NEWS RELEASE:

Labor Day "Drive Sober" Campaign Begins

As we approach the traditional "end of summer" holiday, the Sheriff's Office reminds everyone to enjoy their Labor day and the dog days of summer in a responsible way by driving sober.

The latest "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign officially begins on Wednesday August 13 and runs through Labor Day on Monday September 1. During that time, the Sheriff's Office will be especially watchful for people who may be driving while impaired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that sponsors the campaign, "one of the deadliest and most often committed - yet preventable - of crimes , has become a serious safety epidemic in our country."

"If you are going to parties where you intend to drink, make sure you have a designated driver," Sheriff Bill Prummell said. "If you drink and drive, you are putting yourself and others at risk. So 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' like the campaign slogan says."

Punta Gorda Police Crack Down on Impaired Driving During National Enforcement Campaign

Beginning August 13th, Punta Gorda Police Officers have joined forces across the country in

an aggressive effort to crack down on impaired driving. The national impaired driving

enforcement campaign will last through month of August.

Did you know that impaired driving is one of America's most often committed and

deadliest crimes? All 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have established

a threshold making it illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of.08 grams

per deciliter or higher. Yet 10,228 people died in 2010 in traffic crashes in which at least one

vehicle driver or motorcycle rider had a BAC of.08 or higher. But your enforcement efforts

can help reduce the number of impaired drivers on the roads and save lives in 2014!

Chief Albert A. Arenal stated, "We want all of our residents and visitors to have a safe 2014. If you

decide to drink alcohol, please have a designated driver."

This campaign, which ends on September 1, 2014, is an effort to get impaired drivers off the road,

raise public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, and most importantly, to save more

lives on our roadways.

COULD SHARKS HOLD THE SECRET TO CURING CANCER?

SOME RESEARCHERS AT MOTE MARINE LABORATORY THINK SO.

ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S LEADING SCIENTISTS ON THE SUBJECTS SAY SHARKS' IMMUNE SYSTEMS CAN BLOCK HUMAN CANCER CELLS.

CANCER SHARKS-PKG

SOMETIMES SHARKS GET A BAD RAP.

MOST HUMANS WANT TO STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM, FOR GOOD REASON.

"But researchers here at Mote Marine Laboratory say sharks could potentially save millions of lives. The fish may have the secret to curing cancer."

DR. CARL LUER IS ONE OF AMERICA'S FOREMOST LEADERS IN THIS SUBJECT.

HE SAID IT'S LONG BEEN KNOWN THAT SHARKS RARELY GET SICK.

"Sharks have a low incidence of disease in general and what's interesting is they have a low incidence of cancer."

HE SAYS THE FISH HAVE INCREDIBLY POWERFUL IMMUNE SYSTEMS.

"We've tried to give them cancer and we've not been able to do that."

SO HE REMOVED CELLS FROM THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF A BONNET HEAD SHARK AND TOOK IT TO A LAB.

HE LEARNED IT SECRETED A COMPOUND THAT BLOCKED THE GROWTH OF HUMAN CANCER CELLS!

"We want to be able to get to the point where we can understand what these compounds are so we can move into animal studies."

LUER WANTS TO REPLICATE THESE COMPOUNDS IN A LAB, SO FUTURE RESEARCHERS WON'T HAVE TO RELY ON WILD BONNET HEAD SHARKS.

HE SAYS TRIALS ON HUMANS COULD BE YEARS AWAY. BUT LUER SAYS THIS RESEARCH HOLDS A LOT OF PROMISE.

"There's potential for improved therapies for certain types of cancer that respond well to our compounds, and there's also the potential to develop new antibiotics."

ONE OF HUMANITY'S MOST FEARED CREATURES. HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HELP US. SUPERS:

ORANGE COUNTY'S - JOHN WAYNE -

50-AIRPORTS WERE TESTED.

THEY WERE EVALUTATED ON CARRIER, PERFORMANCE RANKING - AND THEIR MEDIAN DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.

For many of us, a mobile phone is just as necessary as our luggage or passport when we're traveling. Not only do we rely on our phones to check in for flights and keep abreast of any delays or changes, we use them to let all our friends on social media know that we are jetting off. Not to mention that we can get work done on our phones and use them as a weapon against boredom during the inevitable, seemingly endless waiting.

A variety of factors can impact your mobile experience at airports, from dense building materials to network infrastructure types to your location within the airport itself. Take a look at our handy infographic to learn about some of the mobile performance challenges you might encounter at airports.

We know how important airport mobile service is for you, and that's why we test the data performance of major mobile carriers at the 50 busiest airports in the U.S.-from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which sees nearly 47 million passengers per year, to Port Columbus International Airport in Columbus, OH, with just over 3 million passengers annually.

You can check out which airports scored highest overall, which ones scored highest for your carrier, and how results have changed over the past year.

High-flying airports

To offer an overall picture of mobile performance at airports, we've ranked 50 U.S. airports by data performance. Here are the top five in our list:

Southwest Florida International Airport

O'Hare International Airport

John Wayne Airport - Orange County

Memphis International Airport

General Mitchell International Airport

Check out the chart at the end of this report to see performance results for all 50 airports at a glance. Users may generally get better performance at the airports that are ranked higher, although that may vary by individual carrier.

The rankings are based on an average of all carriers' performance at a particular airport, weighted by the estimated national percentage of subscribers on a given network. This means that if one carrier has a higher share of subscribers than another, that carrier's scores are weighted more heavily to ensure that the total score is representative of the current mobile landscape.

First-class mobile service

Taking off over time

To give you a sense of how mobile network data performance at airports has changed, we've compared the latest results to those from the second half of 2013. Keep in mind that if more than one network won a RootScore Award at an airport, both got credit for the victory. In other words, while we tested at 50 airports, a handful of first-place ties means that we handed out more than 50 Airport RootScore Awards.

In our testing for the first half of 2014, Verizon pulled ahead of the other carriers with the No. 1 ranking at 30 airports, compared with only 19 wins in our RootScore Report for the second half of 2013.

T-Mobile also made impressive gains for 2014, winning the top ranking at 20 airports, compared with only 9 wins last time.

Meanwhile, AT&T won the No. 1 ranking at 36 airports last time, but only had 11 wins in our latest testing, falling to third among the networks.

Fast-flying data speeds

Waiting around at the airport can be frustrating enough; you don't want to be waiting on your phone because of slow data speeds as well. In our testing, Verizon led the pack in airport data speeds with a blazing 77.8 Mbps at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. Meanwhile, AT&T's fastest median download speed was 37.4 Mbps, recorded at Dallas Love Field. Sprint's top recorded speed was 30.4 Mbps at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, while T-Mobile's fastest speed was 27.3 Mbps at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson.

Destination: More informed mobile decisions

Airport RootScore Reports are part of a broader, complementary series of reports and tools that we offer to help you make more informed mobile decisions. Our professional testers have recently finished testing the top 125 metropolitan markets in the U.S. once again, and you can find these Metro reports on our RootScore Reports page.

And watch for our mid-year review, featuring a comprehensive evaluation of network performance at the national level, coming soon.

5:52 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Full Forecast

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Scattered coastal showers are making an appearance this Wednesday morning. A few of them have meandered their way onshore but the bulk of Southwest Florida is dry this morning.

Through the morning a few more showers make sneak onshore but most activity will be confined to the coastal communities. This afternoon expect a mix of mostly sunshine and fair weather cumulus clouds. Highs again will top out in the low 90s near the normal for this time of year.

After midday, sea breeze interaction will setup conditions for scattered showers along both sides of I-75. Only mentions chances for rain around 30% but any given area this afternoon can't be ruled out entirely. Return to index of stories...
