FIRST WEATHER-WX TOUCH

Another big blast of cold air arrives in Southwest Florida today, but before the chilly air rushes in, we'll see the potential for a few showers today.

The highest rain chance will come during the first half of the day, so grab the umbrella on the way out the door this morning.

Today's rain won't be too heavy or widespread, and rain amounts will generally stay below a quarter inch.

Temperatures won't start of as low as yesterday morning, but it's still going to be quite chilly especially once you factor in the brisk northerly wind that will gust up to 20-25 mph at times today.

We'll start off in the low to mid 50s this morning, and with some breaks in the clouds this afternoon, we should manage to warm into the low to mid 60s.

Temperatures will turn sharply cold tonight, and the wind will make it feel several degrees colder.

Morning lows Thursday will tumble into the low 40s in town and into the mid to upper 30s across our inland communities like Hendry and Glades County.

Wind chill values, however, will get down into the 30s and possibly as low as the upper 20s deep inland.

The good news is Thursday and Friday will feature a lot more sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s thanks to a cold northerly wind.

Friday and Saturday morning will be the coldest of the week, and temperatures will be close to freezing for locations farther north like Arcadia and deeper inland over portions of Glades and Hendry County.

A freeze watch may be issued for our inland counties for Friday and Saturday morning, so precautions may need to be taken to protect plants and vegetation here.

The cold snap ends late this weekend into early next week as temperatures rebound into the 70s, but long-range forecast models hint at another cool down coming by the middle of next week. Return to index of stories...

AND HE'S SINGLING OUT THE US, ISRAEL, AND SAUDI ARABIA AS THOSE ENEMIES.

ON THE OTHER SIDE, WE HAVE THE MODERATE PRESIDENT HASSAN ROUHANI EXPLICITLY SAYING IT WOULD BE WRONG TO SAY THIS IS THE WORK OF FOREIGNERS AND HE'S CALLING FOR THE PROTESTERS TO BE SHOWN SOME UNDERSTANDING.

HE SAYS THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR IRAN'S LEADERS TO LEARN FROM ITS PEOPLE.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXCTR WXWALL

COOKING OILS-ONCAM

WE USE COOKING OILS ALL THE TIME FOR BAKING -- SAUTEING -- AND MAKING SALAD DRESSINGS.

BUT WHAT OILS ARE THE HEALTHIEST?

BRITTANY MOORE REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

COOKING OILS-PKG

THE HEALTH BENEFITS ARE ALL OVER THE MAP -- DEPENDING ON WHAT OIL YOU CHOOSE TO USE.

"My wife likes us to use olive oil or an oil that's a little more healthy."

"Extra virgin olive oil is pretty well-known for its health benefits. And it is really healthy for us. It's really high in monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to help lower the bad cholesterol in our bodies."

RESEARCH SHOWS REPLACING SATURATED AND TRANS FATS -- WITH UNSATURATED FATS LIKE MONO AND POLY - UNSATURATED FAT --- CAN PROVIDE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS.

SOME OF THE MAIN HEALTHY OILS AMBER SUGGESTS ARE OLIVE -- CANOLA -- SAFFLOWER -- AND AVOCADO.

NOW ---- DEPENDING ON HOW YOU'RE COOKING YOUR MEAL -- ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU'RE KEEPING AN OIL'S SMOKE POINT IN MIND.

"Smoke point is the point at which the oil starts to smoke. And what we don't want to do is heat oil past its smoke point, because in addition to smoking there's a chemical transition that occurs. And harmful chemicals are produced."

FOR COOKING ON THE STOVETOP.

"I would stick to more of a canola oil, a safflower oil, or even an avocado oil. Avocado oil has a lot of the same health benefits as the extra virgin olive oil, but almost 500 degrees smoke point."

WHILE BAKING.

"Baking honestly most of the time, especially if you're doing the holiday baking, you're not going to want that olive oil flavor in. So you could use an extra light olive oil or I like to use canola oil. It too has the healthy fat profile and is a very mild, easy to use oil."

AMBER CAUTIONS US ON USING COCONUT OIL AS OUR MAIN COOKING OIL - BASED ON A RECENT STUDY BY THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION, AND THE HIGH AMOUNTS OF SATURATED FAT IT CONTAINS. Return to index of stories...
