FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A FEW DOWNPOURS

The onshore wind flow continues today and while the rain chances are not gone, they are lower today. There could be just a passing shower from the morning through midday time frame. Then there will be scattered showers and storms in the afternoon and evening, with the bulk of that activity expected near and east of I-75.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be warmer and more seasonal than yesterday. Highs are likely to reach 93 at Fort Myers, 90 at Naples and 94 at Lehigh Acres.

Late afternoon and early evening showers and storms are expected Thursday and Friday with highs topping out in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to churn off the east coast of the United States but poses to threat to mainland North America.

Data shows the storm is moving northeast at 23 mph. Maximum sustained winds are down to 50 mph, and the movement of Bertha keeps it away from major land masses.

As the storm moves generally parallel with the eastern American coast it is expected to continue weakening as it advances into the northern Atlantic Ocean.

No other tropical cyclones are active in the Gulf, Caribbean or Atlantic. Return to index of stories...

MED MARIJUANA-PKG

THEY TRY TO LIVE AS NORMAL AS LIFE AS POSSIBLE.

BUT AFTER 14 YEARS OF EPILEPTIC SEIZURES WITH HIS SON, JACE, MIKER BRATTON SAYS NOTHING IS NORMAL.

"There are times you wonder if this could be the one that takes him out."

FOR ALMOST HIS WHOLE LIFE, JACE WOULD HAVE FRIGHTENING SEIZURES EVERY NIGHT.

HE WENT THROUGH 17 DIFFERENT DRUGS. IN SOME CASES THE CURE WAS WORSE THAN THE DISEASE.

"One drug, when Jace was a little guy, it caused him so much rage and anger that he ground his baby teeth to the gums. To the gums."

THEN THE FAMILY HEARD THAT NEW LEAF ENTERPRISES WAS GIVING AWAY A MARIJUANA EXTRACT CALLED CBD. IT DOESN'T GET YOU HIGH AND IT'S KNOWN OVERSEAS FOR STOPPING SEIZURES.

AFTER ABOUT 2-1/2 MONTHS, JACE WENT FROM SEIZURES EVERY NIGHT TO ONE EVERY THREE WEEKS.

"it's not like a light switch. It's a more, kind of, gradual awakening."

"Because marijuana is considered as dangerous as heroin by the federal government there has been very little study of its effects in America. Here at Children's Hospital doctors can't even recommend CBD, even though many believe it's a viable option."

"We're really hopeful for that silver bullet drug."

DR. RUSS SANETO SAYS CBD IS ABOUT AS EFFECTIVE AS PHARMACEUTICALS IN CONTROLLING SEIZURES, WITH APPARENTLY FAR FEWER SIDE EFFECTS. HE BELIEVES WHILE MORE STUDY IS NEEDED ABOUT LONG TERM EFFECTS, THE CBD BEING GIVEN TO NEW LEAF'S PATIENTS MAY BE A BETTER OPTION THAN WHAT THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE PEDDLING.

"In that it's working for some patients in this population that before was intractable, means that there's hope for a group of patients that couldn't be controlled in the past."

HOPE IS WHAT JACE AND HIS FAMILY NOW HAVE.

NOW 16, THEY HOPE JACE WILL ONE DAY BE ABLE TO DRIVE - SOMETHING HE COULD NEVER DO WITH UNCONTROLLABLE SEIZURES.

"NORMAL" NOW A BIT MORE OF A REALITY.

"We're getting closer and closer to that, which is pretty exciting." Return to index of stories...
