FIRST WEATHER-WXWALL

PUSH ALERT #1: A chilly rain developing this morning across Southwest Florida. Meteorologist Jason Dunning tracks the rain and another big blast of cold air coming tonight.

PUSH ALERT #2: Snow and ice for parts of Florida this morning! Meteorologist Jason Dunning is tracking the wintry weather plus a possible freeze for SWFL on NBC2 News TODAY.

Another big blast of cold air arrives in Southwest Florida today, but before the chilly air rushes in, we'll see the potential for a few showers today.

The highest rain chance will come during the first half of the day, so grab the umbrella on the way out the door this morning.

Today's rain won't be too heavy or widespread, and rain amounts will generally stay below a quarter inch.

Temperatures won't start of as low as yesterday morning, but it's still going to be quite chilly especially once you factor in the brisk northerly wind that will gust up to 20-25 mph at times today.

We'll start off in the low to mid 50s this morning, and with some breaks in the clouds this afternoon, we should manage to warm into the low to mid 60s.

Temperatures will turn sharply cold tonight, and the wind will make it feel several degrees colder.

Morning lows Thursday will tumble into the low 40s in town and into the mid to upper 30s across our inland communities like Hendry and Glades County.

Wind chill values, however, will get down into the 30s and possibly as low as the upper 20s deep inland.

The good news is Thursday and Friday will feature a lot more sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s thanks to a cold northerly wind.

Friday and Saturday morning will be the coldest of the week, and temperatures will be close to freezing for locations farther north like Arcadia and deeper inland over portions of Glades and Hendry County.

A freeze watch may be issued for our inland counties for Friday and Saturday morning, so precautions may need to be taken to protect plants and vegetation here.

The cold snap ends late this weekend into early next week as temperatures rebound into the 70s, but long-range forecast models hint at another cool down coming by the middle of next week. Return to index of stories...

From colonial and downtown people tend to go as fast as it is on 41.

CROSSING--

HAS ALSO BEEN A DIFFICULT PROBLEM FROM BIKERS AND WALKERS-

Sometimes it's concerning and scary.

THAT'S WHY FORT MYERS COUNCIL MEMBER MICHAEL FLANDERS-- IS PUSHING FOR THIS PLAN THAT WOULD ADD SEVERAL CROSSWALKS BETWEEN VICTORIA AVE AND BRAMAN AVENUE.

I'm a runner myself and my daughter just got a bike for Christmas so we tend to cross at the cross walk but there is not one here.

GERMANY HAT SPEECH LAW-BAM LEFT KEY

NEW INTERNET LAWS ARE IN EFFECT IN GERMANY FOR 2018.

ALL THE BIG SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES COULD FACE SOME MAJOR FINES---

IF THEY DON'T GET RID OF CONTENT THAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE HATE SPEECH OR "FAKE NEWS."

THEY COULD FACE A FINE OF UP TO 50 MILLION EUROS OR 60 MILLION DOLLARS.

--LEAD IN--

GERMANY KICKS OFF 20-18 WITH NEW INTERNET LAWS.

FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES CAN NOW BE FINED UP TO 60-MILLION DOLLARS --

IF THEY DON'T QUICKLY REMOVE CONTENT DEEMED TO BE HATE SPEECH OR FAKE NEWS.

--REPORTER LOOKLIVE-AS FOLLOWS--

Chris Burns: "Germany's new network enforcement law already having impact. This law requires social network sites to pull any kind of controversial material inciting hatred off of their sites and they face a fine of up to 50 million euros or 60 million dollars if they don't pull it off within 24 hours of the maximum to one week. This law has already had impact through New Years. There was a New Year's tweet by one of the leaders of the Alternative for Germany. That is the AFD the far right party that got more than 10 percent in the last election. She made a a controversial tweet criticizing Muslims. The police are now investigating that her site was frozen for 12 hours and the tweet was pulled and she has come back saying that this is the end of the constitutional state. Is this an assault on free speech or some people say that but there is a poll that was taken last year that shows 70 percent of Germans in favor of this new law. Heiko Maas the Justice Minister is saying freedom of speech ends where criminal law begins. But what is all this going to cost. Well Facebook is already hiring hundreds of people to help in this effort to stop any kind of incitement to hatred on Facebook. And of course there is coming up in spurring a new data protection law across the E.U. that is also likely to cost the social networks a lot of money. Chris Burns CNN Berlin.

NORTH KOREAN LEADER KIM JONG-UN GAVE THE ORDER TO RE-OPEN A HOTLINE FOR COMMUNICATION -- STARTING DISCUSSIONS ON SENDING A DELEGATION TO THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN SOUTH KOREA NEXT MONTH.

THE CALL COMES AFTER A RARE MOVE BY KIM IN HIS SPEECH ON MONDAY: OFFERING AN OLIVE BRANCH TO SOUTH KOREA.

Lt. Col. Rick Francona , CNN Military Analyst: "He started off his statement with his threats toward the United States. Then, he went on to make this more conciliatory gesture toward the South. I think this was very well played by the North Koreas, and I think this might be trying to drive a wedge -- a small wedge -- between the United States and South Korea."

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION HAD BEEN SKEPTICAL TUESDAY ABOUT THE SINCERITY OF KIM'S OFFER.

Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.: "We won't take any of the talks seriously if they don't do something to ban all nuclear weapons in North Korea. We consider this to be a very reckless regime. We don't think we need a band aid and we don't think we need to smile and take a picture. We think we need them stop nuclear weapons and they need to stop it now."

.AND PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP RESPONDED TO KIM'S THREATS AS PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP OFTEN DOES -- BY TAUNTING HIM ON TWITTER, WRITING, "WILL SOMEONE FROM DEPLETED AND FOOD-STARVED REGIME PLEASE INFORM HIM THAT I, TOO, HAVE A NUCLEAR BUTTON. NATS OF PLAYING TENNIS

It's a common injury during physical activity.

:48 it's very common in tennis players. It's caused basically by a misstep and the tendon tears right in the middle.

STANDUP: The Achilles tendon is about as thick as your thumb and connects the muscles in the back of the calf to the heel bone. A rupture can happen when the tendon is overstretched.

:28 there are really two types of Achilles tendon trauma that we treat. The first is a rupture. That's if you misstep, a lot of times people will hear or feel a pop. A lot of times people will say it felt like someone shot me in the heel.

Patients can also develop a chronic Achilles injury where the tendon develops micro tears.

2:25 it is usually painful right when it happens and then usually the pain dissipates and people think they have sprained their ankle.

But the pain doesn't go away long term. Patients can also develop swelling and bumps on the back of the heel, which in many cases requires surgery to relieve the pain.

4:58 the acute rupture, CUT we make an incision over the tendon. The ends of the tendon actually look like a horse's tail. There are many fibers. We clean them up. We repair the ends so the tendons come right back together.

Stretching before you start physical activity can help prevent an Achilles tear.

4:32 you definitely want to warm up if you're playing tennis you want to do some heel cord stretching certainly before. If you're running you really want to make sure you stretch those heel cords because a tight heel cord is usually found in almost all of these injuries.

The more flexibility in the tendon, the less likely it is to tear easily. If a patient has sudden pain in the back of their foot, prolonging treatment can make the tear more difficult to repair. For Lee Health I'm Lindsey Morton. Return to index of stories...
