TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CTR, WX WALL

If you've had enough of the chilly weather, a return to more normal conditions is on the horizon for Southwest Florida. We are going to start the day again in the mid to upper 30s inland with upper 30s to low 40s along the coast. Light to moderate winds from the north will add a little bite to the temperatures again this morning meaning it will feel like the 30s up until between 9 and 10 a.m.

A few high cirrus clouds will streak across the state today, but that shouldn't impact us too much with plentiful sunshine otherwise. Temperatures will get a little warmer today, reaching the mid 60s for most. It's still about 10 degrees below average, but the signs of warming are there. The chill further weakens tonight with only a few scattered upper 30s inland and mid 40s along the coast. Highs on Sunday will be near 70 degrees under sunny skies.

Next week will be another change as temperatures shoot to a few degrees above average starting on Monday. Highs will be in the upper 70s as a developing system brings more humid air and a chance for showers in our region Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will remain warm with numerous clouds as the weather pattern across Florida remains unsettled into next weekend. Return to index of stories...

"They are still out in the water!! they're still in the water! Finding shells."

AUTHORITIES SETTING UP THESE SIGNS NEAR THE WATER WARNING OF HIGH BACTERIA LEVELS.

DURING ROUTINE TESTING FRIDAY, OFFICIALS FOUND UNSAFE LEVELS OF A BACTERIA THAT CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF DISEASE.

EXPERTS SAY IT COULD BE A GASTRO NIGHTMARE LEADING TO STOMACH PAIN AND DIARRHEA.

"We told them that there are signs down there but they don't listen."

HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THE TYPE OF BACTERIA COLLECTED IS NORMALLY FOUND IN THE INTESTINAL TRACT.

THE HIGH LEVELS MEAN IT COULD HAVE COME FROM STORM WATER RUNOFF OR SEWAGE.

"It tells you you can get sick, it tells you not to touch the water."

BLAKE GLUPKER SAW THE SIGNS.

HEALTH MATTERS PKG-2SHOT

WHEN YOU NEED MEDICAL CARE AND YOUR INJURY OR ILLNESS CAN'T WAIT.

WHERE SHOULD YOU GO?

THERE'S PLENTY OF OPTIONS LIKE GOING TO A WALK-IN MEDICAL CLINIC OR THE EMERGENCY ROOM.

LINDSEY MORTON EXPLAINS YOUR BEST OPTION ON TODAY'S HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS PKG-PKG

NATS OF AMBULANCE

There are many health conditions that need emergency care.

Dr. Calkins 1:41 generally we tell people to go to the emergency department for things like chest pain,

anything that's concerning the heart-- Any kind of stroke-like symptoms, weakness or numbness on one

arm, one leg, difficulty speech those kinds of things.

But for non-life threatening injuries and illnesses—doctors say that's when patients should come here,

to a walk-in medical clinic.

Dr. Calkins 3:19 we handle things like bronchitis, cough and congestion, sinus infections, pink eye,

urinary infections, minor injuries like broken bones we will do, as long as they aren't through the skin.

STANDUP: The walk-in medical clinics are beneficial to the patient and hospital. Patients who need

things like blood work, x-rays, or stitches for minor injuries can come here freeing up space for patients in need of more emergency care at the hospital.

1:19 we have one kind of close to all to our hospitals now in the area and it kind of helps people who

don't actually need to been seen in the emergency department get seen quicker, treated faster.

These clinics are open seven days a week-- -and are a great option for adults and children to receive

prompt medical care for minor emergencies and illnesses.

4:40 I think it's definitely a good option.

Providing safe options for care for life's major and minor emergencies

For Lee Health I'm Lindsey Morton.

STANDUP: All four Lee Health hospitals have a walk-in medical clinic nearby. If patients come here

and doctors feel they need emergency care, health experts can

get them safely and quickly to the emergency department. Return to index of stories...

WHILE WE DEAL WITH WAITING FOR CRAWFISH --

AND SLOWING INDUSTRY WITH THE COLD SNAP --

THERE'S ANOTHER QUESTION YOU MAY HAVE ASKED YOURSEFL DURING THESE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS.

WHY IS IT THAT THESE RELATIVELY MILD TEMPERATURES FEEL SO FRIGID TO FLORIDIANS?

PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT LUCI TANN SAYS IT HAS TO DEAL WITH YOUR CAPILLARIES.

SHE SAYS BECAUSE IT'S NORMALLY SO HOT HERE, THOSE SMALL BLOOD VESSELS OPEN UP TO RELEASE HEAT.

SO WHEN THE WEATHER GETS COLD THEY CONSTRICT TO KEEP THE WARM BLOOD INSIDE.

BUT IT TAKES TIME FOR YOUR BODIES CIRCULATION TO ADJUST.

IN ADDITION THE LONGER YOU LIVE IN FLORIDA, YOUR BODY WILL LOSE INSULATING FAT THAT KEEPS YOU WARM.

SO WHEN IT GETS CHILLY- WE'RE MORE SENSITIVE. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

COLD MOSQUITOES-OC, VO

THE COLD WEATHER DOES NOT GIVE US THE ALL CLEAR FROM MOSQUITOES EITHER.

THE CONTROL DISTRICT SAYS IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES TO START KILLING OFF THE ADULT INSECTS--

WHILE THEIR EGGS LIE DORMANT.

BECAUSE MOSQUITOES ARE LESS ACTIVE IN COLD, WINDY WEATHER--

THIS MEANS THE DISTRICT IS SPRAYING LESS.

THE LAST TIME AREAS IN LEE COUNTY WERE SPRAYED WAS NEARLY A WEEK AGO.

BUT THE DISTRICT MONITORS POPULATIONS YEAR ROUND. Return to index of stories...
