FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

Forecast: Chilly start to the weekend

It will be a rather cold start by Florida standards this morning with lows anywhere from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees. Winds are beginning to turn out of the east across Southwest Florida which will keep our temperatures from reaching freezing in many areas. While the winds will help keep the freeze and frost away you'll feel a bit of wind chill if you're out early this morning.

As we go through the day it will remain breezy under mostly sunny skies. most areas should get to around 60 degrees this afternoon. It will be another chilly night as we head into Saturday with calmer winds allowing temperatures closer to the coast to get back down into the 30s. A bit of cloud cover by early morning should limit our temperature potential, but it still should be one of the colder nights we've had in the past few years.

Conditions warm considerably for the rest of the weekend with highs in the mid 60s Saturday afternoon and in the 70s Sunday afternoon. We'll wake up in the 40s Sunday morning.

No rain is in the forecast for the weekend, but by Tuesday morning a weak cold front will bring us a chance for showers. The warming trend continues next week with highs near 80 degrees possible. Return to index of stories...

BITTER COLD EAST COAST-2SHOT

IF YOU THINK THE COLD IS BAD HERE, MANY AREAS IN THE NORTHEAST ARE COVERED IN SNOW, WITH SOME PLACES FEELING NEGATIVE 40-DEGREE WEATHER THIS WEEKEND.

AND THE TEMPERATURES ARE ONLY GOING TO DROP FROM THERE.

YON POMRENZE REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BITTER COLD EAST COAST-PKG

Gov. Andrew Cuomo / New York: The frigid temperature is an issue.

Gov. Dan Malloy / Connecticut: Bitter cold temperatures will continue.

OFFICIALS ACROSS THE NORTHEAST ARE WARNING RESIDENTS, THAT EVEN AFTER THE SNOW, THE WIND, AND FLOODING THAT TURNED SOME STREETS IN CITIES ALONG THE MASSACHUSETTS AND NEW HAMPSHIRE COASTLINE INTO RIVERS OF ICE -- IT IS GOING TO GET COLDER.

Mayor Marty Walsh / Boston: This weekend is going to be dangerously cold. We're asking people other than going out to shovel we're asking that you stay inside as much as possible. If you do go outside, make sure you dress for the weather.

OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, THE BITTER ARCTIC AIR LEFT BEHIND AFTER THURSDAY'S MASSIVE STORM IS EXPECTED TO BRING RECORD-BREAKING LOW TEMPERATURES THROUGHOUT THE NORTHEAST, WITH WIND CHILLS MAKING IT FEEL WELL BELOW ZERO.

AND ALTHOUGH THE SNOW HAS STOPPED FALLING IN MOST AREAS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ARE STILL ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO STAY OFF THE ROADS

Gov. Andrew Cuomo / New York: If the temperature drops and we can't clear the snow and it turns in to black ice that's going to be an even more dangerous situation. So, please use extreme caution. If you do not have to be on the roads, you shouldn't be on the roads.

AND TO STAY AWAY FROM THE COASTS AND FLOODED ROADS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS FLOOD WATERS WILL BE SLOW TO RECEDE IN SOME AREAS AND MAY EVEN FREEZE IN PLACE.

FLORIDIANS AND FREEZING COLD-OC-VO

THE TEMPERATURE HERE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA IS PRETTY MILD COMPARED TO THE ARTIC CONDITIONS IN THE NORTH--

SO YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHY IT FEELS SO FRIGID HERE.

PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT LUCI TANN SAYS IT'S YOUR CAPILLARIES.

SHE SAYS THOSE SMALL BLOOD VESSELS OPEN UP TO RELEASE HEAT BECAUSE IT'S USUALLY HOT HERE.

WHEN THE WEATHER GETS COLD, THEY CONSTRICT TO KEEP THE WARM BLOOD INSIDE.

ALSO, YOUR BODY LOSES INSULATING FAT THAT KEEPS YOU WARM THE LONGER YOU'RE LIVING HERE--

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

MKP 1:44 these are the top to bottom views. These are the side to side views.

From top to bottom---and side to side—when it comes to breast cancer, doctors are looking at all angles to make sure they find it.

MKP 2:20 we want to look at the arm pits where the lymph nodes live, and we want to look at the most common areas.

Breast cancer can be detected in mammograms—a screening all women are encouraged to get every year, starting at age 40.

GAIL 4:39 the importance of having a mammogram every year is so that we can get to know your breast tissue and see what it looks like when you start coming and then every year after that we can see any subtle changes that might be concerning for a cancer developing.

But if women *don't get regular mammograms they take the risk of the cancer getting larger and possibly spreading to the lymph nodes.

STANDUP: the sooner doctors can find breast cancer, the better. It means less treatment, less cost, and a better recovery.

Annual mammograms are especially important for women who have a family history of breast cancer or who have breast implants.

GAIL 3:18 it does require some extra pictures because the implants displace the breast tissue, we have to take some extra pictures to try to push the implants out of the way and then pictures where we include the implants to make sure we get the entire margin of tissue.

Which is why it's important for women to do self-breast exams *and annual mammograms after the age of 40. An important screening that could be lifesaving. For Lee Health I'm Lindsey Morton. Return to index of stories...
