GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO N-B-C 2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

WE WILL GET TO THE NEWS OF THE DAY IN JUST A MINUTE, BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING JOINS US TO TELL US HOW THE DAY IS SHAPIGN UP AND WHEN WE CAN EXPECT RAIN TODAY. Return to index of stories...

TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CENTER

With that said, we'll still have some rain around in spots, but the overall coverage should be much lower.

Those of us closer to the coast will see the potential for some passing downpours through our Saturday morning, and some of these cells may contain some lightning as well.

As we progress through the early to mid afternoon, the highest rain chances will shift away from the coast and toward our inland areas.

Outside of a passing storm, our sky will stay partly cloudy to mostly sunny with temperatures warming into the low to mid 90s.

Some drier air will help reduce rain chances from Sunday into early next week, but we'll still keep the door open for some isolated storms during the heat of the day.

Since our weather will be trending drier, temperatures will be a touch higher with highs pushing into the mid 90s for most of the week.

Tropical Update

It is still very quiet in the open waters of the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean as we move into the weekend. The atmosphere across the tropics is not very conducive for development right now.

No major activity is expected over the next five days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE DECIDING ON WHETHER TO SELL THEIR HOMES.

SELLERS ARE EITHER UNDERWATER ON THEIR MORTGAGES OR ARE WAITING FOR PRICES TO GO HIGHER.

BUT SOMETHING ELSE IS ADDING TO THE LACK OF LISTINGS.

DIANA OLICK UNCOVERS A NEW TREND.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST COMPLAINTS IN THE HOUSING MARKET TODAY IS THAT THERE IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH OUT THERE TO BUY. SELLERS ARE EITHER UNDERWATER ON THEIR MORTGAGES OR ARE WAITING FOR PRICES TO GO HIGHER. BUT SOMETHING ELSE IS ADDING TO THE LACK OF LISTINGS. OUR REAL ESTATE CORRESPONDENT DIANA OLICK EXPLAINS.

Increasing numbers of homeowners underwater on their mortgages are choosing torent their homes out and buy new homes elsewhere. CNBC's Diana Olick reports. Return to index of stories...

HOMEOWNER LANDLORDS-PKG

NAT SOUND AROUND THE HOUSE

SHELLY AND KEON BURLEY ARE LOVING THEIR NEW HOME IN SUBURBAN BALTIMORE.

IT IS FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF THEIR ---

LAST HOME IN THE HEART OF THE CITY -- THE HOME THEY ARE NOW RENTING OUT.

"It really wasn't worth it to take that $30K hit when we could get someone to rent the property, have them pay down the mortgage."

30 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THAT'S HOW FAR UNDERWATER THEY WERE ON THE DOWNTOWN HOME'S MORTGAGE. RATHER THAN TAKE THE HIT, THEY TOOK THE RENT -- LIKE SO MANY OTHERS ARE DOING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

"Now, as people are starting to move, and to sell, individuals, they're also turning into landlords by choice. And that is definitely having a dent in the inventory numbers."

THE SUPPLY OF HOMES FOR SALE IS FINALLY STARTING TO RISE, BUT IT IS STILL TIGHT, WHICH IS PUSHING HOME PRICES HIGHER. RENTS ARE ALSO RISING, AND THAT WAS ENOUGH TO CONVINCE THE BURLEYS THAT BEING LANDLORDS IS WORTH IT.

I put it on Craig's list and had people responding to the ad instantly.

"I was probably more stressed than my wife."

THREE MONTHS LATER, THEY AGREE IT WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE, EVEN AFTER PUTTING 20% DOWN ON THE NEW HOUSE AND CARRYING TWO MORTGAGES.

"We just cut out all the non-essentials and we were able to stockpile the down payment quicker so we could move out and move to this lovely home."

THE BALLENTINES KEPT THEIR OLD HOME BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDERWATER.

BUT OTHERS ARE CHOOSING TO BECOME LANDLORDS FOR THE OPPOSITE REASON. THEY HAVE GAINED SO MUCH EQUITY IN THEIR HOMES RECENTLY THAT THEY CAN USE THAT TO BUY THE NEW HOME AND STILL EARN RENTAL INCOME ON TOP OF THAT.

"Some of them are all cash. Our agents are seeing people come through their door with the cash in hand to buy that next place. A lot of them obviously don't need that equity in their former home or they're able to tap some of it out and then use it to buy the next place." Return to index of stories...

No more rum-runner fueled beach parties, at least not for this establishment.

The old Top O'Mast Bar on Fort Myers Beach's Time Square is closed for renovations - just check this sign outside their door.

Marsha Barber

Former Top O' Mast customer

18:26 18:31

we're kind of like bummed that it's closed, that's where I danced!

and if you take one look inside - it's a mess - because a complete renovation is in the works.

it's clear when it re-opens, you likely won't even recognize the 40-year old bar.

Developer Joe Orlandini bought the property last week, promptly closed it down, and quickly started turning Top O' Mast into something totally new.

Joe Orlandini

Developer

57:48

the property itself was ran as a bar and somewhat as a night club for a long time:54

BUTT TO

58:00 so we want to go in the direction of where Times Square has changed cause everything's changed around it except this

People on the island may know Orlandini from his residential real estate properties -

which caused some controversy over elevated pools not meeting city code.

And people may know Top O' Mast because of its previous owner Steve Strauss -

who was found guilty of illegally serving alcohol on the sand.

But now Orlandini wants to be known as the guy who transformed that bar into a family-friendly restaurant.

Orlandini

57:31 57:35

it is a family oriented place, the island's a family island

Even so, there are some, who'd like to keep a few adult- only places on the island.

Lehmann

Fort Myers

16:34 there's plenty of beach for kids there's plenty of activities for kids:38 and my personal opinion is keep it a little more grown up:42

Orlandini hopes to attract both, adults and kids - so everyone can enjoy the island-themed beach restaurant.

FORECAST-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.After a very busy weather week across Southwest Florida, our rain chance will trend lower as we go through our weekend.

Return to index of stories...

HEART DISEASE REMAINS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER IN THIS COUNTRY.

HEALTH MATTERS: STENTS SAVE LIVES-PKG

PKG:

UNLIKE BYPASS SURGERY, PLACEMENT OF A HEART STENT IS CONSIDERED

MINIMALLY INVASIVE- IT DOESN'T INVOLVE MAJOR INCISIONS AND CAN

BE PERFORMED WITH LOCAL ANESTHESIA OR UNDER MILD SEDATION.

ACCORDING TO THE CDC ALMOST HALF-MILLION AMERICANS UNDERGO THE

PROCEDURE- EACH YEAR.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:10: Yes, it's a very common procedure that can be extremely useful in certain

circumstances. It can be done either through an artery in the leg or an artery in the

wrist- the radial artery.

CHANCES ARE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS HAD-OR WILL HAVE ONE.

USED TO OPEN BLOCKAGES IN THE ARTERIES THAT LEAD TO THE HEART..

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:11 It almost looks like the little spring.

.STENTS ARE INSERTED THROUGH A CATHETER, ONCE AN ANGIOPLASTY

HAS CLEARED THE WAY.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:05 In the setting of a heart attack this is unbelievably effective therapy that is life

saving and muscle saving. So it can actually prevent you from dying, it can prevent you

from having disability.

QUICKLY OPENING THE ARTERY IS THE FASTEST WAY TO STOP A HEART

ATTACK. BUT MANY TIMES A STENT IS PUT IN TO ALLEVIATE ONGOING

SYMPTOMS.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:26 People who are having severe angina, that is discomfort brought on by narrowing

or blockage that can't be treated or prevented with medication, we know that stenting

can be tremendously helpful.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

While stenting revolutionized the treatment of cardiovascular conditions- some question

whether it's overused. Doctors find it is a constant balancing act.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:26 In the past when we thought narrowing meant that one had to have a stent. We

now realize that in a stable patient, medical therapy is a reasonable alternative.

NEW GENERATIONS INCLUDE DRUG ELUTING STENTS MEANT TO PREVENT

FUTURE CLOTTING AND ABSORBABLE STENTS THAT DISAPPEAR AFTER USE.

GIVEN ALL OF THESE BENEFITS, CARDIAC STENTS HAVE STAYING POWER.
