's something that I definitely am willing to do.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

To show support for breastfeeding, several local hospitals are taking part in a public display. Called the Big Latch On, moms around the globe will simultaneously breast feed for at least one minute. The event is meant to support nursing moms.

CAROL LAWRENCE/PhD CLINICAL COORDINATOR

RUNS:

3:53 There really is a national movement on getting more women to breastfeed. The Surgeon General of the United States has issued a call for breastfeeding. Really putting the call out to communities and healthcare professionals on how they can support the breastfeeding mom.

UNLOCKED PHONES-PLASMA

LOOKING TO UPGRADE YOUR PHONE. BUT DON'T WANT TO GET STUCK WITH THAT LONG-TERM CONTRACT?

HELP LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE COMING FROM WASHINGTON.

JOSH LIPTON GIVES US A LOOK AT A PROPOSED LAW THAT COULD UNLOCK YOUR PHONE. Return to index of stories...

UNLOCKED PHONES-PKG

YOUR PHONE IS FREE AGAIN.

THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSING A BILL ON FRIDAY THAT LETS CONSUMERS UNLOCK THEIR MOBILE DEVICES IN ORDER TO USE THEM ON COMPETITORS' WIRELESS NETWORKS.

THE PRESIDENT SAYS HE LOOKS FORWARD TO SIGNING THE BILL - WHICH HAS ALREADY CLEARED THE SENATE - AND REVERSES A 2012 DECISION BY THE U-S COPYRIGHT OFFICE.

SO WHY DOES IT MATTER?

BECAUSE RIGHT NOW MOST MOBILE PHONES IN THE U-S ARE TIED TO A PARTICULAR NETWORK - SOLD BY CARRIERS AT BIG DISCOUNTS WHEN CONSUMERS SIGN LONG-TERM PHONE CONTRACTS.

So, WHEN THOSE CONTRACTS EXPIRE - CUSTOMERS WANTING TO KEEP THEIR PHONES BUT CHANGE NETWORKS FIRST HAVE TO GET PERMISSION FROM THEIR CARRIER - OR FACE LEGAL RAMIFICATIONS. THE NEW BILL ELIMINATES THAT.

Also, UNLOCKING PHONES GIVES THEM A SECOND LIFE. MAKING THEM CHEAPER OPTIONS FOR CUSTOMERS WHO CAN'T AFFORD NEW PHONES WITH EXPENSIVE WIRELESS PLANS - AND POTENTIALLY KEEPS PHONES FROM ENDING UP IN LANDFILLS.

IN DECEMBER - THE F-C-C ANNOUNCED A VOLUNTARY AGREEMENT WITH THE MAJOR WIRELESS CARRIERS THAT MADE IT EASIER FOR CONSUMERS TO FREE UP THEIR PHONES - BUT CONSUMER RIGHTS GROUPS SAY THE CURRENT BILL TAKES IT A STEP FURTHER. Return to index of stories...

KIDS BAN-PKG

NO STROLLERS, NO HIGH CHAIRS, NO BOOSTER CHAIRS. AND CHILDREN MAKING NOISE IN THE DINING ROOM, NOT ALLOWED. TO MANY, IT'S NOT EXACTLY A "WELCOME SIGN."

"I think it's not fair because I think little kids deserve to go in there."

"I think it's ridiculous, I think kids need to know how to behave in restaurants and if you don't take them to them, they don't know how to behave and they shouldn't be kept hidden away, so I think it's ridiculous, kids should be allowed in restaurants"

FISHERMAN'S WHARF IS ONE OF THE MONTEREY PENINSULA'S BIGGEST TOURIST ATTRACTIONS. AND THE SIGN AT OLD FISHERMAN'S GROTTO, SOME SAY, SENDS THE WRONG MESSAGE.

"I would probably not go there to not deal with that sort of atmosphere and it surprises me because this is a family place where you go with your kids for vacation."

S/ Jennifer Turner / Tourist:50-:53

"I wouldn't go in because it just doesn't seem like it would be friendly."

"But the whole crying baby thing I was kind of offended"

WE TALKED TO THE OWNER OF OLD FISHERMAN'S GROTTO. HE SAYS, HE DOESN'T CARE IF SOME PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT. EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE.

"If a place has the rules, that's what the rules are, you go in and abide by the rules or you find a place more suitable to your dining."

NIKI RIVIERE IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. SHE SAYS SHE COULDN'T GET A HIGH CHAIR FOR HER SIX-MONTH OLD.

S/ Niki Riviere / Tourist 1:19-1:34

"I'm completely shocked because I never had that happen, usually they cater, at least have a high chair for the child but it seemed like they didn't want any child, they said the child can't make any noises in there, so they turned us away."

AND CHRIS SHAKE IS OKAY WITHOUT HER BUSINESS. AND IF YOU'RE WONDERING, HE SAYS THE RULES DON'T AFFECT HIS BOTTOM LINE.

"Well let's put it this way, I haven't had a down year for over 20 years, our business continues to grow." Return to index of stories...
