FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LIMITED RAIN CHANCES TODAY

Even though there is still plenty of humidity in the lower levels of the atmosphere, making it feel hotter than the temperatures actually are, the mid and upper levels of our atmosphere are relatively drier.

This wedge of relatively drier air will greatly limit our rain chances today and the next couple of days. Usually we are tracking lots of afternoon storm activity this time of year, so this is not your typical Southwest Florida weather.

Winds will be coming in from the south-southwest and could give us just a very stray shower near the coast this morning, especially on the southern end of the area. Then in the afternoon, there will be just a few isolated storms. Those storms will be aimed toward the inland areas. That pattern will continue for tomorrow, too.

With less rain on the radar, temperatures should again be able to soar this afternoon reaching to 94 for the official high at Page Field in Fort Myers.

Beaches will be just a couple of degrees cooler and inland areas a degree or 2 hotter. We will keep highs in the lower 90s through the week and rain chances will start to increase later in the week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

No tropical cyclones are active or expected to develop in the next 48 hours in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea.

However, a tropical wave just off the coast of Africa will be monitored closely this week for some possible development. Forecast models show this disturbance moving due westward across the Atlantic this week.

The National Hurricane Center has given this area a 30 percent chance of development in the next five days. As always, we will be tracking it and will keep you updated on-air and online. Return to index of stories...

FOOTBALL SEASON IS UPON US AND EXPERTS NOW SAY PLAYERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS WHEN HIT ON TOP OF THE HEAD.

FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE FIRED UP.

"One more time. whose house?" "OUR HOUSE!!!!"

WHILE HARD HITS AND TOUGH TACKLES ARE PART OF THE GAME. MANY COACHES AND ATHLETIC TRAINERS ARE TRYING TO DRILL ONE THOUGHT INTO THE MINDS OF YOUNG ATHLETES:

"Keep your head up."

U-S-A FOOTBALL IS THE SPORT'S NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY FOR YOUTH FOOTBALL AND IS TIED TO THE N-F-L.

THE GROUP TEACHES PLAYERS TO TACKLE AN OPPONENT BY WRAPPING THEIR ARMS AROUND THEM. RATHER THAN RAMMING THEM WITH THEIR HEADS. THE GOAL OF THE "HEADS UP" PROGRAM IS TO REDUCE HEAD INJURIES AND MAKE THE SPORT SAFER.

"It's a little too soon to tell, but I think anecdotally, it makes a lot of sense to coach athletes to tackle with their heads up and not use their head as a weapon."

THERE'S NO DATA YET ON WHETHER "HEADS UP" DOES, IN FACT, REDUCE HEAD INJURIES. BUT NEW RESEARCH ON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS GIVES THE THEORY CREDIBILITY.

CONCUSSIONS SUSTAINED FROM BLOWS TO THE TOP OF THE HEAD WERE MORE LIKELY TO RESULT IN A LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS.

"We actually found a large majority of those individuals who were sustaining the concussions from top of the head impacts were actually having their heads down at the time of impact."

BLACKING OUT AFTER A BLOW TO THE HEAD IS RARE -- BUT EXPERTS SAY THERE'S EVIDENCE THOSE HITS MEAN TOUGHER AND LONGER RECOVERIES.

"Only about 2 and a half percent of individuals will have a recovery that lasts longer than 45 days, but if you have loss of consciousness, then your risk of that prolonged recovery goes up by about 4-fold."

DATA ON "HEADS UP" PROGRAMS WILL BE COLLECTED THROUGH THE 2014 SEASON.

SO CALLED 'SMART PILLS' ARE GOING PLACES DOCTORS COULD BARELY ACCESS.

ON A FANTASTIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE GI TRACT, THE TINY PILL CAM HAS A ONE-WAY TICKET OUT. BUT IT IS GIVING DOCTORS AN INSIDE VIEW OF THE SMALL INTESTINE. PART OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM THAT WAS A NO-MAN'S LAND.

DR. MICHAEL BAYS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

:43 In between the stomach and the colon is about fifteen feet of bowel. And so there's lots of stuff that can go on in that part of the intestine that we can't see with our endoscopes.

INSTEAD OF DELIVERING MEDICINE, THE PILL CAM SENDS SIGNALS TO AN EXTERIOR RECORDER. TWO IMAGES PER SECOND OVER AN EIGHT HOUR SPAN, RESULTING IN ABOUT 57-THOUSAND PICTURES.

DR. MICHAEL BAYS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

2:12 Prior to this we had one of two options really. One is some sort of an X-ray and that would be a CAT scan and or a barium enema.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

A non-surgical super sleuth, it's used when doctors need help solving medical mysteries. It forces the small intestine to give up its secrets. But the pill cam is not for everyone.

DR. MICHAEL BAYS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

3:15 The first indication would be that the patient is bleeding from their intestinal tract and we can't find it. We'll look in the stomach, we look in the colon, we don't see anything. So we assume that it, it's somewhere in, in the middle. 4:00 The second would be if we are concerned about Crohn's Disease.

PATIENTS ARE OUTFITTED IN THE MORNING….

NICOLE FINDLEY/MEDICAL ASSISTANT

RUNS:

2:50 This first one is our eight-lead sensory belt. Once it's connected to the patient it connects to the recorder. 3:35 And then this is a sensory belt, where instead of doing that, this just goes around them.

By the time they swallow the dime-size capsule, everything is hooked up and ready to go.

NICOLE FINDLEY/MEDICAL ASSISTANT

RUNS:

1:12 They can do whatever they'd like, as long as they're up and moving around, because it's gravity-fed.

IN THE AFTERNOON THE GEAR IS REMOVED- THE PILL CAM WILL PASS NATURALLY. THIS LESS INVASIVE APPROACH MAY MAKE A DIFFICULT DIAGNOSIS EASIER TO SWALLOW. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

WEB ROOMING-PKG

VIDEO MAY HAVE KILLED THE RADIO STAR, BUT THE WEB HASN'T KILLED THE RETAIL STORE.IN FACT RECENT SURVEYS INDICATE, IT MAY BE HELPING.

"SHOW-ROOMING" -- CONSUMERS BROWSING IN-STORE, BUT BUYING ONLINE -- HAS DRIVEN RETAILERS LIKE BEST BUY AND TARGET TO PRICE MATCH BOTH PHYSICAL AND ONLINE COMPETITORS.

AND NOW, THE INITIATIVE MAY BE TURNING THE TREND TO "WEBROOMING" INSTEAD -- SHOPPERS BROWSING ONLINE, BUT BUYING IN-STORE.

ACCORDING TO SURVEYS FROM ACCENTURE AND THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF SHOPPING CENTERS, AROUND THREE-QUARTERS OF BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPERS PLAN TO RESEARCH PRODUCTS ONLINE FIRST, BUT WILL STILL BUY GOODS IN PHYSICAL STORES.

MAKING SURE THE ITEM IS IN-STOCK, SEEING AND TOUCHING THE PRODUCT, AND AVOIDING SHIPPING COSTS ARE AMONG THE TOP REASONS WHY CONSUMERS ARE WEB-ROOMING.

"Even if you're a retailer selling 5, 10, 15, 20 percent of your goods online, the converse of that is 80, 85, 90, 95% of goods are still being sold in store. So the store is very important and what we're seeing then is online, via the webrooming, is having a very big influence on the in store purchases. So you can't think about store and online as separate you have to think about how they influence each other"

The National Retail Federation forecasts the average family with children enrolled in grades K through 12 will spend $669, up 5% from last year. The average back-to-school spending for a college student is expected to rise 10% to $916. But the spending increase is more due to the fact that goods are pricier now and not necessarily about shoppers buying more.

STILL, FOR STORES AND ECOMMERCE ALIKE, THE FACT CONSUMERS ARE SPENDING IS WELCOME NEWS HEADING INTO THE ALL-IMPORTANT SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR.

FOR THE 24 PASSENGERS ON BOARD THE JOKER'S JINX, THIS WASN'T THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE THEY WERE EXPECTING. AS THEIR SIX CAR TRAIN CAME TO A HALT ON THE TRACK AT 2PM SUNDAY LEAVING THEM STRANDED 75 FEET IN THE AIR.

MARYLAND FIRE AND EMERGENCY CREWS QUICKLY RESPONDED BRINGING IN TRUCKS WITH TOWER LADDERS TOPPED BY SAFETY BUCKETS AS FIREFIGHTERS SCALED THE TRACK GIVING WATER AND UMBRELLAS TO PASSENGERS.

SOT

"we had to make our way to the back of the car. first thing to do was to keep the car from moving back and forth "

THE RESCUE OPERATION BEGAN JUST AFTER 5PM. ONE BY ONE, FIREFIGHTERS STRAPPED RIDERS INTO SAFETY HARNESSES CAREFULLY GUIDING THEM TO THE RESCUE BUCKETS AND LOWERING THEM TO THE GROUND.

SOT

"everybody was cooperative. they just wanted to get off of there and they had no problem getting to the towers."

BY 7PM, ALL 24 PASSENGERS WERE ON THE GROUND SAFELY. THE QUESTION TODAY. WHY DID THE JOKER'S JINX SUDDENLY STOP?

IN A STATEMENT, SIX FLAGS SAID THE RIDE HAS A SOPHISTICATED COMPUTERIZED SAFETY SYSTEM THAT CAN CAUSE SUCH RIDE STOPPAGES BUT WE ARE NOT YET SURE WHAT CAUSED THE STOPPAGE, THE RIDE PERFORMED AS IT IS DESIGNED TO. Return to index of stories...
