CHARLOTTE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, Punta Gorda, Florida

NEWS RELEASE:

Labor Day "Drive Sober" Campaign Begins

As we approach the traditional "end of summer" holiday, the Sheriff's Office reminds everyone to enjoy their Labor day and the dog days of summer in a responsible way by driving sober.

The latest "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign officially begins on Wednesday August 13 and runs through Labor Day on Monday September 1. During that time, the Sheriff's Office will be especially watchful for people who may be driving while impaired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that sponsors the campaign, "one of the deadliest and most often committed - yet preventable - of crimes , has become a serious safety epidemic in our country."

"If you are going to parties where you intend to drink, make sure you have a designated driver," Sheriff Bill Prummell said. "If you drink and drive, you are putting yourself and others at risk. So 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' like the campaign slogan says."

PUNTA GORDA POLICE OFFICERS ARE ALSO CRACKING DOWN ON IMPAIRED DRIVERS.

THEY WILL JOIN OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT ACROSS THE COUNRY IN A NATIONAL EFFORT TO PROMOTE SAFE DRIVING.

THAT CAMPAIGN *ALSO ENDS SEPTEMBER FIRST. WHICH IS LABOR DAY.

POLICE HOPE THE CAMPAIGN WILL RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF IMPAIRED DRIVING AND SAVE MORE LIVES ON THE ROAD.

NEWS RELEASE

August 5, 2014

Punta Gorda Police Crack Down on Impaired Driving During National Enforcement Campaign

Beginning August 13th, Punta Gorda Police Officers have joined forces across the country in

an aggressive effort to crack down on impaired driving. The national impaired driving

enforcement campaign will last through month of August.

Did you know that impaired driving is one of America's most often committed and

deadliest crimes? All 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have established

a threshold making it illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of.08 grams

per deciliter or higher. Yet 10,228 people died in 2010 in traffic crashes in which at least one

vehicle driver or motorcycle rider had a BAC of.08 or higher. But your enforcement efforts

can help reduce the number of impaired drivers on the roads and save lives in 2014!

Chief Albert A. Arenal stated, "We want all of our residents and visitors to have a safe 2014. If you

decide to drink alcohol, please have a designated driver."

This campaign, which ends on September 1, 2014, is an effort to get impaired drivers off the road,

raise public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, and most importantly, to save more

lives on our roadways.

Through the morning a few more showers make sneak onshore but most activity will be confined to the coastal communities. This afternoon expect a mix of mostly sunshine and fair weather cumulus clouds. Highs again will top out in the low 90s near the normal for this time of year.

After midday, sea breeze interaction will setup conditions for scattered showers along both sides of I-75. Only mentions chances for rain around 30% but any given area this afternoon can't be ruled out entirely. Return to index of stories...

POLICE IN RIOT GEAR DEPLOYING TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE THE ROWDY CROWDS.

POLICE STILL *NOT* RELEASING THE NAME OF THE OFFICER INVOLVED, SAYING THEY FEAR FOR HIS SAFETY AFTER THREATS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. AND BECAUSE, AT THIS POINT, HE HASN'T BEEN CHARGED.

FERGUSON POLICE CHIEF SAYING THE OFFICER IS *HORRIFIED* BY WHAT HAS HAPPENED.

"Nobody comes to work saying I want to kill somebody. Nobody wants to go home from work having taken a life"

ACCORDING TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINER'S OFFICE BROWN DIED OF *MULTIPLE* GUNSHOT WOUNDS.

BROWN'S FRIEND, DORIAN JOHNSON, WHO WAS WITH HIM IN THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE SHOOTING SAYS THERE WAS A SCUFFLE AT THE POLICE CAR, AFTER THE OFFICER ASKED THEM TO GET OUT OF THE STREET.

"So now the officer's trying to pull him inside the car and he's trying to get away and at no time the officer said that he was going to do anything until he pulled out his weapon."

"There was a struggle over the officers' weapon. There was at least one shot fired within the car."

BUT JOHNSON SAYS HIS FRIEND NEVER REACHED FOR THE OFFICERS GUN -- INSTEAD, HE SAYS, BROWN BROKE FREE AND STARTED RUNNING DOWN THE STREET WHILE THE OFFICER PURSUED HIM.

"His weapon was already drawn when he got out of the car. He shot again and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air. And he started to get down. But the officer still approached him with his weapon drawn and he fired several more shots. And my friend died."

WAS BROWN"S KILLING JUSTIFIED?

DID HIS RACE HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH HIS DEATH?

IN A TOWN OF 21-THOUSAND, WHERE 66% OF THE POPULATION IS BLACK. BUT THERE ARE ONLY 3 BLACK OFFICERS OUT OF 53 PEOPLE IN THE FERGUSON POLICE FORCE. THERE ARE STILL MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS.

THE FBI IS INVESTIGATING.

THE CIVIL RIGHTS DIVISION OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT HAS OPENED AN INQUIRY, AS WELL.

EVEN THE PRESIDENT IS MONITORING THE SITUATION, SAYING IN A STATEMENT:

"We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds".

BROWNS PARENTS HAVE CALLED FOR PEACE, AS THEY CONTINUE TO DEMAND JUSTICE.

"I need all us to come together and do this the right way so we can get something done about this. No violence man."

CANCER SHARKS-ON CAM-TRX

COULD SHARKS HOLD THE SECRET TO CURING CANCER?

SOME RESEARCHERS AT MOTE MARINE LABORATORY THINK SO.

ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S LEADING SCIENTISTS ON THE SUBJECTS SAYS SHARKS' IMMUNE SYSTEMS CAN BLOCK HUMAN CANCER CELLS.

JOHN ROGERS TAKES A LOOK AT THIS PROMISING RESEARCH. Return to index of stories...

CANCER SHARKS-PKG

SOMETIMES SHARKS GET A BAD RAP.

MOST HUMANS WANT TO STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM, FOR GOOD REASON.

"But researchers here at Mote Marine Laboratory say sharks could potentially save millions of lives. The fish may have the secret to curing cancer."

DR. CARL LUER IS ONE OF AMERICA'S FOREMOST LEADERS IN THIS SUBJECT.

HE SAID IT'S LONG BEEN KNOWN THAT SHARKS RARELY GET SICK.

"Sharks have a low incidence of disease in general and what's interesting is they have a low incidence of cancer."

HE SAYS THE FISH HAVE INCREDIBLY POWERFUL IMMUNE SYSTEMS.

"We've tried to give them cancer and we've not been able to do that."

SO HE REMOVED CELLS FROM THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF A BONNET HEAD SHARK AND TOOK IT TO A LAB.

HE LEARNED IT SECRETED A COMPOUND THAT BLOCKED THE GROWTH OF HUMAN CANCER CELLS!

"We want to be able to get to the point where we can understand what these compounds are so we can move into animal studies."

LUER WANTS TO REPLICATE THESE COMPOUNDS IN A LAB, SO FUTURE RESEARCHERS WON'T HAVE TO RELY ON WILD BONNET HEAD SHARKS.

HE SAYS TRIALS ON HUMANS COULD BE YEARS AWAY. BUT LUER SAYS THIS RESEARCH HOLDS A LOT OF PROMISE.

"There's potential for improved therapies for certain types of cancer that respond well to our compounds, and there's also the potential to develop new antibiotics."

ONE OF HUMANITY'S MOST FEARED CREATURES. HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HELP US. SUPERS:

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Scattered coastal showers are making an appearance this Wednesday morning. A few of them have meandered their way onshore but the bulk of Southwest Florida is dry this morning.
