5:12 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Full Forecast

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT, HUMID AND MAINLY DRY

Even though there is still plenty of humidity in the lower levels of the atmosphere, making it feel hotter than the temperatures actually are, the mid and upper levels of our atmosphere are relatively drier. That relatively drier air will greatly limit our rain chances today and the next couple of days. Usually we are tracking lots of afternoon storm activity this time of year, so this is not your typical Southwest Florida weather.

Winds will be coming in from the south-southwest and could give us just a very stray shower near the coast this morning, especially on the southern end of the area. Then in the afternoon, there will be just a few isolated storms. Those storms will be aimed toward the inland areas. That pattern will continue for tomorrow, too.

With less rain on the radar, temperatures should again be able to soar this afternoon reaching to 94 for the official high at Page Field in Fort Myers. Beaches will be just a couple of degrees cooler and inland areas a degree or 2 hotter. We will keep highs in the lower 90s through the week and rain chances will start to increase later in the week.

TROPICAL UPDATE

No tropical cyclones are active or expected to develop in the next 48 hours in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea.

However, a tropical wave just off the coast of Africa will be monitored closely this week for some possible development. Forecast models show this disturbance moving due westward across the Atlantic this week.

The National Hurricane Center has given this area a 30% chance of development in the next five days. As always, we will be tracking it and will keep you updated on-air and online. Return to index of stories...

THREE-TIME NASCAR CHAMPION TONY STEWART PULLED OUT OF SUNDAY'S CHEEZ-IT 3-55 NASCAR RACE.

LAST NIGHT THE DRIVER HIT AND KILLED KEVIN WARD JR. WHILE COMPETING IN A 25-LAP DIRT-TRACK RACE AT CANANDAIGUA MOTORSPORTS PARK IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.

TONY STEWART'S CAR COMES CLOSE TO WARD, AND APPEARS TO HIT HIM.

"The operator of the car that was struck was transported to Thompson hospital in Canandaigua by ambulance.

At the hospital the operator was pronounced dead on arrival."

TONY STEWART RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT VIA NASCAR'S TWITTER ACCOUNT:

"THERE AREN'T WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE SADNESS I FEEL ABOUT THE ACCIDENT THAT TOOK THE LIFE OF KEVIN WARD JR.

IT'S A VERY EMOTIONAL TIME FOR ALL INVOLVED, AND IT IS THE REASON I'VE DECIDED NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN TODAY'S RACE AT WATKINS GLEN.

MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH HIS FAMILY, FREINDS AND EVERYONE AFFECTED BY THIS TRAGEDY."

POLICE SAY STEWART IS COOPERATING WITH THE INVESTIGATION, AND THAT NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED.

"I want to make it clear there are no criminal charges pending at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation."

5:30 WEATHER LEAD-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

COLILER COUNTY HAS KICKED OFF THEIR 18TH ANNUAL UNDY SUNDAY EVENT.

IT'S A FUNDRAISER THAT BENEFITS NEEDY CHILDREN IN THE COUNTY.

FOR ONE WEEK, THERE WILL BE A SET OF DONATION BOXES AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS.

YOU'RE ASKED TO BRING A BRAND NEW PAIR OF SOCKS AND UNDERWAIR FOR BOYS AND GIRLS.

MONETARY DONATIONS ARE ALSO ACCEPTED TO HELP BUY BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES.

FOR A LIST OF LOCATIONS JUST HEAD TO OUR WEBSITE NBC DASH TWO DOT COM.

Annual Undy Sunday event provides undergarments to needy school children

Collier County- It may be difficult to believe that hundreds of school children in the community lack basic underwear and socks. But according to personnel at the local public schools, the need exists.

"The Collier County school staff continue to report that many students do not have undergarments at the beginning of the school year," said Don Campbell, co chair of the annual Undy Sunday event. "Before Catholic Charities initiated this program, the school staff were assuming the responsibility of supplying the items," he said.

The 18th Annual Undy Sunday will happen in August to provide students living in poverty with the basic necessities to be ready for another school year. Needy children at 34 public elementary schools and five social service agencies in Collier County will benefit from the fundraiser. "We know the community will come together again this year to provide these young children with the items they require to be successful in school," Campbell said.

About 38 participating religious communities will set out donation boxes on Sunday, August 10 and Sunday, August 17. Donors will be asked to bring new socks and new underwear for boys and girls sizes four through 12. Monetary donations also are accepted to purchase backpacks and school supplies.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. volunteers will collect the items and distribute them to the schools and social service agencies. About 600,000 undergarments have been given to disadvantaged children in Collier County during the past 17 years though the annual Undy Sunday event.

"Last year we began working with Laces of Love who provide new shoes for needy children," Campbell said. "Through Undy Sunday, we gave them about 2,500 pairs of socks for distribution with their sneakers to low-income students at Collier County schools," he said. "We anticipate this partnership again this year."

Donation items also can be dropped off at the Catholic Charities office located at 2210 Santa Barbara Blvd. in Naples from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Fridays. For more information about the Undy Sunday event contact Catholic Charities in Collier County at 239-455-2655. Return to index of stories...
