THE FRIGID AIR CAN HELP THE CROPS.

TAKE LOOKLIVE:

these signs are going up around the Naples zoo at exhibits where the animals simply can't handle the cold temperatures. Now zookeepers are preparing to keep the animals warm throughout the rest of the week.

FROM HUGE GIRAFES.

TO LITTLE COTTONTOP TAMARINS.

ITS CRUNCH TIME AT THE ZOO TO GET ALL OF THE ANIMALS READY FOR THE COLD.

Dr. Lizzie Arnett-Chinn

11:09

Whenever we have temperatures that really go below 60, we have to start worrying about some of our animals, especially our reptiles.:15 tz

MANY ANIMALS CAN ACTUALLY STAND THESE COLD TEMPERATURES. LIKE BEARS.

AND THE ZOO ADDS SPACE HEATERS. AND EXTRA HAY TO KEEP THEM WARM.

BUT OTHERS HAVE TO BE MOVED INSIDE. WHERE ITS MUCH WARMER.

DR LIZZIE 12:58

Every animal that comes here, we know what their optimum temperature are and depending on how cold it gets, depends on how we manage them. 13:03 tz

EVEN WITH THE LOW TEMPERATURES. WE FOUND PLENTY OF FAMILIES BUNDLED UP.

AND BRAVING THE COLD TO SEE THE ANIMALS.

very few other activities that you can do right now but you can always come to the zoo.:39 tz See all the animals. Get some nice exercise and have a good time.:44

ONE OF THE ZOO'S NEWEST AND MOST POPULAR EXHIBITS. IS THE PENGUIN EXHIBIT.

BUT DESPITE WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK. THESE *AFRICAN* PENGUINS DON'T LIKE THE COLDER TEMPERATURES.

Michael Sullivan

Penguin keeper

6:17

We get that a lot that this cold weather is good for our penguins. That's not the case though because we have African penguins.:23

ZOOKEEPERS KEEP THIS PENGUIN EXHIBIT CLIMATE CONTROLLED. BETWEEN 65 AND 70 DEGREES.

THE PENGUINS HAVE THEIR OWN PERSONAL SPACE HEATER. TO KEEP THEM WARM.

AND THE ZOO KEEPERS ARE WORKING HARD TO MAKE SURE EVERY ANIMAL IS COMFORTABLE.

DR LIZZIE

13:57

There's definitely a lot of talking that goes into it and then the keepers implement what we decided needs to happen. 14:03

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-ON CAM

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

VERY CHILLY WEATHER CONTINUES

Temperatures averaged 10 to 15 degrees below normal today and we will continue that trend again tonight. Skies will be mostly cloudy this evening and the wind will be gusty from the north throughout the night. A few, very isolated, showers are possible as we start the day on Wednesday as an area of low pressure crosses the state. The temperatures are chilly and will stay below normal for the next 3 to 4 days.

The aforementioned low pressure area could even scare up a few flakes of snow on Wednesday, but this would be well north of Orlando. if it occurs. A few showers of rain will make for a gray and dreary day on Wednesday.

This cold snap will continue for the rest of week. By Friday morning we will run a good chance of widespread 30's for morning low temperatures. For your forward planning, it might be a good idea to cover sensitive plants on Friday morning. Return to index of stories...
