A few showers over the Gulf of Mexico may continue to scrape our coastal areas this morning, as the opportunity for rainfall comes ashore this afternoon.

With the progression of the seabreeze from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll stand the chance for some showers or storms this afternoon. After lunchtime, the greatest area of opportunity for rain and thunder will be along and east of the I-75 corridor.

SUICIDE GENE-CLIP TCMON

NOW TO SOME GROUNDBREAKING NEW RESEARCH THAT'S UNCOVERED A GENETIC INDICATOR IN PEOPLE. MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.

NBC'S NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT PETER ALEXANDER IS AT JOHNS HOPKINS MEDICAL CENTER IN BALTIMORE. Return to index of stories...

SUICIDE GENE-PKG

Scientists say the danger may already be inside a person's body.

Researchers in this Johns Hopkins lab pinpointed problematic chemicals that affect the gene S-K-A-2. That gene controls how the brain reacts to stress hormones that stop negative thoughts and impulsive behavior within us. Abnormal levels of that hormone, Cortisol, are found in the brains of suicide victims.

SOT Zachary Kaminsky/The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine:25 -:29

"We may be able to identify people at risk and attempt to intervene to save lives."

Johns Hopkins professor Zachary Kaminsky -- whose work appeared in the American Journal of Psychiatry -- tested more than three-hundred people for variations to that one gene and said it predicted -- with eighty-percent accuracy -- who had history of suicidal attempts or thoughts.

SOT Zachary Kaminsky

"We like to think of it a bit like a faulty brake pad. /EDIT/ Once we're stressed, once we start driving that car, that's when we're going to realize we're in trouble."

Each year, about thirty-eight-thousand Americans take their own life. That's more than are murdered. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for those fifteen to twenty-four and the second-leading cause of death among adults twenty-five to thirty-four.

And while the genetic link is promising, critics caution it's not always that simple.

SOT Jill Harkavy-Friedman/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention 1:14 - 1:19

"Genetics is not destiny. /EDIT/ We know there are probably many genes involved and many other factors -- biological, psychological, social and environmental -- that all contribute together to suicide."

Scientists concede more studies are needed, but they're hopeful that someday there may be an F-D-A-approved blood test for this genetic indicator.

SOT Zachary Kaminsky

"This gene represents potentially a new player and points out that looking at gene regulation as a way to try predict people's disease ahead of time holds a lot of promise."

LIVE:

Bottom line, it's unclear how long it will be before there may be a test you can get at your doctor's office, and researchers stress that any genetic indicator is only one part of suicide prevention. People in need should also rely on crisis hotlines and crisis counseling. Return to index of stories...

We're starting off our list this week with a man accused of trying to rape a four

year old girl, while her mother was just a few rooms away. According to reports,

the victim was in the bathroom, when Daniel Andres followed her in, threw her

down on the floor and removed all of her clothing. Andres attempted to rape

the young girl, however was unsuccessful. As the victim was being attacked,

she screamed - prompting her mom to run to the bathroom, where she saw

Andres running out of the room with the little girls shirt, skirt and underpants in

hand. Deputies immediately arrested Andres on scene, and he spent just over

a year in jail for the crime, but was eventually released. Now, he's on the run for

violating terms of his sex offender probation. Last known to be living in central

Fort Myers, Andres will be held without bond upon his arrest.

Next up is Coty Harrison, a repeat offender who racked up his first felony arrest

on his 15th

grand theft and burglary, as well as grand theft auto when he was just 16. As an

adult, he's compiled seven additional arrests in Lee County for more burglaries

thefts and probation violations, as well as three in Charlotte County. Now at age

23, he's wanted for failing to show up in court after his last arrest for grand theft.

Harrison was last known to be living in the Suncoast area of North Fort Myers,

and has numerous tattoos, including a cross on both his back and his left hand,

and the name Lindsey on his left arm. Upon his arrest, Harrison will be held

without bond in the Lee County Jail.

Also dodging the long arm of the law is Osman Mendez, who faces two

felony warrants, for violating his probation on charges of lewd and lascivious

conduct and failure to register as a sexual offender. This 32 year old felon was

convicted in 2007 after an incident in a South Fort Myers neighborhood where

he approached a young teenage girl, and started making unwanted advances.

When she resisted, he became physically aggressive with her, but fortunately

the teen was able to break free and ran to a friends house to call police. Mendez

was soon after arrested and spent just over two months in jail for his crime. Now

a registered sexual offender, Mendez was court ordered to keep in touch with law

enforcement so they could keep track of him, but instead, he's gone into hiding.

Detectives say Mendez is a high risk sexual offender who has connections to the

Bonita Springs and Fort Myers area.

And rounding out our list is Nelson Sanderson, one of the top 10 fugitives on

Crime Stoppers Most Wanted list. This 73 year old fugitive has been on the run

for far too long, on the heels of a warrant for two counts of the lewd or lascivious

molestation of a child under the age of 12. According to the arrest warrant,

Sanderson is accused of performing extremely repulsive acts on a child on one

or more occasions between July 2010 and July 2012. The victim was a young

girl to whom Sanderson was an authority figure, however his accused actions

terminated that level of trust. Sanderson was last known to be living in North

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Tracking rain chances and weekend forecast details

A few showers over the Gulf of Mexico may continue to scrape our coastal areas this morning, as the opportunity for rainfall comes ashore this afternoon.

With the progression of the seabreeze from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll stand the chance for some showers or storms this afternoon. After lunchtime, the greatest area of opportunity for rain and thunder will be along and east of the I-75 corridor.

This evening it's a possibility some storms may try to build back closer toward the US41 corridor and coastal regions.

Temperatures today are expected to top out at 92 degrees.

For the upcoming weekend, we will stand a good chance for seabreeze-induced showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and early evening timeframes. Temps on both days should max out in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 110 miles east-northeast of Barbados. The storm has max sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving to the west-northwest at 20 mph.

This storm is not expected to have a direct impact on our weather. The official forecast cone places Bertha moving toward the northern side of the island of Hispanola, then on the eastern Bahamas, before curling northward into the Atlantic.

Stay with NBC2 for updates on Bertha's progression throughout the weekend. Return to index of stories...

SUGARY DRINK TAX-TRX OC

ONE LAWMAKER IS CALLING OUT PEOPLE WITH A SWEET TOOTH.

BUT SOME FIND THE TAX MORE SOUR, THAN SWEET.

NBC'S DOUG GREENE HAS MORE. Return to index of stories...

SUGARY DRINK TAX-PKG

THE IDEA IS THAT FOR EACH TEASPOON OF SUGAR IN A DRINK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WOULD TAKE A PENNY.

Ohmigod! Fifty grams. fifty grams?

FIFTY GRAMS AT ABOUT FOUR GRAMS A TEASPOON WOULD BE A TWELVE AND A HALF CENT TAX. THE CONTENT'S ON THE LABEL OF ALL KINDS OF SUGARY DRINKS, NOT JUST SODA.

"I don't drink a lot of soda to begin with but it would definitely make me drink less, for sure. That's another thing to think about before you actually have a soda. You want to pay extra for more sugar? Probably not."

THIS CLINICAL NUTRITIONIST AT CONNECTICUT CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER THINKS INDUSTRY WILL BEAT BACK THE PROPOSED TAX BUT BECAUSE SHE KNOWS WHAT SUGAR CAN DO SHE AGREES WITH THE IDEA.

"We really have an increasing incidence of obesity and all of the elements that results from increasing obesity such as type two diabetes."

"This family's enjoying frozen yogurt, partly because it has less sugar than ice cream. What does Grandma think of a tax on sugary drinks?"

"I just don't think that's fair. You shouldn't do that. Pretty soon, they'll be charging to put flour into stuff."

STILL THEY KNOW SUGAR CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS.

Too much sugar and too many cavities. SO YOU DON'T DRINK IT? No.

AND NOT DRINKING IT, AFTER ALL, IS WHAT SUPPORTERS OF THE TAX ON SUGARY DRINKS REALLY WANT. DOUG GREENE, NBC CONNECTICUT NEWS. Return to index of stories...

MELTING DASHBOARDS-PKG

WHEN THE SUN POPS OUT KAY SAMSON POPS OPEN HER SUN SHADE.

"I love this car."

AND WANTS IT TO LAST FOR YEARS.

"Why did you spend extra money to tint your car?"

"Because I wanted to keep it nice."

YET THE DASHBOARD OF THIS SPORTY CAR HAS SOFT, STICKY SPOTS.

"I've lived in south Florida for 26 years. I've never, never, ever seen a melting car."

ANNE BOURGEOIS HASN'T EITHER.

"It's very sticky so it looks unsightly and it's difficult to clean."

WHEN THE SUN HITS THE STICKY SURFACE A SHINY SAFETY ISSUE STARES BACK AT DRIVERS.

"There's the glare. And that comes up. You can't really see where you're going properly. It's quite dangerous I think."

ANNE COMPLAINED ON NISSAN'S FACEBOOK PAGE WHERE THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMMENTS.

"In order for me to drive I have to lean down a little bit an go right between the 2 glare spots. "

KAY REPORTED THE DANGER TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, BUT SHE'S ONE OF ONLY 12 NISSAN DRIVERS TO COMPLAIN.

"So what's causing this sticky and shiny situation? According to a Nissan service manager, the sun is shining on this dashboard and that's causing a chemical reaction with the glue underneath. But the manufacturer says the problem is so limited they don't know what's causing the melting. Our investigation found it's not just a Nissan problem. The consumer watchdog also heard from a Toyota driver and her dashboard is just as sticky. Lexus and Mazda owners are also complaining to the government."

"If I can't see, of course I could have an accident."

NISSAN WON'T PAY FOR A NEW DASHBOARD FOR THESE DRIVERS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR MAKER HAS FOR OTHERS.

"I feel like they should stand by their product. If they use something that's not right on this dashboard and it's melting, they need to fix that problem."

A REPLACEMENT DASHBOARD IS 15-HUNDRED DOLLARS. A BIG PRICE TAG DRIVERS DON'T WANT TO PAY. BUT THEIR SOLUTIONS LEAD TO AN EVEN BIGGER STICKY MESS. KAY'S SUN SHADES ARE FULL OF BLACK STICKY SPOTS, AND MORE ARE ADDED EVERY TIME SHE STICKS HER SUN SHADE IN THE WINDSHIELD.

"If anybody else has this problem they need to say something."
