FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Another Round of Storms Possible Friday

With a light onshore wind direction Friday, any showers and storms that do get going will be primarily inland like Thursday. Also, activity looks to be pretty isolated through the day.

Nothing else out of the ordinary to wrap up the work week here in Southwest Florida. Expect high temperatures to top out right around 92° or 93° again this afternoon.

A sneak peek at the weekend.

Both Saturday & Sunday will be hot and humid with highs running a few degrees above the normal. Each day rain chances will be possible farther inland, leaving most coastal areas pretty dry - beach plans are a go.

Some drier air pushes into the region early next week which will keep rain chances lower than normal Monday and possibly Tuesday too. Return to index of stories...

WER RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

Scattered showers and storms again developed in the PM hours on Friday, as highs climbed into the low to mid 90s. The storms may push into the Urban Corridor later this evening, as temps fall into the 80s. We'll see the activity end overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

Slightly drier air works into the region on Saturday. We could see some morning rain in the coastal areas, but this activity will diminish by mid-morning. Expect more storms to develop in the PM hours, with the coverage not as great as earlier in the week. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

More dry air arrives on Sunday, and this will likely reduce the threat for storms. A couple widely scattered cells will be possible to close the weekend, but most areas will stay dry. Highs on Sunday will push into the mid 90s.

The dry and hot weather sticks around to start next week. Just an isolated pop-up shower will be possible on Monday, as temps again climb into the mid 90s.

Tuesday also looks fairly dry, with low rain chances and highs in the mid 90s.

More moisture does return into the region by midweek, raising the threat for PM showers and storms. Highs to close the week will be in the low 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

It is still very quiet in the open waters of the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean as we move into the weekend. The atmosphere across the tropics is not very conducive for development right now.

HOMEOWNER LANDLORDS-ONCAM

A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE DECIDING ON WHETHER TO SELL THEIR HOMES.

SELLERS ARE EITHER UNDERWATER ON THEIR MORTGAGES OR ARE WAITING FOR PRICES TO GO HIGHER. BUT SOMETHING ELSE IS ADDING TO THE LACK OF LISTINGS.

DIANA OLICK UNCOVERS A NEW TREND. Return to index of stories...

HOMEOWNER LANDLORDS-PKG

NAT SOUND AROUND THE HOUSE

SHELLY AND KEON BURLEY ARE LOVING THEIR NEW HOME IN SUBURBAN BALTIMORE.

IT IS FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF THEIR ---

LAST HOME IN THE HEART OF THE CITY -- THE HOME THEY ARE NOW RENTING OUT.

"It really wasn't worth it to take that $30K hit when we could get someone to rent the property, have them pay down the mortgage."

30 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THAT'S HOW FAR UNDERWATER THEY WERE ON THE DOWNTOWN HOME'S MORTGAGE. RATHER THAN TAKE THE HIT, THEY TOOK THE RENT -- LIKE SO MANY OTHERS ARE DOING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

"Now, as people are starting to move, and to sell, individuals, they're also turning into landlords by choice. And that is definitely having a dent in the inventory numbers."

THE SUPPLY OF HOMES FOR SALE IS FINALLY STARTING TO RISE, BUT IT IS STILL TIGHT, WHICH IS PUSHING HOME PRICES HIGHER. RENTS ARE ALSO RISING, AND THAT WAS ENOUGH TO CONVINCE THE BURLEYS THAT BEING LANDLORDS IS WORTH IT.

I put it on Craig's list and had people responding to the ad instantly.

"I was probably more stressed than my wife."

THREE MONTHS LATER, THEY AGREE IT WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE, EVEN AFTER PUTTING 20% DOWN ON THE NEW HOUSE AND CARRYING TWO MORTGAGES.

"We just cut out all the non-essentials and we were able to stockpile the down payment quicker so we could move out and move to this lovely home."

THE BALLENTINES KEPT THEIR OLD HOME BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDERWATER.

BUT OTHERS ARE CHOOSING TO BECOME LANDLORDS FOR THE OPPOSITE REASON. THEY HAVE GAINED SO MUCH EQUITY IN THEIR HOMES RECENTLY THAT THEY CAN USE THAT TO BUY THE NEW HOME AND STILL EARN RENTAL INCOME ON TOP OF THAT.

"Some of them are all cash. Our agents are seeing people come through their door with the cash in hand to buy that next place. A lot of them obviously don't need that equity in their former home or they're able to tap some of it out and then use it to buy the next place."

nats

WHATEVER THE CASE, THE TREND IS GROWING -- AND IN TURN SHRINKING THE SUPPLY NEEDED TO KEEP THE RECOVERY IN HOME SALES GOING STRONG. Return to index of stories...

IT IS STUPEFYING TO MANY DOCTORS: WHY ONLY A FRACTION OF PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM A CANCER SCREENING, CHOSE TO GET IT.

THAT'S THE CASE WITH THE COLONOSCOPY- THE ONLY TEST THAT CAN ALSO PREVENT DISEASE.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER SEPARATES FACT FROM FICTION. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

OF ALL THE CANCER SCREENINGS, COLONOSCOPY IS SURELY THE MOST UNDER-APPRECIATED.

DR. IRMA CRUZ/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

1:11: Yes. There's a miscommunication, misunderstanding about what the whole procedure is.

LET THE MYTH-BUSTING BEGIN: COLONOSCOPY IS A POWERFUL PROGNOSTICATOR, BUT IS NOT A MAJOR MEDICAL UNDERTAKING AND DOES NOT REQUIRE HOSPITALIZATION.

DR. IRMA CRUZ/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

1:11 They don't need to miss a lot of days of work, it should not be painful experience. It's a very safe procedure that is very well tolerated and done routinely.

ANOTHER FALSEHOOD: IF YOU DON'T HAVE SYMPTOMS, YOU DON'T NEED ONE. ACTUALLY THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE- COLORECTAL CANCERS HAVE NO EARLY SIGNS, WHICH IS WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO STICK TO THE GUIDELINES.

DR. IRMA CRUZ/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

8:10 The majority of people that develop colon cancer are 50 and older. That's why we start screening at age 50. 7:45 But if there is family history of colon cancer or polyps, the recommendation is to do it sooner.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

It is an absolute truth that colonoscopy is one of the most successful screenings ever. In fact, it is the only test that can not only find cancer, but may prevent it from forming.

DR. IRMA CRUZ/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

3:42 We use a flexible tube that has a light and a camera and we're able to see the lining of the colon and basically we're looking for polyps which are abnormal growths in the lining. We can remove them and this decreases the chances of getting colon cancer.

LASTLY- A PARTIAL TRUISM INVOLVING THE DREADED PREP: PATIENTS MUST TAKE A LAXATIVE TO CLEAR THE COLON- BUT THE AFFECTS ARE SHORT-LIVED.

DR. IRMA CRUZ/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

7:28: They can eat right after. 3:07 The next day you can go back to your normal activities.

MAKING THE BENEFITS OF THIS LEAST-LOVED SCREENING FAR OUTWEIGH THE INCONVENIENCE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
