TRAPPED IN HOMES - OR

OR TOLD TO EVACUATE -

NATS - WIND OR RAIN

THERE WAS NO TELLING HOW SAFE ANYONE WAS.

AS HURRICANE CHARLEY TOOK THAT INFAMOUS TURN TOWARD SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

just about the time Jim Reif made the call saying you need to take shelter it is coming up the Caloosahatchee. My dad was on the phone saying you need to go.

LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY CHIEF SCOTT TUTTLE WAS A LIUTENANT TEN YEARS AGO -

WATCHING FROM HOME AS THE HIGH WINDS AND RAIN POUND OUR COASTAL COMMUNITIES.

THE NEXT DAY HE HIT THE ROAD -

it became very real when I was going to work the next day and you could see National Guardsmen at all the intersections.

TUTTLE WAS TASKED WITH MOVING PATIENTS FROM POWERLESS NURSING HOMES AND SHELTERS

we're talking stretchers, o2 cylinders weighing 4 to 500 pounds.

AGENCIES LIKE LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY, ALONG WITH THE AMERICAN RED CROSS RUSHED IN TO HELP. HANDING OUT SUPPLIES AS THOUSANDS WENT WEEKS WITHOUT POWER FOLLOWING THE CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE -

I think it was so unique, that everyone here has a story.

THE NIGHT IT HIT.

BENJAMIN ABES WAS ON THE FRONT LINES.

MANNING A STORM SHELTER IN ALVA.

THEN MOVING NEW MOTHERS TO SAFETY FROM A DARKENED GULF COAST HOSPITAL.

loading those mother's and the newborns into buses and ambulances to get them someplace safe for the night is something I never experienced.

SPEAKING IN LEE COUNTY'S NEW EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER.

TUTTLE AND ABES LEAD LEE COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY NOW.

AND SAY THE AGENCY IS CONSTANTLY PREPARING FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER STORM.

we had lessons learned from that and are constantly evaluating plans

PLANS THEY HOPE THEY NEVER NEED TO USE.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Scattered coastal showers are making an appearance this Wednesday morning. A few of them have meandered their way onshore but the bulk of Southwest Florida is dry this morning.

Through the morning a few more showers make sneak onshore but most activity will be confined to the coastal communities. This afternoon expect a mix of mostly sunshine and fair weather cumulus clouds. Highs again will top out in the low 90s near the normal for this time of year.

After midday, sea breeze interaction will setup conditions for scattered showers along both sides of I-75. Only mentions chances for rain around 30% but any given area this afternoon can't be ruled out entirely. Return to index of stories...

THOSE PROTESTORS -- SEEKING JUSTICE FOR THE TEENAGER SHOT AND KILLED BY POLICE ON SATURDAY.

THE REVEREND AL SHARPTON JOINED THE PARENTS OF 18-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL BROWN AND OTHERS TUESDAY NIGHT AT ONE COMMUNITY FORUM IN FERGUSON.

Dorian Johnson: The weapon was already drawn on us, so we were more trying to get away out of the angle or aim of the weapon besides going towards the weapon because it was drawn at us already.

ANOTHER POINT OF CONTENTION - POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAME OF THE OFFICER WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER.

FERGUSON'S POLICE CHIEF SAYS THAT'S FOR THE OFFICER'S SAFETY. SPEAKING AT A MEETING ON TUESDAY, HE ADDRESSED THE COMMUNITY'S FRUSTRATIONS:

IRAQ MASS EXODUS-PKG

THE SCENE IS ALMOST BIBLICAL.

A MODERN DAY EXODUS.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TRUDGE ACROSS A RIVER TO ESCAPE A VIOLENT ENEMY.

MOST OF THEM, MOVE IN SILENCE.

ON OCCASION LOVED ONES SEPARATED BY WAR, TEARFULLY REUNITE.

EVERYONE IS FLEEING ISIS MILITANTS…WHO MANY HERE REFER TO AS DA'ASH.

"The bad thing. when Da'ash, you know terrorists, you know Da'ash, they attack us and our neighbors they are Arab. They are Arab. Since terrorists came they join them. And actually they kill us. You understand me?"

"People you know?"

"Yes people! Our neighbors!"

MANY REFUGEES ARE MEMBERS OF A KURDISH RELIGIOUS MINORITY KNOWN AS THE YEZIDIS.

ONE OF THEM… UNIVERSITY STUDENT JAMAL JAMIR. FOUND HIS MISSING COUSIN HERE.

"We lost each other! We lost each other! Thanks god, they arrived!"

LIKE MANY OF THE OTHER REFUGEES…JAMIR AND HIS FAMILY FLED TO SINJAR MOUNTAIN MORE THAN A WEEK AGO AFTER ISIS CAPTURED THEIR TOWN.

THEY SPENT DAYS…CAMPING ON THE MOUNTAIN…DESPERATELY WAITING FOR AIR DROPS OF FOOD AND WATER…

UNTIL THEY ESCAPED BY FOOT… ON A MARATHON 15-HOUR JOURNEY TO SYRIA….A JOURNEY THAT CLAIMED LIVES.

"On the way two of our brothers, small brothers. What we do? Not enough water and dusty. Actually I felt that I would die. We put on the way. They died."

"Your brothers?"

"Yeah."

"Two of your brothers died?"

"Yeah, baby."

A SENIOR KURDISH OFFICIAL HERE WANTS FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS AND ORGANIZATIONS, TO PREVENT GENOCIDE.

"Use your power, through the international law, to save the Yazidi from genocide."

BY THE TIME THESE REFUGEES REACH IRAQI KURDISTAN…

SOME ARE TOO SICK AND EXHAUSTED TO WALK.

THIS FAMILY WON'T GO ANY FARTHER.

FOR THE 11TH NIGHT IN A ROW, THEY WILL SLEEP IN THE OPEN…BY THE BANKS OF THE RIVER.

THEIR DINNER …TWO PLATES OF DONATED CHICKEN FOR TWELVE PEOPLE.

THEIR BEDS…A FEW SCRAPS OF CARDBOARD. Return to index of stories...

TOOTHBRUSHING-ON CAM

BRUSHING AND FLOSSING YOUR TEETH SHOULD BE A PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.

THAT'S BECAUSE TOOTH DECAY CAN CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS INCLUDING ABSCESSES AND INFLAMMATION IN OTHER PARTS OF YOUR BODY THAT CAN LEAD TO HEART DISEASE.

BUT NOT EVERY TOOTHBRUSH IS CREATED EQUAL.

SO WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO TACKLE YOUR TEETH?

HERE'S MARTHA SHADE WITH TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE. Return to index of stories...

TOOTHBRUSHING-PKG

WE ALL KNOW THAT DENTAL HYGIENE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, BUT SOMETIMES OUR BRUSHING HABITS COULD DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

"We recommend that you brush your teeth for 2 minutes, with a light to a medium amount of force."

WHETHER IT'S ELECTRIC OR MANUAL, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BRUSH CORRECTLY AND REGULARLY.

"What we recommend for a toothbrush is a soft or ultra soft, you know. We try to stay away from using a medium or a hard tooth brush nowadays because it will cause some damage for your own actual teeth."

ELECTRIC DOES HAVE ITS BENEFITS, HOWEVER.

"People have a tendency to brush too hard, or too fast. That's why sometimes the electric toothbrush will help you because it will give you the right amount of time, and will tell you if you are pushing too hard."

IN THE END, THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLE:

"The best way to protect your teeth from cavities and from gum disease is still brushing your teeth."

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

WHERE DO THEY GET THE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THESE PLACES?

"Now that San Francisco has one of the lowest unemployment rates it's been hard for us to find good quality hospitality staff."

EASIER IN A BAD ECONOMY. NOW JOBS GO WANTING. SO A GROUP OF "ADULT CLUBS" HELD THIS JOB FAIR.

"We're from bartenders to door hosts to entertainers."

"I'm here for the job fair, are you hiring men."

"Of course. What's your name."

"Mike. Mike Sugerman."

"Is that your stage name?"

"Sugerman, no, no."

I COULD BE THE SUGAR-MAN, ESPECIALLY WITH THE MONEY YOU CAN MAKE.

"Anywhere from 200 to 400."

"A night?"

"Yeah."

STILL, "ENTERTAINERS" ARE TAKING MOST OF THEIR CLOTHES OFF. ISN'T THAT HARD?

"Being an entertainer is an honest living. It's legit. And we're not doing anything we're not supposed to be doing."

"I've got a nice body. If someone else has a nice body, why not show it off?"

"Like me?"

"Oh yes Mike. Look at those curves. Look at those curves! Those are some nice curves right there."

SHE OFFERED TO GIVE ME SOME LESSONS. BUT THERE WAS NO POLE. SO WE USED OUR CAMERA'S TRIPOD.

"Yeah, Mike, yeah. And then you dance around, turn around, kinda shake it, shake it, shake it huh Mike. Yeah. That's exactly how you do it."

I'LL NEED SOME MORE LESSONS. Return to index of stories...

HPV- THE FUELING FORCE BEHIND CERVICAL CANCER IS LEAVING IT'S MARK

ON MEN. IT IS NOW THE TOP CAUSE OF THROAT CANCERS. WHITE MEN IN

THEIR 50s ARE FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO HAVE AN HPV ORAL CANCER

COMPARED TO THE SAME POPULATION OF WOMEN.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

9:14 We weren't testing for HPV that long ago and we didn't really understand that they

were HPV mediated tumors they were just non-smokers who had throat cancer.

FOR REASONS UNKNOWN, HPV-LINKED CANCERS RESPOND BETTER TO

TREATMENT AND ARE LESS LETHAL THAN OTHER THROAT CANCERS.

INCLUDING ONES LINKED TO SMOKING.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

5:37 Probably 70% of patients who go though combined therapy- which is radiation and

chemotherapy- and this takes about seven weeks- most of those people in six months

to a year at their routine follow up they will tell me 'I never felt better in my life.'

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Early diagnosis and treatment always makes for a better outcome. While there is no

definitive screener for these cancers, experts are finding the most common first sign of

HPV-linked throat cancer is a lump in the neck.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

8:40 Kids- it's common when they get a sore throat they get a lump in their neck. But

with adults they're not supposed to have lumps. And if they have a lump that doesn't

go away then they need to have it checked out.
