FIRST WEATHER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LOWER RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

Scattered showers and storms again developed in the PM hours on Friday, as highs climbed into the low to mid 90s. The storms may push into the Urban Corridor later this evening, as temps fall into the 80s. We'll see the activity end overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

Slightly drier air works into the region on Saturday. We could see some morning rain in the coastal areas, but this activity will diminish by mid-morning. Expect more storms to develop in the PM hours, with the coverage not as great as earlier in the week. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

More dry air arrives on Sunday, and this will likely reduce the threat for storms. A couple widely scattered cells will be possible to close the weekend, but most areas will stay dry. Highs on Sunday will push into the mid 90s.

The dry and hot weather sticks around to start next week. Just an isolated pop-up shower will be possible on Monday, as temps again climb into the mid 90s.

Tuesday also looks fairly dry, with low rain chances and highs in the mid 90s.

More moisture does return into the region by midweek, raising the threat for PM showers and storms. Highs to close the week will be in the low 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

It is still very quiet in the open waters of the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean as we move into the weekend. The atmosphere across the tropics is not very conducive for development right now.

No major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

***NAT of playing with dog

His high spirits

***NAT

And playful attitude can't hide just how skinny this five year old is.

49:46-50

He's about as low in a body score index as you can be

A 1 on a scale of 1-to-5.

As close to death as you can get.

49:53-58

You should not have visible ribs or hip bones protruding by any means

But sadly-- this isn't the first time Ria Brown has seen a dog this unhealthy.

48:37-49

They just simply don't care. They don't place any value on thy animal and unfortunately it's not an inanimate object

Since last august lee county animal services have investigated nearly 2,000 cases of animal cruelty.

Nothing short of an epidemic.

48:18-28

We see this all the time everyday our officers go out and they see dogs that are in poor condition like this

54:59-55:07

It's sad. It looked like someone neglected it.

Jarrall Barnett doesn't live too far from where the near-death dog was found.

54:21-24

They usually come to my house and sit on the back if my dad's porch

And is just a small part into this investigation in finding who's the owner of the neglected animal.

54:48-54

I haven't seen a dog like that. It looked like one of those dogs that are in and out I the pound

Of the nearly 2000 cases of animal cruelty -- Lee county animal services says over a thousand of the animals are left to fend for themselves.

48:53-59

You are responsible for it's care Thats why we have state statutes and we have a local ordinance

About 500 of the other cases listed as severe situations of abuse.

None of them -- Browns says are excusable.

47:57-48:02

Obviously we want to hold somebody responsible if they are responsible for his condition Return to index of stories...

The city has tried flushing its pipes multiple times to fix the problem, but residents say--it's not working.

SOT--6:06 it's very disconcerting that it took all of this effort and it took this length of time

Thompson says the public works department was aware of the problem two weeks ago, but city councilman eric olson says there was a communication break-down.

Council SOT--3:21 our council did not know anything about it.

After a WESH 2 News investigation aired, the council called an emergency meeting.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

ITS THE SUMMER OF 20-13 PEOPLE CANT FORGET.

Linda Meeder,

:09:29 it was brown noone wanted to go in it.

Al Durrett,

:19:45 last year was terrible.

NBC-2 UNCOVERED THIS WEEK- A MAJOR PROJECT DESIGNED TO PROTECT OUR

SHORELINES- -THE C 43 RESERVOIR WAS PUT ON HOLD.

THIS AFTER THE STATE RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT FUNDING THIS SUMMER.

TODAY WE FOUND OUT WHY.

Phil Flood, South Florida Water Management District Director

:05:21 We want to keep that area reserved so we can utilize it to pump

water out of the caloosahatchee river and store it to keep it out of

the estuary if need

THE LAND IN HENDRY COUNTY WHERE THE C-43 PROJECT IS BEING BUILT--

IS CURRENTLY BEING USED TO STORE THE WATER FROM THIS RAINY SEASON--

SO IT DOESNT DAMAGE OUR BEACHES.

well that's good, that's good to know.

THE PROJECT WHICH WAS SUPPOSE TO START IN OCTOBER-WILL NOW HAVE TO

WAIT TIL FEBRUARY- FOR THE LAND TO TRY OUT.

downside we have to wait to do anything

SOME SAY ITS JUST THE SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE.

:13:13 they are always talking, they are always talking

OTHERS UNDERSTAND--

:18;16 goverment projects take longer

DURRETT DOESNT SEE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE PROJECT BEING PUSHED BACK SLIGHTLY-

AS LONG AS THE PEOPLE IN POWER KEEP FIGHTING THE FIGHT.

:19:58 there needs to be the people that go out there that are still

beating the drum to go out there and have this project completed asap-

but i dont think that is going to happen asap, so the people the

people that are in charge of keeping the government going at a steady

pace, hats off to them and keep doing it.
