ONE DAY AFTER THE U-S MILITARY UNLEASHED ITS FIRST AIRSTRIKES AGAINST ISIS MILITANTS IN NORTHERN IRAQ.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SPOKE TO THE NATION.

"So far, these strikes have successfully destroyed arms and equipment that ISIL terrorists could have used against Erbil."

THE AIRSTRIKES ARE ALSO AIMED AT SUPPORTING KURDISH PESHMERGA FIGHTERS. OVERRUN BY ISIS IN JUST THE PAST WEEK.

AND BRINGING HUMANITARIAN AID TO TENS OF THOUSANDS RELIGIOUS REFUGEES FORCED TO FLEE THE FIGHTING. NOW TRAPPED ON A MOUNTAIN TOP.

"American forces have so far conducted two successful airdrops -- delivering thousands of meals and gallons of water to these desperate men, women and children."

BUT CRITICS SAY THESE EFFORTS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO BEAT BACK ISIS FIGHTERS.

WHO SINCE JANUARY. HAVE OVERTAKEN A WIDE SWATH OF IRAQ AND SYRIA. AND RECENTLY LAUNCHED ATTACKS AGAINST NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES

"Isis is a threat to Lebanon, There have already been confrontations there / It poses a major threat to Jordan. The strategy has to be to destroy ISIS itself."

BUT PRESIDENT OBAMA INSISTS THIS INTERVENTION WILL NOT LEAD TO U-S BOOTS BACK ON THE GROUND IN IRAQ.

"We can conduct airstrikes, but ultimately there's not going to be an American military solution to this problem."

IT'S A SOLUTION SOME FEAR MAY TURN A LIMITED AIR CAMPAIGN. INTO ANOTHER LONG TERM MILITARY COMMITMENT.

FORECAST-WXWALL

QUIET WEATHER TONIGHT, HOT TEMPS TOMORROW

Generally quiet conditions are expected aross Southwest Florida tonight with low temperatures retreating to the mid and upper 70s into early Sunday morning.

Rain chances look quite isolated tonight, with only a slight shower chance existing mainly for areas east of Interstate 75.

On Sunday, our rain prospects will be lower than what is considered typical for early August in Southwest Florida.

The morning should see a mix of sun and clouds, and though a passing shower or isolated downpour may develop during the mid-day hours, afternoon rain and thunderstorm chances should be driven mainly east of communities like Lehigh Acres and Golden Gate.

With less rainfall than what is typical for our region this time of year, temperatures have a better chance of heating up near 91 at Naples, 94 at Fort Myers and 93 at Punta Gorda. Inland areas toward LaBelle and Immokalee may see highs top out closer to 95 degrees.

A similar weather pattern lingers in the region on Monday with highs again near 94 degrees.

A higher chance for some late afternoon and early evening showers and storms returns to the region in more widespread coverage by Tuesday and Wednesday.

TROPICAL UDPATE

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea at this time. No storms are forecast to develop within the next 48 hours as well.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
