HEALTH MATTERS-ONCAM

THERE'S A NEW LINE OF CANCER TREATMENT. AIMED AT PATIENTS WHO HAVE USED UP THEIR TOLERANCE TO RADIATION.

IT'S CALLED HYPER-THERMIA.

AND IT DELIVERS A HOT SHOT THAT INCREASES EFFECTIVENESS OF RADIATION AND CERTAIN CHEMOTHERAPIES.

AMY OSHIER HAS MORE IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS REPORT Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

IT IS ONE OF THE HARSHEST REALITIES OF CANCER. A PATIENT UNDERGOES TREATMENT AND THEN THE DISEASE COMES BACK. AND OPTIONS ARE DWINDLING. WHEN IT COMES TO RADIATION THERE MAY BE A SAFE WAY TO TAKE A SECOND SHOT.

DR. ALAN BROWN/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:06 Hyperthermia makes radiation more effective so we don't have to use higher doses we would otherwise have to use to result in the same kill- or tumor control.

HYPERTHERMIA, OR THERMOTHERAPY USES HEAT TO DAMAGE AND KILL CANCER CELLS. THE FDA HAS APPROVED ITS USE FOR PALLIATIVE CARE AND RECURRENCES.

DR. ALAN BROWN/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:26: So for instance a patient that has a breast cancer that have had previous mastectomy and radiation/chemotherapy and the cancer comes back, 1:42: And because of the previous radiation we're somewhat limited of the amount of radiation we can give again. So this would be a particular use in those patients because when the heat is applied to the chest wall what it does is make the radiation more effective.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Researchers have long known that heat kills cancer, the key is to effectively deliver and control the heat. New technologies are able to do both. When hyperthermia and radiation therapy are combined, they are usually given within an hour of each other.

DR. ALAN BROWN/RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:44 Ideally for this treatment to be successful we want the temperature to be maintained at about 108 degrees. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and it's usually done in conjunction with radiation so even though heat can kill cancer cells, when it's given in combination with radiation and even chemotherapy it's more effective.

HEAT IS DELIVERED BY PLACING A LIQUID-FILLED BLADDER AGAINST THE SKIN, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A CURATIVE TREATMENT, HYPERTHERMIA IS SUCCESSFULLY TURNING UP THE HEAT ON TUMORS. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Tracking rain chances and weekend forecast details

A few showers over the Gulf of Mexico may continue to scrape our coastal areas this morning, as the opportunity for rainfall comes ashore this afternoon.

With the progression of the seabreeze from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll stand the chance for some showers or storms this afternoon. After lunchtime, the greatest area of opportunity for rain and thunder will be along and east of the I-75 corridor.

This evening it's a possibility some storms may try to build back closer toward the US41 corridor and coastal regions.

Temperatures today are expected to top out at 92 degrees.

For the upcoming weekend, we will stand a good chance for seabreeze-induced showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and early evening timeframes. Temps on both days should max out in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 110 miles east-northeast of Barbados. The storm has max sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving to the west-northwest at 20 mph.

This storm is not expected to have a direct impact on our weather. The official forecast cone places Bertha moving toward the northern side of the island of Hispanola, then on the eastern Bahamas, before curling northward into the Atlantic.

Stay with NBC2 for updates on Bertha's progression throughout the weekend. Return to index of stories...

MELTING DASHBOARDS-VO IN PLASMA

WHILE YOU'RE INSIDE IN THE AIR CONDITIONING, DO YOU EVER WONDER WHAT YOUR CAR EXPERIENCES IN THE BLISTERING SUN OUTSIDE?

SOME CAR OWNERS, ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DASHBOARDS MELTING IN THE SUMMER SUN.

THEY BECOME STICKY AND REFLECT GLARE, CAUSING SAFETY CONCERNS.

JENN STRATHMAN EXPOSES THE PROBLEM. Return to index of stories...

MELTING DASHBOARDS-PKG

WHEN THE SUN POPS OUT KAY SAMSON POPS OPEN HER SUN SHADE.

"I love this car."

AND WANTS IT TO LAST FOR YEARS.

"Why did you spend extra money to tint your car?"

"Because I wanted to keep it nice."

YET THE DASHBOARD OF THIS SPORTY CAR HAS SOFT, STICKY SPOTS.

"I've lived in south Florida for 26 years. I've never, never, ever seen a melting car."

ANNE BOURGEOIS HASN'T EITHER.

"It's very sticky so it looks unsightly and it's difficult to clean."

WHEN THE SUN HITS THE STICKY SURFACE A SHINY SAFETY ISSUE STARES BACK AT DRIVERS.

"There's the glare. And that comes up. You can't really see where you're going properly. It's quite dangerous I think."

ANNE COMPLAINED ON NISSAN'S FACEBOOK PAGE WHERE THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMMENTS.

"In order for me to drive I have to lean down a little bit an go right between the 2 glare spots. "

KAY REPORTED THE DANGER TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, BUT SHE'S ONE OF ONLY 12 NISSAN DRIVERS TO COMPLAIN.

"So what's causing this sticky and shiny situation? According to a Nissan service manager, the sun is shining on this dashboard and that's causing a chemical reaction with the glue underneath. But the manufacturer says the problem is so limited they don't know what's causing the melting. Our investigation found it's not just a Nissan problem. The consumer watchdog also heard from a Toyota driver and her dashboard is just as sticky. Lexus and Mazda owners are also complaining to the government."

"If I can't see, of course I could have an accident."

NISSAN WON'T PAY FOR A NEW DASHBOARD FOR THESE DRIVERS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR MAKER HAS FOR OTHERS.

"I feel like they should stand by their product. If they use something that's not right on this dashboard and it's melting, they need to fix that problem."

A REPLACEMENT DASHBOARD IS 15-HUNDRED DOLLARS. A BIG PRICE TAG DRIVERS DON'T WANT TO PAY. BUT THEIR SOLUTIONS LEAD TO AN EVEN BIGGER STICKY MESS. KAY'S SUN SHADES ARE FULL OF BLACK STICKY SPOTS, AND MORE ARE ADDED EVERY TIME SHE STICKS HER SUN SHADE IN THE WINDSHIELD.

"If anybody else has this problem they need to say something." Return to index of stories...

SHE ENDED UP RIGHT HERE ALONG THE ARKANSAS RIVER BELOW HIGHWAY 62 -- HER CAR - STUCK IN THE MUD, AND HER ONLY WAY OUT: STEEP EMBANKMENTS.

THERE WAS JUST NO WAY SHE COULD HAVE CLIMBED OUT."

"People ask me if I was afraid. Well I didn't have the brain capacity to be afraid."

AFTER SPRINGER WAS RESCUED DOCTORS WERE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHY SHE'D GOTTEN SO LOST.

SHE WAS ONCE AGAIN FIGHTING CANCER.

"The tumor came back and swelled up and just knocked me out."

BUT HER RESCUE CAME AFTER EIGHT LONG DAYS WITHOUT MUCH FOOD AND NO WATER. AND HER INHALER HAD RUN OUT THE FIRST DAY.

SPRINGER HALLUCINATED.

SHE THOUGHT SHE SAW MOVIE STARS, RESCUE WORKERS AND HER OWN CHILDREN.

"I begged and I pleaded for someone to help me and no one would."

THE DAYS DRAGGED ON, AND SPRINGER DRIFTED IN AND OUT OF A PRESENT STATE OF MIND.

EVEN WHEN SHE UNDERSTOOD HER SITUATION, HER COPD PREVENTED HER FROM GETTING TO HELP.

"I could see the exit. I could see the road. I could see the trucks going by."

SHE KNEW SHE NEEDED TO FIND A WAY TO GET WATER.

SPRINGER STILL HAD THE SHOPPING BAGS FROM THE ERRANDS SHE'D RUN.

THEY MADE PERFECT RAIN CATCHERS.

"And then I'd tie them up and hang them on the car doors."

FINALLY, EARLY ON THE EIGHTH DAY, A FISHERMAN SAW KAY FROM THE RIVER.

"And I thought OK, is this guy real? Is he my miracle?"

HE WAS HER MIRACLE, AND SPRINGER GOT TO GO HOME TO HER FAMILY.

"I was not going to die down there. I'd have sat there forever. I was not going to die."

STANDUP -- SPRINGER HAD THE TUMOR REMOVED IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. DOCTORS WERE ABLE TO GET ALL OF IT-- NOW SHE'S GETTING RADIATION AND SPENDING TIME AT HOME WITH HER FOUR GRANDCHILDREN. Return to index of stories...
