Scattered coastal showers are making an appearance this Wednesday morning. A few of them have meandered their way onshore but the bulk of Southwest Florida is dry this morning.

Through the morning a few more showers make sneak onshore but most activity will be confined to the coastal communities. This afternoon expect a mix of mostly sunshine and fair weather cumulus clouds. Highs again will top out in the low 90s near the normal for this time of year.

After midday, sea breeze interaction will setup conditions for scattered showers along both sides of I-75. Only mentions chances for rain around 30% but any given area this afternoon can't be ruled out entirely. Return to index of stories...

"Forget your cares - come on down."

CERTAIN PLACES REMIND US OF THE WAY THINGS USED TO BE.

There's a little bit of everything in here.

SANIBEL'S ISLANDER TRADING POST,

If you can't find something in you won't find it anywhere.

LEADS CUSTOMERS DOWN MEMORY LANE.

Yeah it takes them back.

I've always had that desire to collect.

WHEN HURRICANE CHARLEY GAINED STRENGTH,

It went from a 2, to a 3, then a 4.

GEORGINE EMERY AND BOB AVERILL STAYED.

We were as ready for it as we could be.

"Move the tables and roll the rug up."

It was scary. It was very scary. hearing all the trees come down.

I took those pictures of Georgine out on Periwinkle because it was

just a catastrophe out there.

That's me - yeah.

Australian Pines, they went through the air like a dart.

PERIWINKLE WAY'S FAMED CANOPY,

It was almost like a

green tunnel.

WAS GONE.

It's human nature to rebuild - to make things look the way they once

did. After Hurricane Charley, it was painfully clear to everyone on

Sanibel island - Periwinkle Way would never be the same.

It was very common to see people on the side of the road, their first time, pull

off and be literally in tears.

SANIBEL'S CITY MANAGER SAYS THEY GOT RID OF WHAT NEVER REALLY BELONGED.

Well Australian pines are exotic- they're not native to this area.

We are going down Periwinkle Way.

THOUSANDS OF TREES HAVE SINCE BEEN PLANTED.

what kind of trees are they?

ALL NATIVE TO SANIBEL.

Yeah that looks like a baby tree.

30 DIFFERENT SPECIES. BUT NO AUSTRALIAN PINES.

Hurricane Charley destroyed our canopy of trees along Periwinkle Way.

"Contributions from people who love Sanibel."

We express our sincere gratitude to our donors for their vision and support.

Well there's parts of Periwinkle where you can now see that canopy

touching again.

THE NEW TREES HAVE A 97-PERCENT SURVIVAL RATE.

When you plant a tree you're planting it not for yourself, you're

planting it for the next generation.

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN FULLY RECAPTURE THE PAST.

No, no that is in our minds. The old canopies. Maybe in some old

postcards.

JUST AS NATURE WOULD HAVE IT.

I like it a little bit better actually.

HPV- THE FUELING FORCE BEHIND CERVICAL CANCER IS LEAVING IT'S MARK ON MEN. IT IS NOW THE TOP CAUSE OF THROAT CANCERS. WHITE MEN IN THEIR 50s ARE FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO HAVE AN HPV ORAL CANCER COMPARED TO THE SAME POPULATION OF WOMEN.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

9:14 We weren't testing for HPV that long ago and we didn't really understand that they were HPV mediated tumors they were just non-smokers who had throat cancer.

FOR REASONS UNKNOWN, HPV-LINKED CANCERS RESPOND BETTER TO TREATMENT AND ARE LESS LETHAL THAN OTHER THROAT CANCERS. INCLUDING ONES LINKED TO SMOKING.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

5:37 Probably 70% of patients who go though combined therapy- which is radiation and chemotherapy- and this takes about seven weeks- most of those people in six months to a year at their routine follow up they will tell me 'I never felt better in my life.'

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Early diagnosis and treatment always makes for a better outcome. While there is no definitive screener for these cancers, experts are finding the most common first sign of HPV-linked throat cancer is a lump in the neck.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

8:40 Kids- it's common when they get a sore throat they get a lump in their neck. But with adults they're not supposed to have lumps. And if they have a lump that doesn't go away then they need to have it checked out.

A WORD TO THE WISE- SPEAK UP IF YOU HAVE ANY SUSPICION OF CANCER. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TO SAVE THE IRAQI YAZIDIS, THE 130 NEW ARMED U-S ADVISORS IN NORTHERN IRAQ COULD WORK ON THE GROUND.

BUT NOT TO FIGHT ISIS, SAYS SENIOR OBAMA NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER.

BEN RHODES, TODAY.

Sot: Ben Rhodes, White Houes Deputy National Security Adviser

" I think the principle holds that we're not putting ground forces into combat role in iraq"

THE AIRDROPS OF FOOD AND WATER ARE A STOPGAP

THE U-S GOAL IS TO GET THE YAZIDIS OFF THE MOUNTAIN TO SAFETY. MAYBE 100 THOUSAND REFUGEES.

U-S AIRSTRIKES AGAINST ISIS

COULD CLEAR AN EXIT CORRIDOR.

AND AIRLIFTS ARE POSSIBLE

AND ALL THE YAZIDIS COULD GET OUT, LIKE THESE FEW ALREADY HAVE.

IT'S DANGEROUS; U-S CASUALTIES ARE POSSIBLE. BUT MOST U-S LAWMAKERS APPEAR ONBOARD.

Sot: Rep. Chris Van Hollen

"what i do not support and i think the president has been clear that he is not going to do is send american ground forces in the combat operations"

BUT REPORTED ISIS ATTROCITIES ARE SO HORRIFYING

Sot: Haider Elias, Yazidi

"they --they-- they kill people first then cut their body to pieces and they film them"

SOME U-S LAWMAKERS SOUND OPEN TO U-S FORCES TAKING ON ISIS

Sot: Rep Robert Pittenger

10;17 58 having troops on the ground certainly should not be our objective, but we can not use sight of the fact that this is the greatest security threat we have ever had 18 05

IRAQI PRIME MINISTER MALIKI IS STILL REFUSING TO TURN OVER POWER TO A SUCCESSOR.

AND CAR BOMBS WENT OFF IN BAGHDAD

NO PLACE IN IRAQ IS SAFE AS MORE AMERICAN FORCES HEAD IN.

THE INCREASE IN REVENUE FROM COLORADO'S NEW MARIJUANA TAXES -- IS EXPECTED TO BE *HALF* OF WHAT THE VOTER GUIDE ESTIMATED LAST YEAR.

THERE'S ALSO AN UNEXPECTED INCREASE IN MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENTS -- WHO *DON'T* HAVE TO PAY THE NEW TAXES.
