ONSHORE WIND PATTERN CONTINUES

Onshore wind from the west and southwest will continue to push in scattered showers from the Gulf of Mexico through this morning and early afternoon.

The wind pattern in place will keep the opportunity for scattered afternoon and evening showers in the region as well. The most widespread coverage of afternoon rain though should mainly pop in the inland areas of the state. Highs today should range from the upper 80s along the immediate coastline to low 90s further inland.

On Wednesday we'll enter a bit of a transition phase with winds become more northwesterly. That should push our most widespread rain opportunities further back in the day toward the afternoon and evening. Highs on Wednesday are expected in the low 90s.

THE PLANE CARRYING NANCY WRITEBOL WILL ARRIVE IN THE UNITED STATES LATER TODAY.

THE AMERICAN MISSIONARY WHO CONTRACTED EBOLA FOLLOWS THE SAME ROUTE AS HER COLLEAGUE, DR. KENT BRANTLY, WHO ARRIVED AT ATLANTA'S EMORY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OVER THE WEEKEND.

DR. THOMAS CAIRNS KNOWS A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH.

"A lot of severe flu-like symptoms. Classic flu but much, much worse. Headache and fever. Very high fever. Nausea. Vomiting."

HE CONTRACTED EBOLA IN 1972. HE SAYS IT TOOK WEEKS FOR HIM TO START GETTING BETTER.

".and then gradually recovering over another six weeks before I was even able to go back up to the hospital to start working, and then, after that, trying to gradually regain my strength. I had lost about 20 pounds."

WRITEBOL AND BRANTLY HAVE THE BENEFIT OF BEING TREATED IN THE UNITED STATES. THEY'VE ALSO BEEN GIVEN AN EXPERIMENTAL SERUM -- KNOWN NOW ONLY AS Z-MAPP -- NEVER BEFORE USED ON HUMANS.

WITHIN AN HOUR OF GETTING THAT SERUM, BRANTLY'S CONDITION IS SAID TO HAVE IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY.

"I do hope it was as impressive as being described, because that bodes very well for that particular product."

.BUT, SADLY, THE EXPERIMENTAL DRUG CAN'T HELP ANYONE ELSE AFFECTED BY THE OUTBREAK IN WESTERN AFRICA.

"We don't know if these patients are naturally getting better or whether the serum is really doing something, so before we give the banner of cure to the serum, a lot more studies and a lot more information needs to be gathered."

"There are two state laws that this judge just had the courage to say these laws do not pass constitutional muster and these laws are not constitutional."

THE INITIAL MOTION WAS FILED ON BEHALF OF BRASSNER. SHE'S CAUGHT BETWEEN A VERMONT CIVIL UNION WITH HER EX AND HER FUTURE. VERMONT WON'T DISSOLVE THE UNION BECAUSE BRASSNER'S FORMER PARTNER IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. AND SINCE FLORIDA DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE UNION, THE ISSUE CAN'T BE RESOLVED HERE EITHER, WITHOUT LEGALLY ENDING THE CIVIL UNION. HEATHER AND JENNIFER CAN'T LEGALLY MARRY. EVEN IN STATES WHERE GAY MARRIAGE IS LEGAL.

STANDUP - "Brassner says she feels free after this declaration. Even though she's not yet free from that 2002 civil union. it is a step in that direction."

"We didn't expect him to rule without a stay. I didn't expect him to rule without a stay. so this is just the footwork for more to come."

"The tides are turning on the issue of same sex marriage throughout this country."

AN AUTOMATIC STAY OF THE RULING, HOWEVER. PUTS EVERYTHING ON HOLD. PENDING APPEALS BY THE STATE.

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TROPICAL UDPATE

The newly-downgraded Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn in the Atlantic.

The storm is located well off the east coast of the Carolinas and moving away from the mainland United States to the north-northeast at 22 mph.

Max sustained winds are holding at 65 mph, with a storm central pressure of 1005 mb.

The storm will continue its north-northeast progression and remains no threat to Southwest Florida or the east coast of the U.S. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE BEING THE NATION'S TOP KILLER, WHO

WOULDN'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE THEM? NOW GETTING A

BEAT ON YOUR HEART HEALTH IS EASIER THAN EVER BEFORE.

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:08 The nice thing about these tests is that they're non-invasive. There's going to be no

discomfort with them, they can be done in one setting, they're quick and easy and they

can give us a great insight into the heart.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The heart lays at the center or 'heart' of our vascular system. Once blood leaves the

heart it circulates throughout the body. And problems can pop up anywhere down

the line. A group of 6 cardio tests, bundled together can provide a real-time health

snapshot.

IT BEGINS WITH AN ECHOCARDIOGRAM:

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:18 That's an ultrasound of the heart. We're able to look at the size and function of the

heart. We're able to look for any evidence of previous heart attack, heart damage, or

any significant leakage of the heart valve.

NEXT IS AN ULTRASOUND OF THE AORTA WHICH LOOKS FOR ANEURYSMS.

FOLLOWED BY A CAROTID ULTRASOUND.

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:12 We ultrasound the two arteries inside the neck and we look for evidences of

blockages. Severe blockages can actually increase your risk of stroke.

THE ANKLE-BRACHIAL TEST IS A TELLING TEST MOST PEOPLE HAVE NEVER

HEARD OF.

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:35 We look at the blood flow down the legs. 2:08 And it's a very easy test to do. We

just put some blood pressure cuffs down the legs in the same way that we put blood

pressure cuffs on the arms.

AND DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE EKG-WHICH PACKS A POWERFUL PUNCH.

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:27 Even though it's a simple test, it can give us a lot of information. It can look for

heart arrhythmias, it can look for irregular heartbeats, it can also give us information

about whether there's been old heart attacks.

THE FINAL SCREENING IS A BLOOD PRESSURE TEST. TAKEN WITH THE

OTHERS IT PROVIDES A FULLER PICTURE OF YOUR HEALTH STATUS.

DR. LYNNE EINBINDER/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

7:16 The reason why we pick these tests is because these are very serious conditions

that it can pick up.

FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
