Forecast: Cold settles in across Southwest Florida

Temperatures have dipped into the 30s in many parts of Southwest Florida Thursday morning. Gusty winds are making it feel even colder, in some cases it could feel like it's in the 20s as you step out the door. Gloves and hats are a good idea if you're outside early in the day as the wind will make you feel cold fairly quickly.

Once the sun comes up we'll see a quick warm up to more reasonable temperatures, but it will still be in the 40s until around 11 a.m. We are going to struggle to get above 60 degrees today and many areas won't get there. Expect upper 50s to right at 60 degrees in the mid afternoon with plenty of sunshine.

Winds will die down tonight which will take away the wind chill issue but should also allow our actual air temperatures to get a little bit colder! Most areas will wake up in the 30s again on Friday with freezing temperatures possible in DeSoto, Glades, and Hendry counties. It will be sunny again on Friday but highs will only be a degree or two warmer than today.

The weekend brings a change back to more normal weather. It will still be quite chilly in the mornings with more 30s on Saturday and 40s on Sunday. Sunday will also see us warm to the 70s again in the afternoon for the first time in almost a week!

For next week, we are tracking another front that could bring some showers to the area, but should not bring anything close to the cold conditions that we're experiencing now. Return to index of stories...

FROM FLORIDA TO MAINE -- MORE THAN 60 MILLION AMERICANS ARE FACING THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER.

MOS: It's amazing. I've never seen this much snow here.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, GOT IT'S FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL SINCE 1989 -- NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA GOT MORE THAN FIVE INCHES OF SNOW.

EVERY EAST COAST STATE FROM MAINE TO FLORIDA IS UNDER SOME TYPE OF WINTER STORM WATCH, OR WARNING, AND METEOROLOGISTS EXPECT IT TO STAY THAT WAY FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. AUTHORITIES ARE URGING RESIDENTS TO STAY INSIDE.

Deputy Chief Russell Wells / Jasper Co. Emergency Services: If you don't have a reason to be out, don't be out.

THE NORTHEAST MAY SEE SIX TO TWELVE INCHES OF SNOW, ALONG WITH HURRICANE FORCE WINDS TODAY, THANKS TO A "BOMBOGENESIS," OR AREA OF RAPIDLY DECLINING LOW AIR PRESSURE. IN FACT, SOME AREAS COULD SEE WIND SPEEDS HIGHER THAN HURRICANE SANDY.

MOS: You always worry when there's a lot of wind blowing that the trees are going to come down.

Kathryn Garcia / NYC Sanitation Commissioner: We're going to have exceptionally strong winds, so anything that is falling in these cold temperatures is likely to blow around and drift.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, PARTS OF THE NORTHEAST WILL BE COLDER THAN MARS.

Gov. Charlie Baker / Massachusetts: The forecast predicts single digit temperatures to move in on Friday. That means the snow from the storm will freeze quickly and bitter cold temperatures will return.

THE COLORADO RIVER IS A MAJOR SOURCE OF WATER FOR MILLIONS. BUT IT COULD BE IN TROUBLE DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND INCREASING DEMAND FOR WATER.

GARY STRIEKER REPORTS ON HOW CONSERVATION IN THE UPPER REACHES OF THE COLORADO OFFERS SOME HOPE FOR SAVING THE RIVER. Return to index of stories...

colorado river climate change-PKG

BEFORE THE COLORADO RIVER PASSES THROUGH THE GRAND CANYON, SEVEN STATES AND MEXICO, IT STARTS HERE IN NORTH CENTRAL COLORADO, SUPPLIED BY SNOW MELTING IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS.

DOWNSTREAM, CLIMATE CHANGE AND INCREASING DEMAND FOR WATER IS DEPLETING THE RIVER, AND IN THIS UPPER BASIN FARMERS ARE FINDING WAYS TO USE LESS WATER FOR THEIR ESSENTIAL IRRIGATION AND TO RETURN MORE WATER TO THE TRIBUTARIES THAT FEED THE COLORADO.

"so kind of the basic premise around irrigation efficiency is to divert the amount of water that you need, so that you're not wasting water, and that we can leave water in the system for other users."

REPLACING THE OLD SYSTEM OF FLOOD IRRIGATION WITH SPRINKLERS IS A MAJOR CONSERVATION IMPROVEMENT.

LIKE LEAVING YOUR LAWN SPRINKLERS RUNNING OVERNIGHT, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO IRRIGATE MORE THAN CROPS NEED.

"this system here is well over a hundred years old"

"so inside this tube is a pressure tranducer, and it senses the depth of water."

NEW TECHNOLOGY NOW HELPS TO MINIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF WATER TAKEN FROM RIVERS INTO IRRIGATION CANALS.

"it'll tell you how much water is running down this ditch… so this kind of technology gives us that real-time data so that we can watch it 24-7."

40 MILLION PEOPLE, IN AGRICULTURAL AREAS AND IN MAJOR CITIES LIKE PHOENIX, LAS VEGAS AND LOS ANGELES, DEPEND ON THE COLORADO'S WATER SUPPLY.

DOWNSTREAM FROM HERE, ALONG THE ENTIRE COURSE OF THE COLORADO, THERE'S A GROWING UNDERSTANDING OF THE VALUE OF WATER, THAT THE RIVER IS IN DANGER OF DRYING UP, AND THAT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO SAVE THE RIVER'S FLOW, AND TO SHARE ITS WATER SUSTAINABLY.

"I'll just give you a quick tour."

FROM SPINNERS, TO BUTTONS, WHEELS TO ZIPPERS. NORTHWOODS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S SENSORY "ZEN" ROOM HAS NOW COME TOGETHER.

"Our kids needed this in our building and so we just kind of put things together and said let's do sensory, different types of tools so we can work with our kids. This is what we came up with and it's been a success."

SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSISTANT CHERYL MOSS WAS AWARDED A GOLDEN APPLE AWARD IN FEBRUARY. GRANT MONEY GIVEN TO PUT TOWARD WHATEVER SHE WANTED.

"So many of our children learn in such different ways. I talked to a few different people about what's important and what do we need."

SO MOSS DECIDED ON A SENSORY ROOM. TO HELP KIDS TAKE A BREAK AND RESET DURING THEIR DAY.

"We have the trampolines, some kids really need to jump and just to let their emotions out. There are a lot of times where kids get so frustrated and they can't move on or they're stuck and sometimes they just need a place to go where they can just unwind a little bit and this is the place."

RIGHT NOW. ABOUT 10-15 STUDENTS USE THE ROOM PER DAY.

ORIGINALLY THE ROOM WAS MEANT FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS. BUT TEACHERS SAY IT'S A ROOM ALL STUDENTS CAN BENEFIT FROM.

"Kids that just need to take a 5 minute break because they're too fidgety or they just need a few minutes to compose themselves. Rooms like this can help kids calm down and get the time they need to really get the education that they're supposed to be getting." Return to index of stories...
