Footstep nat

When Justin sorrels walked though his orange groves this morning, he felt a sense of relief.

16:01:29-34

"With Mother Nature you never know, But yes we hope we survived type worst of it"

A bad freeze could level his oranges. And after suffering crop loss from hurricane Irma, he wasn't looking forward to this cold snap.

15:50:02-13**

"Irma definitely caused some concern which makes the cold even more of a concern that if it was bad we have to do weveything we can do to save what fruit we have left"

For the first time in 2 years, they sprayed water overnight to keep the oranges from freezing.

15:53:25-36

"It can warm the grove as much as 2 to 4 degrees and that's enough to keep it warm enough to protect the trees thats our only line of defense "

Devin stand up

"Protecting these plants isn't cheap. They have more than 6,000 acres. They have to use diesel fuel all night to power the sprinklers. But Sorrells says that's a necessary precaution."

15:509:02-11

"We only grow one crop a year so anything that affects that crop like a hurricane or freeze impacts us as a company and family"

His crops made it through the night unscathed. He says the cold weather results in sweeter oranges. And because it's been so warm, some of his trees almost boomed early.so the chill put an end to that as well.

15:56:25-34

"The problem with blooming this early is you end up with multiple blooms. Multiple size oranges on the tree that just makes it tough when it comes to harvesting Return to index of stories...

US-41 HERE NEAR DOWNTOWN NAPLES IS VERY BUSY FOR TRAFFIC.

NAPLES US 41 LANE REDUCTION-PKG

SEASON IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA MEANS TRAFFIC.

US-41 near downtown Naples is no exception.

2855 as it is during the season it's pretty bad anyhow even during the day it's backed up now

there's an idea brewing to remove 2 of the 6 lanes of traffic on US 41. roughly in this area. from 7th avenue north to 5th avenue south.

2040 the point is to give people an alternative way to move around downtown

There's a Downtown Naples Mobility & Connectivity study that's been in the works to figure out how to better connect the bustling downtown areas of Naples.

Some say to do that. the city needs to make getting around on foot or bike in this area of downtown MORE OF A PRIORITY.

2240 the sidewalk is right next to the street people are going 45, 50 miles an hour and people don't feel safe

2850 I wouldn't be for the idea I think traffic would get terribly backed up around here

3320 it's getting worse and worse every year, and to eliminate one lane I think it's going to be a disaster

Those working on the connectivity study say that shouldn't be a problem.

2210 it won't make them go slower it will make them go 30 miles an hour instead of 45 or 50 which adds to the amount of danger there is when crossing that street Return to index of stories...

NAPLES US 41 LANE REDUCTION-LIVE

US-41 is a state highway.

So how would the city be able to change it?

Well. the Florida Department of Transportation is already working on a stormwater improvement project on this chunk of 41. so they plan to tear it up in the next 5 years anyway.

So FDOT gave the City of Naples the opportunity to redesign what gets replaced.

2018 IS OFF TO A PRETTY SICK START.

THE C-D-C REPORTS *46* STATES -- SEEN HERE IN BROWN -- HAVE WIDESPREAD FLU ACTIVITY!

"It was over the weekend that we recognized that our volume was increasing."

NORTH OF SAN DIEGO -- EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTORS SET UP A SPECIAL TENT OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL TO HANDLE A SURGE IN FLU PATIENTS.

THE LAST TIME THEY NEEDED AN EXTENDED TREATMENT AREA -- WAS DURING THE 2009 FLU PANDEMIC!

"I'm concerned that this one may hit us hard."

SO FAR -- 41-THOUSAND CASES NATIONWIDE THIS SEASON!

"Our transport numbers have never been higher."

THE FLU CAN BE DEADLY. ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WITH UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS.

"Baby came in with some respiratory problems."

THOSE PATIENTS TRULY NEED EMERGENCY CARE.

BUT MOST PEOPLE WITH THE FLU WILL RECOVER WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATIONS.

"These patients could truly stay home and seek medical attention with their primary care physician instead of rushing to the emergency department."

THE FLU VACCINE IS NOT AS EFFECTIVE THIS YEAR -- BUT EXPERTS SAY SOME PROTECTION IS BETTER THAN NONE.

"Even if you get sick having had the vaccine, your illness tends to be milder - not quite as severe."

THE VACCINE ALSO LESSENS THE CHANCE OF GETTING COMPLICATIONS FROM THE FLU -- LIKE PNEUMONIA.
