PETER AND KELLIE. WE'RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT MAJOR GENERAL HAROLD GREENE AS WELL.

HE IS A NATIVE OF UPSTATE NEW YORK. BUT WAS RAISED RIGHT HERE IN FLORIDA.

AND WHAT HAPPENED TODAY IS RAISING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE U-S WITHDRAWAL FROM THAT WAR TORN NATION.

BUT IN WASHINGTON. THE CONSENSUS SEEMS TO BE THE ASSASSINATION WILL NOT CHANGE PRESIDENT OBAMA'S PULLOUT PLAN. Return to index of stories...

US GENERAL KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN-PKG

IT HAPPENED AT THIS MILITARY TRAINING ACADEMY OUTSIDE KABUL, THE U-S MAJOR GENERAL WAS ON A ROUTINE VISIT WHEN, WITNESSES SAY, A LONE AFGHAN SOLDIER IN UNIFORM OPENED FIRE WITH HIS ASSAULT RIFLE. THE U-S GENERAL DIED, A GERMAN GENERAL AND MORE THAN A DOZEN U-S AND COALITION TROOPS WERE WOUNDED, AND THE GUNMAN WAS KILLED.

Sot: Josh Earnest, White House Press Secretary :22-:28

"this shooting is, of course a painful reminder of the service and sacrifice that our men and women in uniform make every day."

THE LAST TIME A TWO STAR U-S GENERAL DIED IN COMBAT WAS VIETNAM.

IN AFGHANISTAN, SO CALLED INSIDER ATTACKS KILLED 53 COALITION TROOPS IN 2012. NEW SAFETY PROCEDURES WERE PUT IN PLACE, AND THE NUMBER DROPPED TO 16 LAST YEAR,

BUT NOW A GENERAL IS DEAD.

Sot: John Kirby, Pentagon Press Secretary

"it's a pernicious threat"

MEANING DAMAGING, BUT THE PENTAGON SPOKESMAN DENIED THAT INSIDER ATTACKS

WILL AFFECT THE HANDOFF OF COMBAT LEADERSHIP IN AFGHANISTAN BY DECEMBER.

Sot: John Kirby, Pentagon Press Secretary :57-1:04

"no indication that there is degradation of trust between coalition members and their afghan counterparts"

PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS ORDERED 10 THOUSAND U-S TROOPS TO STAY AND HELP AFTER MOST U-S FORCES LEAVE. SHOULD TODAY'S TRAGEDY CHANGE THAT PLAN?

Sot: Sen. Robert Menendez 1:13-1:21

"we have shed a lot of lives and national treasure in Afghanistan and we want to see the successful conclusion"

MORE THAN 22 HUNDRED U-S SERVICEMEMBERS HAVE DIED IN THAT WARZONE.

TODAY AT LEAST ONE MORE. Return to index of stories...

NEWSPAPERS ARE OFTEN LAST ON THE LIST.

David McMullen, Alva FL

:14:45 I havent had one in probably 20 years. You don't really need

them any more.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME BIG SHIFTS IN THREE LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS RECENTLY.

JUST LAST WEEK- NAPLES DAILY NEWS ANNOUNCED ITS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT-

FOX 4 TELEVISION SWITCHED TOO--NOW OPERATED BY SCRIPPS.

MEDIA GIANT- GANNETT, WHICH OWNS NEWS PRESS--

JUST ANNOUNCED IT WILL BE SPLITTING INTO TWO COMPANIES

1- FOCUSED ON BROADCAST AND DIGITAL

THE OTHER- SOLEY ON NEWSPAPERS.

BUT WHY?

Hoffman, Professor

:27:56 Large companies often don't move quickly and often times are

trying to catch up.

FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN MARKETING PROFESSOR, DAVID HOFFMAN SAID MEDIA

COMPANIES COULD BE DIVERSIFYING FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.

ONE-IT CREATES MORE, FOCUSED, MARKETING OPTIONS-

TWO- FINANCIAL TROUBLE-

:22:35 newspaper delivery is becoming very expensive, first of

all-just the physical delivery of it is huge.

GANETT SAID THE SPLIT WILL ALLOW THEIR NEWSPAPERS TO BECOME DEBT FREE-

HOFFMAN SAID- THE NEWSPAPERS SPIN OFF--

COULD MAKE IT EASIER TO **SELL OFF DOWN THE ROAD IF NECESSARY.

Hoffman

from a management perspective, if you've got a product and it's not

doing well, like a paper, a newspaper, you cant just keep writing,

you've got to come up with an alternative.

THE FUTURE OF NEWSPAPERS IS NOT WRITTEN IN BLACK AND WHITE-

BUT HOFFMAN SAID COMPANIES ARE SEEING A PATTERN.

Hoffman

:23:06 they could read the paper- but it wont be on paper. I could see

that happening more and more.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

FORECAST: Less rain expected Wednesday

Compliments of an onshore westerly wind flow, scattered showers and thunderstorms were able to impact areas of Lee and Charlotte Counties this morning with some locally heavy rainfall. Doppler radar-estimates place between.5" and 2" of rain early today in parts of northern Cape Coral, North Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.

This afternoon though, conditions are notably quieter. Though we will need to account for the chance of an shower or storm tonight, we will finish the day with far less activity than we had when it started.

On Wednesday expect more of a northwest wind flow early in the day. That means the morning hours are expected to be drier than how Tuesday morning was. Through the mid-day hours a passing shower or storm is possible along the US41 corridor. With the seabreeze coming onshore from the Gulf of Mexico, the majority of any showers or storms on Wednesday afternoon would be expected along and east of the I-75 corridor.

Temperatures on Wednesday should be warmer and more seasonal than today. Highs are likely to reach 93 at Fort Myers, 90 at Naples and 94 at Lehigh Acres.

Late afternoon and early evening showers and storms are expected Thursday and Friday with highs topping out in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn off the east coast of the United States but poses to theat to mainland North America.

Data shows the storm is moving north-northeast at 22 mph. Maximum sustained winds are still at 60 mph, but the movement of Bertha keeps it away from major land masses.

As the storm moves generally parallel with the eastern American coast it is expected to continue weakening as it advances into the northern Atlantic Ocean.

No other tropical cyclones are active in the Gulf, Caribbean or Atlantic. Return to index of stories...

LET ME EXPLAIN-

SANTILLO WHO IS ALSO THE FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF THE SWFL MILITARY

MUSEUM AND LIBRARY

HAS BEEN HELPING FAMILIES CREATE THESE BANNERS TO COMMEMORATE WAR HEROES-

00:12:07 "We thought it would be a great tribute and honor our

veterans that are living and have passed away."

SO HOW DID WE GET TO STREETLIGHTS?

COUNCIL MEMBER RICK WILLIAMS EXPLAINS THE PUSH BEHIND THE POLE POSITION.

00:20:54 "Gwynne Hickman from the council office brought a picture

that she had gotten from another city, it's just a wonder idea."

THIS WAS THAT PICTURE-

CITY LEADERS IMMEDIATELY SET TO FIND OUT IF IT COULD BE DONE HERE.

forward with this its already been checked."

SO WAS COST- NONE - EXCEPT FOR THE LABOR OF GETTING THE BANNERS UP-

THE IDEA IS TO HAVE BUSINESSES SPONSOR THE BANNERS- IN THE C-R-A

PROPONENTS HOPE FEW WOULD OBJECT-

00:13:41 "I'm sure some people are going to say we don't want those

hanging on our streetlights but you can't be patriotic if would object

to something like this."

THE FINAL DECISION WILL COME FROM THE CITY'S C-R-A BOARD-

IF APPROVED THE BANNERS COULD GO UP BY END OF YEAR-
