FIRST WEATHER-WALL

CHILLY WEEK AHEAD, WINDY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

P. M. Update - Tonight will continue to be cloudy with some areas of light rain and mist. Lows will be cool, falling into the 40's and low 50's. A Windchill Advisory is in place for DeSoto County overnight as windchill values could drop into the low 30s.

**Boaters - A Small Craft Advisory will remain in place from now through Tuesday night as conditions on local waterways will be very rough due to strong winds.**

Tuesday afternoon skies will remain cloudy with a few light rain showers. Expect a windy day with gusts up to 30 mph. Highs will only make it into the low to mid 60s, meaning it will feel like a pretty cool day.

Wednesday will remain breezy and cloudy with a few showers early, but expect some clearing late in the day. Highs will still only make it into the mid 60s. By Wednesday night and Thursday morning, lows will drop into the upper 30s and low 40s.

Thursday afternoon we will see the return of plenty of sunshine, along with slightly less wind. Highs will remain well below average, only topping out in the upper 50s and low 60s. Another cold night is in store for Thursday night and Friday morning, with lows in the 30s inland, and low 40s near the coast.

By the end of the weekend warmer weather returns. Highs will be back in the low 70s by Sunday, and mid 70's are likely Monday and Tuesday. Return to index of stories...

SOME SAY WAGE INCREASES - NO MATTER HOW SMALL - ARE A SLIPPERY SLOPE.

25:00 you know it doesn't sound like much but then you keep going up and up and up where does it end 04

BUT THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY IS *REQUIRED* BY STATE LAW TO ADJUST EACH YEAR'S MINIMUM WAGE BASED ON THE FEDERAL CONSUMER PRICE INDEX.

THIS YEAR'S CALCULATIONS LED TO AN ALMOST TWO PERCENT INCREASE.

24:46 problem is if we keep raising it nobody wants to leave those entry positions 51

SUPPORTERS SAY MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS DESERVE MORE THAN A FIFTEEN CENT INCREASE.

37:22 some people really do deserve that money 24 I mean they work their butts off 26 and get paid nothing 29

EVEN SAYING THEY WOULD SUPPORT A MINIMUM WAGE OF FIFTEEN *DOLLARS*

37:33 if they've earned it then definitely absolutely 36

BUT CRITICS ARGUE THAT ONLY TEENAGERS SHOULD WORK IN MINIMUM WAGE POSITIONS.

25:13 seems to me the problem is now that we're depending on this minimum to support families 18 and that's not what it was designed for 20

SAYING A FIFTEEN DOLLAR MINIMUM WAGE WOULD BE BAD FOR EVERYONE.

25:33 how do you pay a guy fifteen dollars to put milk in a bag at a grocery store 36 and not think that the milk is gonna go up 38

WORRYING THAT A RATE AS HIGH AS FIFTEEN DOLLARS WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO LOCAL BUSINESSES

34:36 I get concerned a little bit about the business perspective 39

HUNDREDS GATHERED AT A FLORIDA BEACH FOR A "POLAR" PLUNGE.

500 PEOPLE RUSHED INTO THE WATER AT JACKSONVILLE BEACH TODAY -

IN 60-DEGREE ATLANTIC WATERS.

CNN: SE-009MO FL: POLAR PLUNGE AT JACKSONVILLE BEACH

Wind, rain, and crashing waves led to a change-up in this year's Polar Plunge.

Still a crowd of people carried on the tradition.

"They always say you should do this for good luck," 20-year Polar Plunge veteran Tom Reeves said.

"When I got out I felt like a popsicle," a young first-timer said.

Polar Plunge organizers said just a splash would count since rough seas and strong winds could be dangerous far from the beach.

However, that did not deter Tom Reeves, sporting a bathrobe, from taking a dip. He recalls another Polar Plunge with rival temperatures.

"There was one in the 1990s that had ice on the street, but this with the wind chill probably one of the coldest," Reeves said.

This year there was a lower turnout than previous plunges and many were quick to blame the weather. An estimated 500 people raced to the surf in hopes of washing away 2017 in the 60-degree Atlantic waters.

"It's a good time to start over, get invigorated and excited," Patty Soud said after drying-off from the Plunge. Return to index of stories...

STARTING TODAY--FLORIDA'S MINIMUM WAGE IS FIFTEEN CENTS HIGHER -

MAKING IT 8-25 AN HOUR.

THIS HOURLY INCREASE MEANS FULL TIME MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS--

WOULD EARN ABOUT THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS *MORE* THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR.

STARTING TODAY--FLORIDA'S MINIMUM WAGE IS FIFTEEN CENTS HIGHER.

IT'S 8-25 AN HOUR IN 2018.

AND WHILE 15 CENTS SOUNDS LIKE A MINISCULE AMOUNT--

THIS HOURLY INCREASE MEANS FULL TIME MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS--

WOULD EARN ABOUT THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS *MORE* THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR.

THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY IS *REQUIRED* BY STATE LAW TO ADJUST EACH YEAR'S MINIMUM WAGE BASED ON THE FEDERAL CONSUMER PRICE INDEX.

THIS YEAR'S CALCULATIONS LED TO AN ALMOST TWO PERCENT INCREASE.

SOME SAY WAGE INCREASES - NO MATTER HOW SMALL - ARE A SLIPPERY SLOPE.

BUTT TO

25:13 seems to me the problem is now that we're depending on this minimum to support families 18 and that's not what it was designed for 20

FOR NOW THE MINIMUM WAGE FOR FLORIDA EMPLOYEES IS SET AT 8-25.

WORKERS WHO MAKE TIPS HAVE A SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER RATE AT 5-23. Return to index of stories...
