HELLO-2 SHOT

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M BRENNA WEICK.

AND I'M NATE FOY.

THANKS FOR JOINING US THIS NEW YEARS EVE.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST MATT GRAY IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-CHROMA

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We're waking up to a clear and cool morning across Southwest Florida with a few 40s showing up this morning in parts of the region. A few areas of patchy fog could develop, but overall conditions this morning look spectacular.

For the afternoon we'll see temperatures rise to the low 70s with a few high cirrus clouds. It should be an excellent end to 2017. If you have plans to ring in the new year at midnight conditions should be nice as well with partly cloudy skies and temperatures around 60 degrees.

Clouds will move in overnight ahead of a cold front that will arrive by Monday evening. This will be the first legitimate shot for rain we've had in a few weeks! Showers will begin during the afternoon and will continue overnight. Temperatures will start off in the upper 50s on New Year's Day and only reach the upper 60s in the afternoon.

The cloudy and showery conditions will stick around through Tuesday and Wednesday as the front stalls out over South Florida. Temperatures will be quite cool with lows around 50 and highs only in the low 60s. Breezy weather will make it feel even chillier.

The clouds and rain move off Wednesday night as a strong push of cold and dry air sinks into Florida behind the front. Skies will be clear and sunny from this point into next weekend, but temperatures will drop to the 40s in the morning with highs struggling to reach the 60s in the afternoon. This will be a quite noteworthy stretch of winter weather by Southwest Florida standards. Return to index of stories...

NATS OF 3-2- 1- COUNTDOWN

It's a night of celebration but to make sure you don't end up *here health experts recommend making a plan for the night.

8:38 make plans to have a designated driver if you're going out drinking. You want to make sure that

you're paying attention on the roadways, whether you're the driver or the pedestrian.

For the last three years close a dozen people have been admitted to the Lee Health Trauma Center on

New Year's Eve.

5:11 most of those have actually been from falls. They have been older adults that have been falling.

STANDUP: if you're having people over, make sure rugs, extension cords, and other objects are not

putting people at risk for a fall. If people are drinking make sure they have a safe way home and keep

alcohol away from children.

6:29 if you're having that party and somebody seems like they are really toasted and they pass out,

don't just leave them, call to get them some help because if their respiratory is less than 8 there's a

chance they won't be waking up the next morning.

If you plan on lighting fireworks, make sure you have water nearby and never relight a dud.

7:05 keep the fireworks away from the home, away from the dead trees and dead grass, anything that

might catch fire because they are very flammable.

Most importantly, if you are walking or driving make sure you are paying attention to your surroundings.

7:46 we've already had 98 people who have died on our roadway here this year and that was of

November 6 th so we don't want that number to go any higher.

If you plan on drinking, *don't plan on driving. Just a few ways to keep your New Year celebration safe

and fun. For Lee Health I'm Lindsey Morton. Return to index of stories...

Dog missing from Florida airport reunited with family

Eds: APNewsNow.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. - A dog that bolted from his crate at a Florida airport has been reunited his owners' family.

The dog named Joker went missing Dec. 21 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. In a Sun Sentinel report , Summer Burgos said a group of neighbors in Dania Beach found and cared for her dog.

Burgos couldn't search for Joker herself because she serves in the Navy and is training in Pensacola. Her husband also is in the Navy and is deployed overseas.

The couple lives in San Diego. Burgos flew Joker to Florida to live temporarily with family in Davie.

Neighbors who found the 2-year-old Canaan dog roaming Dania Beach on Thursday contacted his owners through information on his dog tags.

Burgos said Joker got a checkup at a veterinarian's office before finally going home with her family. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-CHROMA
