TRACKING SLIGHTLY DRIER AIR

The onshore winds continued on Thursday, with scattered showers and storms developing. This activity may push back into the Urban Corridor later this evening, with temps holding in the 80s. Expect the storms to diminish overnight, with lows in the upper 70s.

Slightly drier air works into the region starting Friday. Winds will shift from the west to the south and east, reducing the threat for morning rain showers. Showers and storms will develop in the PM hours and slowly diminish in the evening. Highs on Friday will be in the low 90s.

The weekend is still looking fairly decent, with most of both days dry. Showers and storms will develop in the afternoon and early evening, but these will be widely scattered. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low to mid 90s.

Even more dry air works into Southwest Florida to start next week, keeping rain and storm chances low. Only an isolated shower will be possible on Monday, with highs in the mid 90s.

Rain chances do increase as we move through next week, with highs holding in the low to mid 90s.

OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS THE STOCK MARKET RECOVERY HAS PUSHED UP RETIREMENT PLAN VALUES TO A POINT THAT MANY AMERICANS ARE AGAIN CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY OF MAKING AN EARLY LEAP INTO RETIREMENT.

HAS THE STOCK MARKET RECOVERY OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE AN EARLY RETIREMENT?

FINANCIAL ADVISOR JIM NOLTE IS HERE WITH SOME PERSPECTIVE. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

Certainly, the value of our 401K plans has gone up a bunch since 2009.

· The dream of early retirement really has been a part of the American culture. People are feeling better financially. Just a few years ago many people were convinced they would never retire. As the market recovered that change to maybe I can retire and when the market reached new highs, some people began to feel they might be able to make that early retirement leap of faith.

· The problem is that life is really more complicated today. Making that decision to retire early requires more than just adding up your investment account balances to see if they have reached a magic number. We have to take into consideration a multitude of issues including living longer the rising cost of healthcare in America and the challenge of living on a budget.

· The first question to ask yourself is have I saved enough? Making a decision to retire during a bull market is probably less stressful but it can make the math a lot more complicated. Since 2009 the S&P 500 has generated positive returns every year. If you had $500,000 in an S&P index fund when it hit the financial crisis low in March 2009 your account would be worth over $1,500,000 including reinvested dividends today. That's a cumulative return of over 200%.

· That feels like a whole lot of money in the bank. But the stock market routinely gives up some of those gains. A sharp selloff in the market occurring during the first two years of your retirement could do some serious damage to your retirement plan if you are forced to sell off your investments at low prices to cover your living expenses.

· That means that basing your financial plan on stock values when the market has reached an all-time high may not produce accurate results. Some financial planners base retirement plans on discounted portfolio values to take in consideration market corrections.

· Another method planners use is to base withdrawal schedules from your investment accounts based on current immediate annuity payouts.

· Another question to ask yourself is if you can live on a budget? Controlling your spending during retirement is crucial to making your savings last. For most people, that's a lot harder than it sounds. One way to test your budgetary skills is to live on a strict budget for six months at a rate that would translate to a 4% return on your existing investments.

· Most soon to be retirees have several sources of income that include Social Security, personal investments, and retirement plans. Planning when to take money from each of these sources can be a very smart move. For one thing, in many cases it's a smart move to postpone taking Social Security benefits for as long as you can. Postponing Social Security payments can mean much larger lifetime payouts.

· One of the most important questions to ask is how you will pay for healthcare? Many people assume that after age 65 Medicare pays for all your health expenses. If you retire before age 65 most people assume that they will be spending about the same amount of money for health insurance as they did when they were working. That's a big mistake.

· Can we still dream about an early retirement? Of course we can. But it's a lot more complicated for today's baby boomers than it was for their parents. Return to index of stories...

Those two American aid workers infected in Liberia, are now receiving treatment in the U.S.

And a Spanish missionary priest who tested positive for Ebola was medevaced from Liberia to Spain -- the first Ebola patient treated in Europe.

IN ATLANTA, Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol remain in isolation at Emory University Hospital.

NBC NEWS has learned the patients are in rooms on two sides of Emory's isolation unit. Doctors change into protective gear here, and family members are able to visit through the glass.

Just one day after the ambulance ride seen round the world, NBC's Kate Snow rode in the vehicle used to transport both Writebol and Brantley with lead paramedic Gail Stallings:

SOT:

12:27:17 KS: THE TWO PATIENTS, DID THEY TALK TO YOU?

GS: THEY DID, THEY WERE BOTH TALKING TO US.

/

12:31:14 KS: I THINK WE HAD THIS IMAGE THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE UNCONSCIOUS.

GS: I THINK THAT'S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION WITH MOST OF IT. / YOU ASSUME THE MOVIE CONTACT AND OUTBREAK. YOU ASSUME EVERYBODY'S IN THIS HORROR SHOW WITH WEIRD ZOMBIE PEOPLE THAT ARE YOU KNOW.

KS: AND THE REALITY?

GS: AND IT'S NOT ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THAT.

The paramedics say Nancy Writebol wore several protective layers: clothing, a hazmat suit, a face mask, and another nonpermeable layer.

And the ambulance itself was lined with plastic -- later removed and incinerated -- before the entire vehicle was decontaminated TWICE.

For the paramedics, transporting the two patients was just part of the job:

12:32:09 GS: For us, this is what we do. This is what we train for. This is our job. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TROPICAL UPDATE

With Bertha now history, things are very quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and the open waters of the Atlantic.

A couple of tropical waves are floating between the Lesser Antilles and Africa, but those will have a difficult time developing.

No major activity is expected in the tropics over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

RON MOTT STAND UP @ 20:10.38 - In life, as in death, supply and demand drive costs. Here at this suburban Boston cemetery, plots are a relative bargain compared to some other cities. 33-thousand people are buried here with room for another 50 or 60-thousand or so.

THOUGH NEVER CHEAP. MORE REASONABLE REAL ESTATE EXISTS.

SOT MOTT 2-SHOT @ 195616 - the average cost of a plot here is how much? $3400

SOT LARRY GLYNN @ 194929 - In the last 10 years we haven't really raised our prices too much due to the economy / it's basically based on what it costs us to operate the cemetery.

IN SOME SOCIETIES. CREMATIONS ARE BEGINNING TO RIVAL TRADITIONAL BURIALS. THEY ARE MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE GENERALLY. AND OFFER AN ENDLESS ARRAY OF FOREVER HOMES. WHETHER AT SEA. A NATIONAL MONUMENT. VIRTUALLY ANYWHERE.
