GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE, GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH US.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M CLIFTON FRENCH.

LET'S HEAD STRAIGHT TO NBC2'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING.

HE'S TRACKING YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

After a very busy weather week across Southwest Florida, our rain chance will trend lower as we go through our weekend.

With that said, we'll still have some rain around in spots, but the overall coverage should be much lower.

Those of us closer to the coast will see the potential for some passing downpours through our Saturday morning, and some of these cells may contain some lightning as well.

As we progress through the early to mid afternoon, the highest rain chances will shift away from the coast and toward our inland areas.

Outside of a passing storm, our sky will stay partly cloudy to mostly sunny with temperatures warming into the low to mid 90s.

Some drier air will help reduce rain chances from Sunday into early next week, but we'll still keep the door open for some isolated storms during the heat of the day.

Since our weather will be trending drier, temperatures will be a touch higher with highs pushing into the mid 90s for most of the week.

Tropical Update

It is still very quiet in the open waters of the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean as we move into the weekend. The atmosphere across the tropics is not very conducive for development right now.

No major activity is expected over the next five days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

NBC2'S LAURA ROBERTS UNCOVERED WHAT'S NEXT FOR FORT MYERS BEACH'S TOP O' MAST. Return to index of stories...

FMB RENOVATION CONTROVERSY-trxPKG

No more rum-runner fueled beach parties, at least not for this establishment.

The old Top O'Mast Bar on Fort Myers Beach's Time Square is closed for renovations - just check this sign outside their door.

Marsha Barber

Former Top O' Mast customer

18:26 18:31

we're kind of like bummed that it's closed, that's where I danced!

and if you take one look inside - it's a mess - because a complete renovation is in the works.

it's clear when it re-opens, you likely won't even recognize the 40-year old bar.

Developer Joe Orlandini bought the property last week, promptly closed it down, and quickly started turning Top O' Mast into something totally new.

Joe Orlandini

Developer

57:48

the property itself was ran as a bar and somewhat as a night club for a long time:54

BUTT TO

58:00 so we want to go in the direction of where Times Square has changed cause everything's changed around it except this

People on the island may know Orlandini from his residential real estate properties -

which caused some controversy over elevated pools not meeting city code.

And people may know Top O' Mast because of its previous owner Steve Strauss -

who was found guilty of illegally serving alcohol on the sand.

But now Orlandini wants to be known as the guy who transformed that bar into a family-friendly restaurant.

Orlandini

57:31 57:35

it is a family oriented place, the island's a family island

Even so, there are some, who'd like to keep a few adult- only places on the island.

Lehmann

Fort Myers

16:34 there's plenty of beach for kids there's plenty of activities for kids:38 and my personal opinion is keep it a little more grown up:42

Orlandini hopes to attract both, adults and kids - so everyone can enjoy the island-themed beach restaurant.

SWFL WATER QUALITY-trxPKG

THE SUMMER OF 20-14 IS ALMOST OVER ON FORT MYERS BEACH-

ITS THE SUMMER OF 20-13 PEOPLE CANT FORGET.

Linda Meeder,

:09:29 it was brown noone wanted to go in it.

Al Durrett,

:19:45 last year was terrible.

NBC-2 UNCOVERED THIS WEEK- A MAJOR PROJECT DESIGNED TO PROTECT OUR

SHORELINES- -THE C 43 RESERVOIR WAS PUT ON HOLD.

THIS AFTER THE STATE RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT FUNDING THIS SUMMER.

TODAY WE FOUND OUT WHY.

Phil Flood, South Florida Water Management District Director

:05:21 We want to keep that area reserved so we can utilize it to pump

water out of the caloosahatchee river and store it to keep it out of

the estuary if need

THE LAND IN HENDRY COUNTY WHERE THE C-43 PROJECT IS BEING BUILT--

IS CURRENTLY BEING USED TO STORE THE WATER FROM THIS RAINY SEASON--

SO IT DOESNT DAMAGE OUR BEACHES.

well that's good, that's good to know.

THE PROJECT WHICH WAS SUPPOSE TO START IN OCTOBER-WILL NOW HAVE TO

WAIT TIL FEBRUARY- FOR THE LAND TO TRY OUT.

downside we have to wait to do anything

SOME SAY ITS JUST THE SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE.

:13:13 they are always talking, they are always talking

OTHERS UNDERSTAND--

:18;16 goverment projects take longer

DURRETT DOESNT SEE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE PROJECT BEING PUSHED BACK SLIGHTLY-

AS LONG AS THE PEOPLE IN POWER KEEP FIGHTING THE FIGHT.

:19:58 there needs to be the people that go out there that are still

beating the drum to go out there and have this project completed asap-

but i dont think that is going to happen asap, so the people the

people that are in charge of keeping the government going at a steady

pace, hats off to them and keep doing it.

6:42 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

"I felt the pressure on my left shoulder as if there was a hand on it giving me comfort and assurance."

JOE GERACI STILL GETS CHOKED UP YEARS AFTER HIS WIFE'S AMAZING BATTLE WITH BREAST CANCER. AS A HUSBAND AND CAREGIVER, GERACI WAS MOVED TO WRITE A BOOK ON THEIR EXPERIENCE AS A GUIDE FOR OTHERS.

"you're thrust into that position and all of a sudden it's like what do I do."

SO HE WROTE A BOOK CALLED AMAZING!

HE WROTE IT OUT OF FRUSTRATION, OUT OF HURT, AND LOVE FOR HIS WIFE!

"in talking to other men whose wives had breast cancer, we literally could finish each others sentences."

AS IF BREAST CANCER WASN'T ENOUGH TO HANDLE.

AN ECHO-CARDIOGRAM WAS DONE AND SHE LEARNED THERE WAS ANOTHER HEALTH ISSUE.

"I had congestive heart failure."

"when she developed congestive heart failure and was about 2-heartbeats away from a pine box, the cardiologist handed me a book all on congestive heart failure first page, number one cause congestive heart failure chemotherapy."

AND THAT SPARKED THE URGE TO WRITE AMAZING.

"it just drives me crazy. they knew that, they know that, but they're not telling the people that and that's why that book is there."

IT'S WRITTEN FROM THE CAREGIVER'S PERSPECTIVE.

"they said you need to do this and that's what we did and it came back to bite us in the butt."

JOE IS PASSIONATE WHEN HE SAYS WOMEN NEED TO KNOW THERE ARE OPTIONS AND THE REALITIES ASSOCIATED WITH TREATMENTS FOR BREAST CANCER.

"he's a great caregiver and it weren't for him I probably wouldn't still be here."

"she's my little Timex. she's taken a licking' but she keeps on ticking'.
