Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

JUST A FEW PM DOWNPOURS

The onshore flow will continue today. However, the likelihood of AM showers is very low. The better chance for rain will be in the PM hours, especially along and east of I-75. Highs on Thursday will be in the low 90s with heat index values reaching to near 100 degrees.

Drier air does start entering the area on Friday. This will reduce the chance of PM scattered storms, but not completely end the threat. Highs on Friday will be in the low 90s.

Even more dry air works in for the weekend. Right now, Saturday looks slightly wetter than Sunday but the majority of both weekend days are expected to be dry. The best chance for storms each day will be in the afternoon and early evening hours. Highs will be in the low to mid 90s.

Next week looks fairly quiet as the dry air remains in place. Just a few widely scattered storms are expected each afternoon, with highs in the low to mid 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical Storm Bertha became post-tropical Wednesday morning, ending it's run as the second named storm in the Atlantic basin. Otherwise, no major activity is expected in the tropics through the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

S/Mike Cantin / National Weather Service:46-:51

"it looks like it should retain its strength long enough to still be a hurricane by the time it approaches the big island."

5:30 WEATHER LEAD-WX WALL

TO NARROW THIS ALL DOWN - WE LOOKED THROUGH DISTRICT DOCUMENTS AND FOUND OUT THAT 36 SCHOOLS EITHER MISSED OR DIDN'T REPORT THE DRILL SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IN 2012. THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS WERE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS - TWENTY OF THEM DIDN'T MEET GUIDELINES - SEVEN MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND EIGHT HIGH SCHOOLS ALSO DIDN'T.

SO HERE'S WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NOW - LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL FOLLOW THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S FIRE DRILL RECOMMENDATIONS - THAT MEANS TWO DRILLS WILL BE DONE DURING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF SCHOOL AND ONE EACH MONTH AFTER THAT. THE OLD POLICY CALLED FOR ONE DRILL IN THE FIRST 30 DAYS. THAT'S WHAT DISTRICT STAFF WILL BE GOING OVER TODAY.

NOW TO MAKE SURE THESE SAME MISTAKES DON'T HAPPEN AGAIN, THERE'S TALK TO CREATE A NEW DEPARTMENT TO ENSURE ALL DRILLS GET DONE AND ARE PROPERLY RECORDED. Return to index of stories...

COULD EBOLA IMPACT THE U-S?

TODAY LAWMAKERS HEAR FROM THE CDC. THE STATE DEPARTMENT AND OTHERS.

INCLUDING SAMARITANS PURSE. THE RELIEF ORGANIZATION WHOSE TWO AMERICAN EBOLA PATIENTS ARE IN ATLANTA BEING GIVEN AN EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT.

"I think we've got to let the science guide us. I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful."

WEDNESDAY THE CDC UPPED ITS ALERT TO LEVEL ONE. SIGNALING A SERIOUS HEALTH EMERGENCY THAT COULD LAST A WHILE.

AS FLU SEASON BEGINS, THE CDC'S PULLING PEOPLE OFF THAT. SENDING 50 MORE TO AFRICA IN THE NEXT MONTH.

WITH CONCERNS GROWING HERE. EXPERTS ARE CLARIFYING WHAT EBOLA CAN AND CANNOT DO:

"If you're just sitting in a room with someone and you're talking to them or you're accidentally walking down the street past one, it's not contagious."

BUT CONTACT WITH BODILY FLUIDS IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. THAT'S WHY WE'RE SEEING EXTRAORDINARY ATTEMPTS TO ISOLATE PATIENTS.

"They'll come into an emergency room and say 'I have a fever, I have diarrhea.' The first thing you ask is "What is your travel history?' And if they say 'I've been to a West African country', then immediately you would isolate them and protect the people that are taking care of them."

THAT'S WHY EXPERTS THINK AN OUTBREAK HERE IS POSSIBLE, BUT HIGHLY UNLIKELY.
