PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS THE FIRST OF MANY AIRSTRIKES AGAINST ISIS FIGHTERS IN IRAQ WERE SUCCESSFUL.

HUMANITARIAN DROPS TO REFUGEES IN NORTHERN IRAQ ARE ALSO UNDERWAY.

US IRAQ LATEST-PKG

FOR A SECOND DAY. U-S WAR PLANES. AND A PREDATOR DRONE LAUNCHED AIRSTRIKES AGAINST

REBEL FIGHTERS IN NORTHERN IRAQ.

"So far, these strikes have successfully destroyed arms and equipment that ISIL terrorists could have used against Erbil."

THE AIRSTRIKES ARE ALSO AIMED AT PROTECTING THE TENS OF THOUSANDS YAZIDI RELIGIOUS REFUGEES FORCED TO FLEE THE FIGHTING.

NOW SURROUNDED BY MILITANTS IN THE SINJAR MOUNTAIN RANGE.

"American aircraft are positioned to strike ISIL terrorists around the mountain to help forces in Iraq break the siege and rescue those who are trapped there."

PART OF THE MISSION. DELIVERING TONS OF FOOD AND THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF WATER TO THE STARVING REFUGEES.

BUT ANALYSTS SAY THESE STRIKES MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO BEAT BACK ISIS FIGHTERS.

WHO SINCE JANUARY. HAVE TAKEN OVER A WIDE SWATH OF IRAQ AND SYRIA. AND RECENTLY LAUNCHED ATTACKS AGAINST NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES.

"Fundamentally this is not going to change the tide in Iraq. It will take much more on the part of the Iraqis and likely the US to do that and push Isis back."

BUT PRESIDENT OBAMA INSISTS THAT MORE. WILL NOT INCLUDE U-S TROOPS ON THE GROUND.

"Ultimately, only Iraqis can ensure the security and stability of Iraq. The United States can't do it for them, but we can and will be partners in that effort."

AN EFFORT. THAT SOME FEAR MAY TURN A LIMITED AIR CAMPAIGN. INTO A LONG TERM MILITARY COMMITMENT.

DAN SCHENEMAN. NBC NEWS. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN

NEW! Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

QUIET WEATHER TONIGHT, HOT TEMPS TOMORROW

Quiet conditions will continue to prevail across Southwest Florida overnight with low temperatures retreating to the mid and upper 70s into early Sunday morning.

On Sunday, our rain prospects will be lower than what is considered typical for early August in Southwest Florida.

The morning should see a mix of sun and clouds, and though a passing shower or isolated downpour may develop during the morning and early afternoon along the coastline from the Gulf of Mexico, afternoon rain and thunderstorm chances should be driven mainly well east of communities like Lehigh Acres and Golden Gate.

With less rainfall than what is typical for our region this time of year, temperatures have a better chance of heating up near 91 at Naples, 94 at Fort Myers and 93 at Punta Gorda. Inland areas toward LaBelle and Immokalee may see highs top out closer to 95 degrees.

A similar weather pattern lingers in the region on Monday with highs again near 94 degrees.

A higher chance for some late afternoon and early evening showers and storms returns to the region in more widespread coverage by Tuesday and Wednesday.

TROPICAL UDPATE

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea at this time. No storms are forecast to develop within the next 48 hours as well.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
