BERTHA SETUP-ST-TBX

AN ACTIVE WEATHER RADAR STARTS US OFF TONIGHT AT 11.

NBC2'S SENIOR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST ROBERT VAN WINKLE IS TRACKING TONIGHTS RAIN.

AND THE SECOND NAMED STORM OF THE YEAR-

TROPICAL STORM BERTHA.

ROBERT? Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

We're still keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bertha. Bertha is still a healthy tropical storm, with sustained winds of 50 mph.

The system will roll across the Lesser Antilles tonight and then take aim at Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic over the weekend.

All the forecast guidance is still indicating that Bertha will swing northwestward toward the Bahamas and away from Florida early next week.

Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

BORDER BILL-TRX-TCMON

NBC2 WITH BREAKING NEWS. CONCERNING THE IMMIGRATION CRISIS ON THE BORDER.

THE U-S HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES JUST PASSED AN ALMOST 700 MILLION DOLLAR BILL. TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF YOUNG MIGRANT CHILDREN ILLEGALLY CROSSING INTO THE U-S.

THE BILL WOULD INCREASE SPENDING FOR THE NATIONAL GUARD AT THE BORDER. AND MAKE CHANGES SO KIDS COULD BE SENT HOME MORE QUICKLY.

THE BILL PASSED ON A MOSTLY PARTY LINE VOTE.

DEMOCRATS CALLING IT A SHAM. SINCE THE SENATE IS ALREADY OUT OF SESSION.

A FLORIDA JUDGE SAYS REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS HAVE TO REDRAW THE STATE'S CONGRESSIONAL MAPS.

CONGRESSIONAL REMAPPING-BNR-PKG

House Rep. heather Fitzenhagen 10

Candidate Matthew Miller/District 79

- 1:06

TRT 1:36

05:35-42

I'm a very big optimist so I believe we can get it done if that's what we need to do.

TWO WEEKS TO DO ONE BIG JOB.

REPUBLICAN HEATHER FITZENHAGEN SAYS TIME IS THE KEY CROSSING THAT FINISH LINE.

05:42-48

I wish we did have more time and it were something we were able to do after the November elections

CIRCUIT JUDGE TERRY LEWIS ORDERED LEGISLATION TO REDRAW CONGRESSIONAL MAPS NO LATER THAN AUGUST 15TH.

FOR FITZENHAGEN THAT COULD CAUSE TWO MAJOR HICCUPS.

ONE -- IF REDISTRICTING TAKES LONGER IT MIGHT CHANGE THE DATE OF THE CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION.

4:07-19

Which just throws a monkey wrench into things and if you have a special election EVERYTIME you do that you change the date and have one singular to a particular race it cost the tax payers more money

FITZENHAGEN IS NEARLY 100 PERCENT POSITIVE IT WILL TAKE LONGER THAN TWO WEEKS.

WHICH SOME BELIEVE GIVES THEM AN ADVANTAGE IN THE ELECTION.

4:39-46

We are unable to campaign to raise money or do anything during that time we are serving in the legislature

CANDIDATE -- MATTHEW MILLER FOR DISTRICT 79 -- SAYS HE'LL TAKE THE ADVANTAGE BUT DOESN'T THINK REMAPPING IS NECESSARY.

9:29-35

A lot of time a lot of government getting involved and changing things that don't need to be changed

GEOGRAPHICALLY -- ITS NOT CLEAR HOW MUCH OF A CHANGE THERE WILL BE.

08:49-09:00

Kind of a political game when you redistricting in my opinion so ya know if it goes 5-10 miles one way or the other ya know I don't think it makes that big of a difference

BUT FOR THOSE IN THE HOUSE, LIKE REPRESENTATIVE FITZENHAGEN -- SHE SAYS IT'S ONLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE FAIR.

06:09-20

Make sure that every constituent in FLORIDA feels that they are being fairly represented and that the districts are being drawn fairly to benefit every citizen Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

INCREASING RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

Scattered showers and storms again developed in parts of the area Friday, with more activity possible in the evening hours. Temps this evening will fall into the 80s. The activity should again dissipate overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

More moisture works into the region from the east Saturday, resulting in better rain and storm chances. Much of the morning time frame looks OK, but by afternoon scattered showers and storms will be developing. The coverage of this activity will likely be greater than the past few days. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

Even more moisture moves in on Sunday, with PM rain and storms now looking likely. The best chance for activity will be in the afternoon and early evening hours. Highs on Sunday will be in the low 90s.

The increased moisture lingers into Monday as well, with scattered PM showers and storms again developing.

Drier air does work in by midweek, bringing rain and storm chances to more seasonal levels, with highs holding in the low 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We're still keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bertha. Bertha is still a healthy tropical storm, with sustained winds of 50 mph.

The system will roll across the Lesser Antilles tonight and then take aim at Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic over the weekend.

All the forecast guidance is still indicating that Bertha will swing northwestward toward the Bahamas and away from Florida early next week.
