FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING MORE STORM CHANCES

The onshore flow continued on Thursday, with scattered downpours and storms developing in coastal areas and then moving inland. This activity may try to push back into the Urban Corridor this evening as temps fall into the 80s. The rain and storms will slowly end overnight, with lows in the mid to upper 70s.

Storm chances will continue into Friday, but with some changes. Winds will shift to the south and east, ending the morning rainfall threat. However, scattered PM showers and storms will likely be a good bet in the Urban Corridor, with activity diminishing in the evening. Highs on Friday will be in the low 90s.

More moisture works into the area for the weekend, increasing the rain and storm chances. The activity still looks to be scattered, but coverage will likely be greater than during the work week. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 90s.

The extra moisture looks to linger into early next week, keeping PM storm chances elevated. As we move into Tuesday and Wednesday, some slightly drier air will arrive, reducing the coverage of the PM activity.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping a close eye on a tropical system east of the Lesser Antilles. This system looks stronger than Wednesday and the National Hurricane Center said it is nearing tropical depression status.

The hurricane center has given this system a 70% chance of development, but it could become a Tropical Depression later tonight.

All the forecast guidance has this system still impacting the Lesser and Greater Antilles, before moving northwest toward the Bahamas. It does not look like this system will impact Florida.

Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELLS-PLASMA CG

· Today's market action certainly wasn't pretty but I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about either. We've had so few of these negative days in the past year that when we do have a triple digit decline in the Dow, it really gets your attention. But the reality is, if we saw another six or seven more of these days, it would be the makings of a normal, healthy correction in stocks that we haven't seen in almost three years.

· Now, you've probably heard a lot of rumblings in the news about markets being supported by low interest rates and how the Federal Reserve has pushed stocks into a bubble. Yes, while it's true that low interest rates have given a lift to stocks, that's typically one of the goals of the Federal Reserve during recessionary periods like we experienced between 2008 and 2010.

· But I believe it would be difficult to characterize US stock markets as being in a bubble right now. And here's why. Currently the S&P 500 is trading at 16.7 times our earnings estimate for this year.

When we compare this number to historical figures looking back to 1986, the median price-to-earnings ratio is actually the same, at 16.7 times reported operating earnings. So despite the huge run-up in stocks that we've seen since the market lows of 2009, we believe that the stock market is fairly valued right now and that current levels do not reflect a bubble. In fact, based on our outlook and current projections for earnings this year and next, we believe this bull market has some more room to run.

· Now, what's likely moving markets lower today are two different topics. The first of these is the continuing geopolitical unrest between Ukraine and Russia and the EU sanctions imposed against Russia. The reason why this has an impact on US stocks is that the bottom line or profitability of many US-based multi-national companies that have sales in Europe may be negatively impacted by these sanctions. The second issue that markets are digesting right now is the possibility that the Federal Reserve may increase interest rates sooner that originally forecasted based on recent economic reports released showing marked improvement in both the growth of the US economy as well as the health of the US labor market. And while improved economic conditions is certainly good news and intuitively should push the stock market higher, the prospects of higher interest rates have investors thinking twice about how they are going to allocate funds in their portfolios.

· Regardless of what's happening in the markets today, we believe that markets are fairly valued and have more room to run to the upside. It would not be unusual or even that worrisome if markets did correct to the tune of eight to ten percent at these levels. But as always, make sure you review your investments now so you understand what impact a correction would have on your investment portfolio. Return to index of stories...

IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS IMMIGRATION CRISIS STORY, YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD MANY PEOPLE USE THE EXPRESSION "WE NEED TO SECURE OUR BORDER."

"We've gotta secure our border. We need to get serious about stopping illegal immigration."

BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, HOW DO YOU DEFINE THAT?

OVER THE YEARS I'VE REPORTED ON MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE WORKED IN SECURING THAT SOUTHERN BORDER AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THE IDEA OF COMPLETELY SEALING OFF THE BORDER, THE IDEA THAT NO ONE COULD EVER MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH IS FAR-FETCHED.

TAKE FOR EXAMPLE, THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE UNITED STATES RUNS ABOUT 2,000 MILES FROM BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS TO SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.

MUCH OF IS IT REMOTE AND RUGGED AND IN MANY PLACES IT'S SIMPLY A LINE IN THE SAND.

AND HERE'S ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT IT, IF YOU WERE TO TAKE ONE BORDER PATROL AGENT AND STAGGER THEN EVERY TEN FEET, FROM BROWNSVILLE TO SAN DIEGO, YOU WOULD NEED 1.1 MILLION BORDER PATROL AGENTS TO COMPLETELY WORK ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER.

AND IF YOU HAD THEM WORKING TWO 12-HOUR SHIFTS, YOU WOULD NEED 2.2 MILLION BORDER PATROL AGENTS.

RIGHT NOW, THE UNITED STATES ONLY HAS 21,000 BORDER PATROL AGENTS AND THAT'S THE MOST THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER HAD. SO THIS IDEA IS CRAZY, FAR-FETCHED, THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT THESE NUMBERS AND READ THESE REPORTS, YOU'RE REALLY KIND OF LEFT THINKING, DO WE REALLY KNOW HOW TO DEFINE HOW TO SECURE THE BORDER? DO THESE NUMBERS PAINT THE BEST PICTURE POSSIBLE? Return to index of stories...

18:46 The recommendations are to be consuming less than 2,300 mg a day for most people. And people who have vascular disease, kidney disease they want you on under 1,500 mg. So you are going to go over that level pretty quickly if you eat out.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Most of our sodium isn't coming from the salt shaker-it's hidden inside processed foods and restaurant meals. Some of the saltiest foods: pizza, hamburgers, cured meats, soups and bread.
