"You feel mosquitoes buddy? No? Maybe its working."

AT FIVE YEARS OLD, KINGSTON GARTHUS' IMAGINATION CAN RUN WILD.

BUT WHEN A CHILD'S MIND MEETS ADULT ISSUES.

"Well, he has PTSD and then a mild form of depression"

REALITY IS ANYTHING BUT CHILD'S PLAY.

"It's really sad a five-year-old has PTSD because of domestic violence."

KRISTIN GARTHUS IS KINGSTON'S MOM. IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP FOR SEVERAL YEARS, SHE FOUND FIVE-YEAR-OLD KINGSTON WASN'T IMMUNE TO GROWN-UP PROBLEMS.

"My daddy was naughty. He been naughty to us."

"Yep. And so we came here so you could see Dr. Carver."

"Yep. And daddy used to been, used to been really bad so we never wanted him to come back."

"Nope. We want to be safe. Keep you and your big brothers safe."

"Yeah, we want to keep 'em, we want to keep 'em safe."

DR. ELIZABETH CARVER HAS BEEN SEEING KINGSTON FOR THE PAST MONTH AND SAYS THE OUTBURSTS, OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH NAUGHTY BEHAVIOR, ARE SIGNS OF TRAUMATIC STRESS.

"He's actually a highly anxious child, who has got some residual depression and he's still struggling with past trauma. So, he is going to be more sensitive to other children. He is going to be a bit more angry and disregulated than other children, because he lived in an angry and disregulated environment."

CARVER SAYS THE SOONER A CHILD'S BEHAVIOR IS DIAGNOSED AND TREATED, THE BETTER.

IT GETS MORE CHALLENGING TO DO SO AS YOU GET OLDER, THOSE BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS GET MORE AND MORE INGRAINED AS WE GET OLDER.

"We can see a lot of, a lot of different impairments from kids who have unresolved issues related to trauma.

SAPRINA MATHENY IS THE DIRECTOR OF CHILD TRAUMA SERVICES AT THE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CENTER AND SAYS UNRESOLVED TRAUMA CAN HAVE LONG-LASTING EFFECTS.

"We can see impacts in emotional regulation. So the ability to know what you feel and then the ability to express what you feel and to cope with what you feel in healthy ways."

MEANWHILE, GARTHUS IS GLAD SHE GOT HELP. SO KINGSTON'S IMAGINATION CAN FOCUS ON FIVE YEAR OLD THINGS.

AND LEAVE ADULT PROBLEMS TO THE ADULTS.

EBOLA DOCTOR WITNESS-PKG

DOCTOR JOSH MUGELE SEES TRAUMA AND ILLNESS AT IU METHODIST ER. HE'S TRAINED FOR DISASTERS LIKE HURRICANE KATRINA AND 9/11. MEDICAL CARE IN THE RUBBLE. BUT A TRIP TO LIBERIA LAST MONTH EXPOSED HIM TO A NEW CRISIS.

"It's dangerous. And It's scary,"

HE'S JUST BACK FROM JFK HOSPITAL IN LIBERIA SEEING A SPIKE IN EBOLA CASES. HE WAS THERE FOR RESEARCH, THEN,

"When we saw the first ebola hit a Monrovia patient came to another hospital and we actually got the first patient at JFK. This wasn't at all part of our plan."

A REAL CRISIS. DR. MUGELE WASN'T GIVING HANDS-ON CARE BUT USED HIS TRAINING TO HELP STOP THE SPREAD.

"Help limit access to the hospital and start screening patients as they were coming in, so if people were exhibiting signs of Ebola we could get them to the place where they could be isolated and get treatment."

ISOLATION IS CRITICAL. THAT INCLUDES PROTECTIVE GEAR TO KEEP HEALTH WORKERS FROM CONTACTING THE VICTIM'S BODILY FLUIDS. BUT.

"There's just a huge shortage of basic things like soap and gloves,"

DR. MUGELE DID NOT MEET IU TRAINED DOCTOR KENT BRANTLY, FIGHTING TO RECOVER FROM EBOLA IN LIBERIA. HE DID KNOW DR. SAMUEL BRISBANE THERE.

"I learned after I came back he contracted Ebola and died this weekend. He was a very close friend to us. It's hitting us on a personal level and it's hitting us very hard."

IN ALL THE CASES HE SAW LAST MONTH, ALL THE PATIENT'S DIED. A SCARE THIS WEEK WHEN A NORTH CAROLINA HOSPITAL LOCKED DOWN FOR A POSSIBLE EBOLA PATIENT. IT WAS NOT EBOLA. THE DOCTOR SAYS THE U.S. CAN DEAL WITH THE THREAT. WE HAVE MORE PROTECTIVE GEAR, TRAINING, CLEANING SUPPLIES.

S/ David MacAnally / Reporting1:41-1:49

"So what is it with doctors that drives medical professionals, like firefighters, to run toward the flames and not away from it?"

"It weighs on your conscience. It's hard not to be able to do something about it if you have the ability, if you have the resources." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A FEW DOWNPOURS TODAY

Onshore winds will again bring scattered activity in coastal areas this morning. More activity will be possible this afternoon, with the best chance for activity in areas east of I-75. Highs today will be in the low 90s.

Changes to the weather pattern begin on Friday. Winds will shift to the southeast and east to close the work week, ending the coastal threat for AM rain. The winds will also provide a better chance for PM storms in the Urban Corridor, with highs in the low 90s. It will be more like what you probably expect in early August.

More moisture will enter the area for the weekend, increasing the threat for scattered activity. The best chance for rain will be in the PM hours both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low 90s.

The moisture remains in place on Monday, before slightly drier air is expected to roll in by Tuesday. Temperatures will stay low 90s into next week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping a very close eye on a disturbance sitting in the Atlantic between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa. After taking a little bit of a break yesterday, this area has shown a bit of strengthening through the night. The National Hurricane Center is now putting the risk of development in the next couple of days at 60%; the same for the the next 5 days, too.

The disturbance is still expected to move west and eventually curving northwestward. Right now, it does not look like it will be impacting Florida.

Elsewhere, weak tropical waves are developing in the Atlantic but no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
