VOLUNTEERS OUTSIDE WAITE HIGH SCHOOL HANDED OUT CASE AFTER CASE OF BOTTLED WATER.

NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS ALSO SET UP STATIONS WHERE PEOPLE COULD FILL BUCKETS AND JUGS FROM HUGE TANKS OF PURIFIED WATER.

THESE WERE ABOUT THE ONLY OPTIONS AS MANY AS 400-THOUSAND PEOPLE HAD TO STOP USING THEIR TAP WATER, WHEN OFFICIALS REALIZED, LATE FRIDAY, THAT THE WATER SUPPLY HAD BEEN CONTAMINATED.

"You're used to having water all the time. It's something that you're used to, and you just can't have it."

BLOOMS OF ALGAE IN LAKE ERIE CREATE A TOXIN CALLED MICROCYSTIN. WITH THE ALGAE THRIVING, THAT TOXIN ENTERS TOLEDO'S WATER SUPPLY. THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION SAYS THE TOXIN CAN CAUSE NAUSEA AND, POTENTIALLY, ACUTE LIVER FAILURE.

THE TAINTED WATER CREATED ANOTHER PROBLEM FOR HOSPITALS IN TOLEDO.

"All weekend, we've only been doing emergency surgeries -- and the issue isn't the surgery itself; it's the instrumentation that's used in the surgery. A big surgical case could have seven trays of instruments that need to be sterilized."

MANY OF THOSE INSTRUMENTS HAD TO BE SHIPPED TO HOSPITALS OUTSIDE OF TOLEDO FOR STERILIZATION.

IN MOST OF TOLEDO, THE LEVELS OF MICROCYSTIN HAD DROPPED TO WHAT IS CONSIDERED A SAFE LEVEL BY SUNDAY NIGHT, BUT OVERNIGHT, THE MAYOR STILL WASN'T READY TO LIFT THE WATER RESTRICTIONS.

"I am not going to isolate part of the city, so therefore, I've instructed our people to go re-sample and re-test, because I'm not going to take any chances with this community's safety and health."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A FEW DOWNPOURS TODAY

Onshore winds will again bring scattered activity in coastal areas this morning. More activity will be possible this afternoon, with the best chance for activity in areas east of I-75. Highs today will be in the low 90s.

Changes to the weather pattern begin on Friday. Winds will shift to the southeast and east to close the work week, ending the coastal threat for AM rain. The winds will also provide a better chance for PM storms in the Urban Corridor, with highs in the low 90s. It will be more like what you probably expect in early August.

More moisture will enter the area for the weekend, increasing the threat for scattered activity. The best chance for rain will be in the PM hours both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low 90s.

The moisture remains in place on Monday, before slightly drier air is expected to roll in by Tuesday. Temperatures will stay low 90s into next week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We are still keeping a very close eye on a disturbance sitting in the Atlantic between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa. After taking a little bit of a break yesterday, this area has shown a bit of strengthening through the night. The National Hurricane Center is now putting the risk of development in the next couple of days at 60%; the same for the the next 5 days, too.

The disturbance is still expected to move west and eventually curving northwestward. Right now, it does not look like it will be impacting Florida.

Elsewhere, weak tropical waves are developing in the Atlantic but no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

"They'll watch him for 21-days, if his condition doesn't change, and hopefully the fever will start going down before then, and I think he'll be out of the woods by that point."

DOCTORS SAY BRINGING THESE STRICKEN PATIENTS BACK TO THE UNITED STATES WAS THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION.

"Most of the medical care is supportive care, and our sense, based on speaking to providers in that part of the world, given our training, given our knowledge, given our unit, we can supply that supportive care much better than can be supplied in their current environment."

IM A CYBORG-INTRO

CYBORGS -- THEY'RE A STAPLE OF SCIENCE FICTION, FROM "STAR WARS" TO "STAR TREK" AND "THE TERMINATOR".

BUT SOME REAL-LIFE CYBORGS ARE EMERGING.

WHILE THEY AREN'T EXACTLY HALF-HUMAN, HALF-MACHINE -- THEY *ARE* USING IMPLANTABLE TECHNOLOGY IN REMARKABLE WAYS.

LAURIE SEGALL REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

IM A CYBORG-PKG

NEIL IS A MUSICIAN - AN ARTIST - AND A CYBORG.

THAT'S AN ANTENNA…SURGICALLY IMPLANTED IN HIS SKULL.

That's actually attached to you, right?

Yeah, that's an antenna. A human antenna implant.

HE IDENTIFIES AS A CYBORG.

It's feeling that you're not using technology and that you're not wearing technology, it's feeling that you are technology.

BY DEFINITION - A CYBORG IS A PERSON WHOSE HUMAN SKILLS ARE ENHANCED BY TECHNOLOGY.

AS DEVICES INCREASINGLY TAKE OVER OUR LIVES, SOME PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY PUTTING THEM IN THEIR BODIES.

NEIL IS COLORBLIND - HIS ANTENNA ALLOWS HIM TO HEAR COLOR.

So this is very red blue green

IT CONVERTS THE FREQUENCIES FOR DIFFERENT COLORS INTO THE FREQUENCIES FOR DIFFERENT SOUNDS.

Why in the first place did you decide to attach this to yourself?

I didn't want to wear technology, I wanted this to be an integral part of me so that's how I kept developing it until I found a doctor that actually drilled my head and made it implanted.

Laurie: How did you find a doctor who agreed to put that in your head?

It was very complex, cause there's bioethical committees that don't really agree with the unions between humans and technology. / So in the end I did find one and he did anonymously so he did the implant

HIS PARTNER MOON IS ALSO A SELF-DESCRIBED CYBORG

SHE WEARS AN ANTENNA THAT she says VIBRATES EVERY TIME THERE'S AN EARTHQUAKE.

Well I'm a choreographer and I want to perceive movement in the deeper way I can. / If I was alone in the planet, what movement would I be able to feel? I realized it was earthquakes that the earth kept moving constantly.

AND ONE PARTICULAR CYBORG SEES BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN EMBEDDABLE TECH

AMAL GRAAFSTRA SELLS CHIPS PEOPLE CAN IMPLANT IN THEIR BODIES

I think we've sold probably around two-three thousand implants across all the different types.

AMAL HAS ONE IN EACH HAND, AND USES IT TO SCAN IN TO HIS CAR, HOME, AND PERSONAL SAFE.

Essentially what I've done is taken an RFID implant and moved it from a pants pocket to a skin pocket.

IT SOUNDS FUTURISTIC BUT NEIL ENVISIONS A WORLD WHERE IMPLANTABLE TECH AND SURGICAL ADD ONS COULD GIVE PEOPLE SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES.

I think it will be very interesting because we'll see someone and we'll see that they have a new body part and maybe it can be an antenna and maybe it can be a tail and it can be wings, it can be anything. Or it can be a completely new bodypart. /

And then the question is, what sense you have will be a question that we'll ask you so what's your sensory extension or what senses did you create?

SHANNON AND LESA COCKRELL ARE BUILDING A NEW HOME.

AND AS YOU CAN TELL THIS ISN'T YOUR AVERAGE HOME.

"My wife and I, both of us teach, and we're always telling our kids do something different, make a difference in something."

THIS HUDSON COUPLE IS DOING EXACTLY THAT BY USING STYROFOAM BLOCKS TO FRAME THEIR FOURTEEN HUNDRED SQUARE FOOT HOME.

"We decided this is something we want to do, to one help our environment and two to make it economically possible for all of use to afford housing."

THE STYROFOAM BLOCKS ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY REPLACEMENTS FOR WOOD AND INSULATION, WHICH ULTIMATELY SAVES HOME OWNERS AN ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF MONEY.

"It's safer, it's more secure you get better energy efficiency."

NOW YOU MAY BE WONDERING HOW STYROFOAM HOLDS UP AGAINST MOTHER NATURE.WELL SHANNON SAYS IT'S AS STURDY -- IF NOT MORE -- THAN YOUR AVERAGE WOOD OR BRICK HOME.

"They don't rot, they won't mildew, they withstand 200 mile an hour winds"

HE ALSO SAID SINCE THERE IS NO WOOD YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THOSE PESTY TERMITES OR ROACHES.

SHANNON AND LESA ARE BUILDING THE HOUSE THEMSELVES WITH THE HELP OF ONE OTHER PERSON AND SAY THE BLOCKS ARE SO EASY TO INSTALL THAT ALL YOU NEED IS SOME TAPE AND SPRAY FOAM.

"My wife and I are not contractors and we are not home builders at all and we can have these walls built in about a week, week and a half."

AND AFTER THE STYROFOAM FRAMING IS DONE THE HOME WILL LOOK SIMILAR TO THIS HOME, WHICH IS ALSO MADE OF STYROFOAM.

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THE THIEF TOOK THREE BIRKIN TRAVEL BAGS WORTH 60-THOUSAND DOLLARS A PIECE AND FILLED EACH OF THEM UP WITH JEWELRY. IT'S A MILLION DOLLAR HAUL.

"All my Rolexes, my Cartiers, this was full of Chanels, Chanel watches and Cartiers and Guccis."

"Normally I keep this locked because this is my safe. If this would have been locked it would have been much harder to break because this is an inch-and-a-half thick."

ONE OF HER SECURITY CAMERAS RECORDED THE THIEF CAREFULLY COVERED HEAD TO TOE IN A JUMPSUIT, HOODIE, MASK AND GLOVES.

ROEMER SAYS THE THIEF WAS INSIDE THE WOODLANDS MANSION 40 MINUTES AND MONTGOMERY COUNTY AUTHORITIES DO NOT BELIEVE IT WAS AN INSIDE JOB.

"They say it doesn't look like an inside job at all. They said it was very professional, like too professional."

"The police said it could have been somebody that, like I said, saw all the publicity, Google Earthed it, figured it all out, flew in here, who knows?"

AND SHE SAYS THE FEELING OF VIOLATION VICTIMS HAVE CUTS ACROSS ALL INCOME LEVELS.
