FLOODING RAIN

Today's very active and wet weather pattern was enhanced with an area of low pressure above south Florida. This feature will continue to bring more downpours and thunderstorms tonight. Rainfall has been excessive today - over 6" in some Naples neighborhoods at the time of this writing - and I expect more downpours tonight. The rain showers should begin to taper off by midnight, but there could still be more showers washing in from the Gulf overnight and through tomorrow morning.

Temperatures will stay in the mid 70's this evening. It is highly likely that there will be more flooding in some places this evening and travel could be difficult tonight after sunset. Many roads and areas with poor drainage will be under water this evening.

Tomorrow's forecast looks better. We will still be under the threat of morning showers or thunderstorms as southwest winds set in for Tuesday. The afternoon threat for thunderstorms will be mainly inland tomorrow and high temperatures will top out around 90 as the clouds break-up in the afternoon. Return to index of stories...

THIS AFTERNOON - IT'S A DRINKING WATER ALL-CLEAR FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN TOLEDO OHIO.

TOLEDO, OHIO MAYOR MICHAEL COLLINS TAKING A BIG SWIG OF THE CITY'S DRINKING WATER. SHOWING HIS CONFIDENCE THAT IT'S NOW SAFE TO DRINK.

"All six tests have come back negative/ our water is safe."

THE ALL-CLEAR FOLLOWS TWO DAYS IN WHICH ABOUT 400-THOUSAND RESIDENTS IN OHIO AND SOUTHERN MICHIGAN WERE TOLD NOT TO DRINK, BATHE IN, OR EVEN BRUSH THEIR TEETH WITH WHAT WAS COMING OUT OF THEIR FAUCETS.

AND THIS, IS LIKELY THE REASON WHY.

BLOOMS OF ALGAE GROWING IN LAKE ERIE. THEY HAPPEN ALMOST EVERY SUMMER. BUT USUALLY NOT THIS EARLY IN THE YEAR, AND NOT RIGHT ON TOP OF A CITY'S WATER INTAKE.

OVER THE WEEKEND, THE AMOUNT OF ALGAE IN TOLEDO WATER REACHED TOXIC LEVELS. AND COULD HAVE BROUGHT VOMITING, RASHES, AND LIVER DAMAGE. AND BOILING IT JUST MADE THE TOXIN WORSE. THOUGH OFFICIALS SAY NO ILLNESSES WERE REPORTED.

RESEARCHERS SAY THE ALGAE BLOOMS ARE CAUSED BY FERTILIZER RUNOFF FROM FARMS NEAR LAKE ERIE. AND SEWAGE TREATMENT SLUDGE.

FOR YEARS, FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LEADERS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PREVENT THE ALGAE BLOOMS FROM HAPPENING.

"this is a chronic issue. figure out how to stop this. Complete confidence in the water supply."

DURING THE WATER BAN, TRUCKLOADS OF BOTTLED WATER POURED IN FROM ACROSS THE STATE.

THE NATIONAL GUARD USED PURIFICATION SYSTEMS TO PROVIDE SAFE WATER FOR THOSE AFFECTED.

WITH THE BAN LIFTED PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE HOPE TO RESUME LIFE AS NORMAL, BUT ARE WARY THAT THE DANGER ISN'T OVER YET.

IN TOLEDO, OHIO, CHRIS POLLONE, NBC NEWS.

LAWMAKERS HERE IN OHIO PASSED A LAW THIS YEAR REQUIRING THAT FARMERS BE TRAINED IF THEY USE COMMERCIAL FERTILIZERS ON THEIR FIELDS. ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS SAY IT'S A GOOD STEP, BUT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO STOP THESE ALGAE BLOOMS.

NEW CYBORGS-O ANI BOX WITH VIDEO

THEY'VE BEEN THE VILLAINS AND HEROES OF HOLLYWOOD SCIENCE FICTION FILMS FOR YEARS.

BUT SOME REAL-LIFE CYBORGS ARE EMERGING.

AND WHILE THEY AREN'T EXACTLY HALF-HUMAN, HALF-MACHINE. THEY *ARE* USING IMPLANTABLE TECHNOLOGY IN REMARKABLE WAYS.

LAURIE SEGALL REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

NEW CYBORGS-PKG

NEIL IS A MUSICIAN - AN ARTIST - AND A CYBORG.

THAT'S AN ANTENNA…SURGICALLY IMPLANTED IN HIS SKULL.

That's actually attached to you, right?

Yeah, that's an antenna. A human antenna implant.

HE IDENTIFIES AS A CYBORG.

It's feeling that you're not using technology and that you're not wearing technology, it's feeling that you are technology.

BY DEFINITION - A CYBORG IS A PERSON WHOSE HUMAN SKILLS ARE ENHANCED BY TECHNOLOGY.

AS DEVICES INCREASINGLY TAKE OVER OUR LIVES, SOME PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY PUTTING THEM IN THEIR BODIES.

NEIL IS COLORBLIND - HIS ANTENNA ALLOWS HIM TO HEAR COLOR.

So this is very red blue green

IT CONVERTS THE FREQUENCIES FOR DIFFERENT COLORS INTO THE FREQUENCIES FOR DIFFERENT SOUNDS.

Why in the first place did you decide to attach this to yourself?

I didn't want to wear technology, I wanted this to be an integral part of me so that's how I kept developing it until I found a doctor that actually drilled my head and made it implanted.

Laurie: How did you find a doctor who agreed to put that in your head?

It was very complex, cause there's bioethical committees that don't really agree with the unions between humans and technology. / So in the end I did find one and he did anonymously so he did the implant

HIS PARTNER MOON IS ALSO A SELF-DESCRIBED CYBORG

SHE WEARS AN ANTENNA THAT she says VIBRATES EVERY TIME THERE'S AN EARTHQUAKE.

Well I'm a choreographer and I want to perceive movement in the deeper way I can. / If I was alone in the planet, what movement would I be able to feel? I realized it was earthquakes that the earth kept moving constantly.

AND ONE PARTICULAR CYBORG SEES BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN EMBEDDABLE TECH

AMAL GRAAFSTRA SELLS CHIPS PEOPLE CAN IMPLANT IN THEIR BODIES

I think we've sold probably around two-three thousand implants across all the different types.

AMAL HAS ONE IN EACH HAND, AND USES IT TO SCAN IN TO HIS CAR, HOME, AND PERSONAL SAFE.

Essentially what I've done is taken an RFID implant and moved it from a pants pocket to a skin pocket.

IT SOUNDS FUTURISTIC BUT NEIL ENVISIONS A WORLD WHERE IMPLANTABLE TECH AND SURGICAL ADD ONS COULD GIVE PEOPLE SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES.

I think it will be very interesting because we'll see someone and we'll see that they have a new body part and maybe it can be an antenna and maybe it can be a tail and it can be wings, it can be anything. Or it can be a completely new bodypart. /

And then the question is, what sense you have will be a question that we'll ask you so what's your sensory extension or what senses did you create?

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

FEWER FULL GROWN PIGS COMBINED WITH THE ONGOING DROUGHT IN THE SOUTHWEST AND WEST HAVE FORCED FEED-PRICES TO HISTORIC HIGHS.

STILL - THE DEMAND FOR BACON CONTINUES TO SOAR.

ONCE JUST A BREAKFAST STAPLE.BACON IS NOW FOR LUNCH AND DINNER.

MOST POPULAR ON BURGERS AND CRUMBLED ON SALADS.

AND YES - EVEN DIPPED IN CHOCOLATE FOR DESSERT.

AND IT WOULD APPEAR JUST LIKE FOUR DOLLAR A GALLON GASOLINE - PEOPLE JUST HAVE TO HAVE WHAT THEY HAVE TO HAVE.

MOS A104 @ 19;05;43;17 - I am a bacon aficionado definitely.

MOS A104 @ 18;46;19;26 - I'm not going to stop eating bacon I love it.

BEING A MODEL SEEMS SO GLAMOROUS, BUT MAINTAINING THAT RUNWAY READY LOOK TAKES WORK, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THAT BEAUTIFUL HAIR!

"With my job it's undergoing a lot of heat & a lot of pulling"

AT MARIA BONITA HAIR SALON IN SOHO, A 50 YEAR OLD BRAZILIAN TREATMENT IS MAKING A COMEBACK. IT INVOLVES A BURNING CANDLE YET KEEPS YOUR LENGTH.

"We're using fire to actually end up the split ends."

Alicia: What's the Brazilian name for it? There's actually a technical term.

"Yeah, the technical term is called velaterapia."

HAIR EXPERT - RICARDO GOMES - LIGHTS UP A CANDLE AND GETS STARTED!

"So actually what you guys can see is by twisting the hair, I have all this hair coming out and that's what gets burned. and the candle, we don't get too close to the hair. If I run my fingers through it, they just fall off."

Alicia: So those are all the split ends?

"Yes."

"the cool thing about it is that when you burn the hair it stops right where it's supposed to stop because you're twisting it, so the hair is actually safe inside of that."

AFTER ALL THE HAIR HAS BEEN BURNED. GIVE IT A WASH. AND A DEEP CONDITIONING.

"so this is the final process-I'm just blow drying her hair as you can see i invite you to just run your fingers through her hair."

Alicia: That's a huge difference

"feel the texture, it looks nicer, healthier, stronger. It-you can feel the difference. It's silky and nice and she's ready to go." Return to index of stories...
