LOCAL FIRST WEATHER-CHROMA

ALLYSON LOCAL WX

Temperatures will turn sharply cold tonight, and the wind will make it feel several degrees colder.

Morning lows Thursday will tumble into the low 40s in town and into the mid to upper 30s across our inland communities like Hendry and Glades County.

Wind chill values, however, will get down into the 30s and possibly as low as the upper 20s deep inland.

The good news is Thursday and Friday will feature a lot more sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s thanks to a cold northerly wind.

Friday and Saturday morning will be the coldest of the week, and temperatures will be close to freezing for locations farther north like Arcadia and deeper inland over portions of Glades and Hendry County.

A freeze watch may be issued for our inland counties for Friday and Saturday morning, so precautions may need to be taken to protect plants and vegetation here.

The cold snap ends late this weekend into early next week as temperatures rebound into the 70s, but long-range forecast models hint at another cool down coming by the middle of next week. Return to index of stories...

SOT Martin Ouellette, Everblades Goalie: "I wouldn't call it cold for where I'm from."

14 of the everblades 22 players are from Canada.

So is their head coach who says this cold spell is nothing compared his childhood in Ottawa.

SOT Brad Ralph, Everblades Head Coach: "Its cold for Florida. It's more like fall weather for Northeast states and Canada."

But Everblades defensemen Logan Roe is a Fort Myers native. And he has a very different take on the cold.

SOT Logan Roe, Everblades Defensemen: "Its quite the shock. That's one of the perks playing here and even living here. You think of the nice weather usually all year long. I'm pretty thin skinned. I'm definitely not a fan of the cold weather, I'll take the sun anytime."

One thing we almost never see in Florida is winter clothes. But even a team that makes their living on the ice, opted to wear layers.

SOT Logan Roe, Everblades Defensemen: "You got to go through the closet and you got to scrap up something that you've probably stored away for a while."

SOT Martin Ouellette, Everblades Goalie: "I was wearing pants and a jacket to go outside. But I wouldn't call it cold."

SOT Brad Ralph, Everblades Head Coach: "I pulled out jeans and a sweater today, a pretty rare day. But I certainly have enough winter clothes to handle this weather."

On the ice tonight, the Blades host their heated rival, the Orlando Solar Bears. And the cold weather means fans won't have to adjust coming into the rink.

SOT Logan Roe, Everblades Defensemen: "Its probably a little warmer in here than it is outside, and it will definitely be an entertaining game."

"After the storm lots and lots of debris because the river hadn't been taken care of"

In the months since the storm, volunteers, the department of environmental protection and more recently the South Florida Water Managment district have sent crews to clear the snagging vegatation. Councilman Fred Forbes says he's in favor of making that permanent.

Fred Forbes/Bonita Springs Councilman

14:42:21-30

"You have to do a lot of things to reduced flooding in Bonita and keeping waterways clean is one of them"

The city is considering asking the South Florida Water Managment district to sign an agreement that would make them responsible for maintaing major waterways like the Imperial River, Oak Creek, and Spring Creek like they had in the 90s.

Fred Forbes/Bonita Springs Councilman

14:52:18-26

"This is one step in a group of a lot of steps that will take time and money to mak a serious dent"

The district has been clearing the Imperial for the last few weeks at a cost of nearly three quarters of a million dollars.and kayakers say they've noticed a huge difference.

Nick Paneo./Kayaker

15:05:51-56

"It looks remarkable different now as a matter of fact it the best I've seen it in a long time"

The agreement would likley mean an annual cleaning of the major waterways. This would help water flow more quickly to the gulf.

Grant Cornies/Bonita Springs

14:58;:15

"I think its a great thing what theyre talking about here"

Nick Paneo./Kayaker
