HELLO-1SH-PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

TODAY IS SUNDAY, AUGUST TENTH, THANKS FOR JOINING US.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

Rain chances will take a backseat to the heat starting today as a layer of drier air greatly reduces the number of showers and storms in our forecast.

Sunshine will be plentiful today from the morning and into the afternoon, resulting in a rapid rise in temperatures with highs projected to reach the mid 90s.

Some of our inland communities, where the sea breeze arrives later in the day, may even get as warm as the upper 90s, so be sure to drink plenty of water and apply the sunscreen if you're going to be spending much time outdoors.

Despite the dramatic drop in rain chances today, we'll still have a few isolated storms forming through the afternoon, but most of these will end up over the interior part of the peninsula.

Expect a mostly clear sky this evening and tonight, which should set the stage for prime viewing of tonight's supermoon; by the way, if you snap any good pictures of tonight's full moon, be sure to share them on our NBC 2 facebook page!

As we head into the upcoming week, the forecast will stay relatively dry with ample heat and sunshine. Afternoon highs will top out in the mid 90s, and overnight lows will only cool into the mid to upper 70s.

Rain chances will be a touch higher by Thursday, but the rain coverage should only be in the "isolated" category.

Tropical Update

THE ANKLE- IT'S BEEN REFERRED TO AS THE LAST FRONTIER IN JOINT

REPLACEMENT. FOR DECADES SURGEONS HAVE TRIED TO MATCH THE

SUCCESS OF ARTIFICIAL KNEES AND HIPS BUT IT HASN'T BEEN EASY.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:28 Even with more modern advances with joint replacement in the ankle we still

haven't quite achieved the stability of a knee replacement so there are some very select

cases we can consider doing an ankle replacement on.

FOR MOST, THE GO-TO OPERATION REMAINS THE ANKLE FUSION.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:28 Especially those who want to be very active and very hard on that joint afterwards.

THERE ARE PROS AND CONS TO EACH OPTION. AN ANKLE REPLACEMENT

PROVIDES MORE FLEXIBILITY. A FUSION OFFERS LONG-TERM STABILITY.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

6:11 Long term data shows you can get 20-25 year longevity out of an ankle fusion and

it does quite well with really minimal, other associated problems.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

An ankle fusion consists of removing the ankle joint, then using metal hardware to

compress the ends and allow the bones to grow together. Lost in the process is some

degrees of motion. Patients will also say goodbye to the pain of bone rubbing on bone.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

1:05 When they're getting to the point of needing a fusion to begin with, they have lost

so much of their motion. They may have a few degrees left, but its mostly painful motion

and what I tell them is I'm going to take away the pain. And maybe stiffen the joint a

little bit more.

FUSION SURGERY IS NOW PERFORMED LESS INVASIVELY THROUGH SMALL

OPENINGS. THE PROCEDURE YIELDING FEW COMPLICATIONS AND YEARS

A FUNDRAISER THAT BENEFITS NEEDY CHILDREN IN THE COUNTY.

FOR ONE WEEK, THERE WILL BE A SET OF DONATION BOXES AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS.

YOU'RE ASKED TO BRING A BRAND NEW PAIR OF SOCKS AND UNDERWAIR FOR BOYS AND GIRLS.

MONETARY DONATIONS ARE ALSO ACCEPTED TO HELP BUY BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES.

Annual Undy Sunday event provides undergarments to needy school children

Collier County- It may be difficult to believe that hundreds of school children in the community lack basic underwear and socks. But according to personnel at the local public schools, the need exists.

"The Collier County school staff continue to report that many students do not have undergarments at the beginning of the school year," said Don Campbell, co chair of the annual Undy Sunday event. "Before Catholic Charities initiated this program, the school staff were assuming the responsibility of supplying the items," he said.

The 18th Annual Undy Sunday will happen in August to provide students living in poverty with the basic necessities to be ready for another school year. Needy children at 34 public elementary schools and five social service agencies in Collier County will benefit from the fundraiser. "We know the community will come together again this year to provide these young children with the items they require to be successful in school," Campbell said.

About 38 participating religious communities will set out donation boxes on Sunday, August 10 and Sunday, August 17. Donors will be asked to bring new socks and new underwear for boys and girls sizes four through 12. Monetary donations also are accepted to purchase backpacks and school supplies.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. volunteers will collect the items and distribute them to the schools and social service agencies. About 600,000 undergarments have been given to disadvantaged children in Collier County during the past 17 years though the annual Undy Sunday event.

"Last year we began working with Laces of Love who provide new shoes for needy children," Campbell said. "Through Undy Sunday, we gave them about 2,500 pairs of socks for distribution with their sneakers to low-income students at Collier County schools," he said. "We anticipate this partnership again this year."

Donation items also can be dropped off at the Catholic Charities office located at 2210 Santa Barbara Blvd. in Naples from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Fridays. For more information about the Undy Sunday event contact Catholic Charities in Collier County at 239-455-2655. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea at this time, and no tropical development is expected over the next few days. Return to index of stories...

MO: TEEN KILLED BY POLICE-PKG

We wasn't causing harm to nobody, we had no weapons on us at all.

DORIAN JOHNSON SAYS HE WAS WALKING HOME FROM A CONVENIENCE STORE WITH HIS FRIEND MIKE BROWN.THEY WERE WALKING ON THE STREET.WHEN A FERGUSON POLICE OFFICER.FROM HIS VEHICLE.TOLD THE BOYS TO GET OUT OF THE STREET.

JOHNSON SAYS THEY KEPT WALKING.CAUSING THE OFFICER TO CONFRONT THE BOYS.FIRST FROM HIS CAR.THEN GOT OUT OF THE CAR FIRING A SHOT. JOHNSON SAYS HIM AND BROWN WERE SCARED AND RAN AWAY FROM THE OFFICER.

He shot again and once my friend felt that shot he turned around and put his hands in the air and started to get down and the officer still approached with his weapon drawn and fired several more shots.

INSTANTLY.HUNDREDS GATHERED.ANGERED AND SADDENED BY WHAT THEY CALL A COMPLETE OVER REACTION BY THE OFFICER.

NOW A FAMILY IS DEMANDING ANSWERS.

You took my son away from me. You know how hard it was to keep in school to graduate? You know how many black men graduate? Not many, because you bring them down to this type of level, when they fell like they don't got nothing to live for anyway. They're going to try to take me out anyway.

THE CROWD BECAME MORE ANGERED.EVEN SOMEONE FIRING SHOTS.NO ONE WAS HURT.

MEANWHILE.BROWN'S BODY LAID IN THE STREET FOR HOURS.

The shots that were being fired were very close to the scene. We needed to make sure the crime scene was safe, so we could safely without conflict move everyone back far enough.

FERGUSON POLICE CHIEF TOM JACKSON SAYS THE ST. LOUIS COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT IS HANDLING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE OFFICER SHOOTING.

AND SAYS AS STANDARD PROCEDURE.THE OFFICER HAS BEEN PUT ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE.

We do want this investigated fully and that's why we asked for the outside help to do that. Our main mission is to protect the community that's why we're out here.
