ARMSTRONG OPTING KIDS OUT OF TESTS-PKG

DON ARMSTRONG IS SPEAKING FIRST AS A PARENT-

BUT ALSO AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.

Don Armstrong

Board Member, Lee County Schools

31:20-31:28

This is my kids education. I have 86 other thousand kids out here as well. It's their education.

HIS SON AND DAUGHTER ARE FRATERNAL TWINS IN FOURTH GRADE AT NORTH FORT MYERS ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS.

ALREADY HE SAYS THE STRESS OF STANDARDIZED TESTS-IS TOO MUCH.

Don Armstrong

Board Member, Lee County Schools

But this one test is going to tell me where my kids are at? I don't think so.

NOW HE WANTS TO OPT HIS CHILDREN OUT OF STANDARDIZED TESTS- AND TAKE A STANCE AGAINST THEM.

Don Armstrong

Board Member, Lee County Schools

28:59-29:05

We're telling these kids what to think. We're not letting them do their own thinking.

ACCORDING TO FLORIDA LAW-STUDENTS CAN OPT OUT OF STANDARDIZED TESTING.

IN ORDER TO DO THAT-THE SCHOOL WILL LOOK AT A PORTFOLIO OF THE STUDENTS WORK AND CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS TO DETERMINE IF THE STUDENT CAN MOVE TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL.

ARMSTRONG PLANS TO TAKE PAPERWORK TO THE PRINCIPAL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

Don Armstrong

Board Member, Lee County Schools

27:52-28:00

I'm in full right as a parent that I will be opting my kids out.

A GROUP OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS SPOKE AGAINST STANDARDIZED TESTS EARLIER THIS YEAR-CALLING ON LAWMAKERS TO FOCUS *LESS ON STANDARDIZED TESTING-- AND MORE ON MULTIPLE FORMS OF ASSESSMENT.

ERIN SLIVA TEACHERS THIRD GRADE AT TANGLEWOOD ELEMENTARY.

Erin Sliva

Teacher, Tanglewood Elementary

40:25-40:33

As a teacher I can see the weight that it puts on the kids shoulders. Just how stressful it can be for them.

NOW ARMSTRONG IS HOPING OTHERS WILL JOIN WITH HIM-TO TAKE THEIR FIGHT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

Don Armstrong

Board Member, Lee County Schools

31:49-31:57

HEALTH EXPERTS AROUND THE WORLD WORRY THE VIRUS WILL BE TOUGH TO CONTAIN.

AND NOW, ONE AMERICAN HAS DIED. Return to index of stories...

HE WAS PLANNING TO TRAVEL TO MINNESOTA TO CELEBRATE HIS DAUGHTERS' BIRTHDAYS NEXT MONTH.

"I had to tell her that her daddy is in Heaven now, and she said, "Well I thought he was in Liberia."

SAWYER'S WIFE, DECONTEE, SAYS HER HUSBAND WAS VISITING HIS SISTER, IN LIBERIA, WHO WAS ILL.

SHE SAYS HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS AWAITING HIM.

"They didn't know it was Ebola. So they thought she may have malaria, so he was helping. Had he known, he would have definitely taken better precautions."

THE VIRUS IS SPREAD THROUGH CONTACT WITH A SICK PERSON'S BODILY FLUIDS.

AS FOR THE THREAT OF AN OUTBREAK IN THE U.S. OFFICIALS REMAIN CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC.

"In the United States, you have much better resources, you'd be able to isolate someone, provide whatever supportive theropy in terms of fluids, things like that to the person. So they'd have a much better chance A of surviving, and B not turning into an outbreak."

THE CDC HAS ISSUED AN ALERT TO U.S. HEALTH WORKERS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ANY PATIENTS WHO HAVE RECENTLY TRAVELED TO WEST AFRICA.

BUT, WHAT MAKES IT HARD IS THAT IT TAKES TWO TO 21 DAYS FOR A INFECTED PERSON TO SHOW SYMPTOMS. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CHANGES AHEAD TO CLOSE THE WORK WEEK

The onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico continued Wednesday, with the the bulk of the activity in inland areas. Scattered showers and storms will likely continue this evening in inland areas, with temps in the 80s. We'll see the activity die down overnight, with lows in the mid to upper 70s.

We have more onshore flow on Thursday, which will again bring scattered activity in coastal areas in the morning hours. More activity will be possible this afternoon, with the best chance for activity in areas east of I-75. Highs on Thursday will be in the low 90s.

Changes will arrive on Friday. Winds will shift to the southeast and east to close the work week, ending the coastal threat for AM rain. The winds will also provide a better chance for PM storms in the Urban Corridor, with highs in the low 90s.

More moisture will enter the area for the weekend, increasing the threat for scattered activity. The best chance for rain will be in the PM hours both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low 90s.

The moisture remains in place on Monday, before slightly drier air is expected to roll in by Tuesday. Temps next week look to remain in the low 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping a very close eye on a disturbance sitting in the Atlantic between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa. The system is much weaker than Tuesday, and the National Hurricane Center has reduced the chance for development to 50%.

The disturbance is still expected to move west and eventually curving northwestward. Right now, it does not look like it will be impacting Florida.

Elsewhere, weak tropical waves are developing in the Atlantic but no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
