CA STINGRAYS-OC, VO

DOZENS OF PEOPLE -

STUNG BY STINGRAYS AT A CALIFORNIA BEACH.

73 PEOPLE SAY THEY WERE STUNG AT A BEACH JUST SOUTH OF LOS ANGELES.

EXPERTS SAY THE SPIKE IN STINGRAY INJURIES IS BECAUSE THE TIDES ARE EXTREMELY LOW AND THE WATER IS ON THE WARM SIDE. IN THE 60 DEGREE RANGE.

THE NUMBER OF INJURIES FROM STINGRAYS, REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH AT HUNTINGTON BEACH FRIDAY, ABOUT 40 MILES SOUTH OF LOS ANGELES.

SEVENTY THREE PEOPLE REPORTED BEING STUNG THAT DAY.

EXPERTS SAY THE SPIKE IN STINGRAY INJURIES IS BECAUSE THE TIDES ARE EXTREMELY LOW AND THE WATER IS ON THE WARM SIDE. IN THE 60 DEGREE RANGE.

MORE PEOPLE SHOW UP DUE HOLIDAY WORK SCHEDULES, SCHOOL BEING OUT AND TOURISTS.

THERE WERE SO MANY REPORTED INJURIES THAT LIFEGUARDS SET UP A STINGRAY STATION WITH CHAIRS AND BUCKETS FOR PEOPLE SEEKING RELIEF DURING TODAY'S EVENT.

APPARENTLY HOT WATER IS THE KEY TO EASING THE PAIN IMMEDIATELY, BUT IT'S A PUNCTURE WOUND, SO THE INJURED IS ENCOURAGED TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF DEVELOPING AN INFECTION.

"They say it helps break down the protein-based venom, whatever that means. But I'm hoping it does the job, 'cause it doesn't feel good. It stings, yeah. I can't believe it. I've been surfing around here for 35 years, never been stung." Return to index of stories...

FL POLAR PLUNGE-WIPE-VOTOPS

NEW YEARS DAY MEANS "POLAR" PLUNGES.

500 PEOPLE RUSHED INTO THE WATER AT JACKSONVILLE BEACH TODAY -

IN 60-DEGREE ATLANTIC WATERS.

CNN: SE-009MO FL: POLAR PLUNGE AT JACKSONVILLE BEACH

Wind, rain, and crashing waves led to a change-up in this year's Polar Plunge.

Still a crowd of people carried on the tradition.

"They always say you should do this for good luck," 20-year Polar Plunge veteran Tom Reeves said.

"When I got out I felt like a popsicle," a young first-timer said.

Polar Plunge organizers said just a splash would count since rough seas and strong winds could be dangerous far from the beach.

However, that did not deter Tom Reeves, sporting a bathrobe, from taking a dip. He recalls another Polar Plunge with rival temperatures.

"There was one in the 1990s that had ice on the street, but this with the wind chill probably one of the coldest," Reeves said.

This year there was a lower turnout than previous plunges and many were quick to blame the weather. An estimated 500 people raced to the surf in hopes of washing away 2017 in the 60-degree Atlantic waters.

"It's a good time to start over, get invigorated and excited," Patty Soud said after drying-off from the Plunge. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CHILLY WEEK AHEAD, WINDY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

P. M. Update - Tonight will continue to be cloudy with some areas of light rain and mist. Lows will be cool, falling into the 40's and low 50's. A Windchill Advisory is in place for DeSoto County overnight as windchill values could drop into the low 30s.

**Boaters - A Small Craft Advisory will remain in place from now through Tuesday night as conditions on local waterways will be very rough due to strong winds.**

Tuesday afternoon skies will remain cloudy with a few light rain showers. Expect a windy day with gusts up to 30 mph. Highs will only make it into the low to mid 60s, meaning it will feel like a pretty cool day.

Wednesday will remain breezy and cloudy with a few showers early, but expect some clearing late in the day. Highs will still only make it into the mid 60s. By Wednesday night and Thursday morning, lows will drop into the upper 30s and low 40s.

Thursday afternoon we will see the return of plenty of sunshine, along with slightly less wind. Highs will remain well below average, only topping out in the upper 50s and low 60s. Another cold night is in store for Thursday night and Friday morning, with lows in the 30s inland, and low 40s near the coast.

By the end of the weekend warmer weather returns. Highs will be back in the low 70s by Sunday, and mid 70's are likely Monday and Tuesday. Return to index of stories...
