Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

t will be a rather cold start by Florida standards this morning with lows anywhere from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees. Winds are beginning to turn out of the east across Southwest Florida which will keep our temperatures from reaching freezing in many areas. While the winds will help keep the freeze and frost away you'll feel a bit of wind chill if you're out early this morning.

As we go through the day it will remain breezy under mostly sunny skies. most areas should get to around 60 degrees this afternoon. It will be another chilly night as we head into Saturday with calmer winds allowing temperatures closer to the coast to get back down into the 30s. A bit of cloud cover by early morning should limit our temperature potential, but it still should be one of the colder nights we've had in the past few years.

Conditions warm considerably for the rest of the weekend with highs in the mid 60s Saturday afternoon and in the 70s Sunday afternoon. We'll wake up in the 40s Sunday morning.

No rain is in the forecast for the weekend, but by Tuesday morning a weak cold front will bring us a chance for showers. The warming trend continues next week with highs near 80 degrees possible. Return to index of stories...

t will be a rather cold start by Florida standards this morning with lows anywhere from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees.

CITRUS AND VEGETABLE FARMERS AREN'T THE ONLY GROWERS WORRIED ABOUT THEIR CROPS IN THE COLD.

ANOTHER SOUTHWEST FLORIDA STAPLE IS ALSO AT RISK

PALM TREE NURSERIES HAVE BEEN WORKING THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, USING IRRIGATION SYSTEMS TO COVER THEIR TREES IN WATER.

THIS KEEPS THE TREES AT A STEADY TEMPERATURE, AND PREVENTS THEM FROM FREEZING IF IT GETS BELOW 32 DEGREES.

BUT THIS STRATEGY ONLY WORKS IF DONE PROPERLY.

IT REQUIRES THE CONSTANT FLOW OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE NIGHT--
