"I hate it. i don't think it's fair to the consumers and to people that have to travel."

LORRAINE HENRY SPEAKS FOR LOTS OF AIRLINE TRAVELERS STUCK WITH PAYING EXTRA FOR THEIR CHECKED LUGGAGE.

LORRAINE IS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER THAT TEACHES AT SEWING EXPOS AROUND THE COUNTRY.

"probably about a third of the year, i'm gone."

AND THAT MEANS CHECKING TWO BAGS ON EVERY FLIGHT.

IF LORRAINE HAD TO PAY FOR THOSE BAGS.

"I'm talking 15-hundred a year just in baggage fees."

TRAVELERS ARE FINDING WAYS TO CUT DOWN OR SKIP THOSE FEES.

FIRST OFF, FREELOAD ON THE FREEBIES.

CHILD CAR SEATS AND STROLLERS ARE CHECKED FOR FREE.

BEFORE YOU ZIP THEM UP IN THEIR TRAVEL BAGS, PACK SOME ITEMS INSIDE.

DON'T PAY FOR OVERWEIGHT BAGS.

PACK YOUR HEAVIEST ITEMS IN YOUR CARRY ON.

THAT WAY YOU CAN PACK MORE IN CHECKED BAGS WITHOUT GOING OVER THE 50 POUND LIMIT.

"you'd be surprised at what lengths i go to on my carry-on."

TRY WEARING YOUR LUGGAGE.

IF YOU HAVE A JACKET WITH MULTIPLE POCKETS, PACK THOSE FULL AND WEAR THE JACKET.

YOU CAN STOW IT ONCE YOU SETTLE IN.

BOOK TICKETS WITH AN AIRLINE CREDIT CARD.

MANY CARRIERS WILL WAIVE BAGGAGE FEES FOR AIRLINE CARDHOLDERS AND THEIR COMPANIONS.

"if you put in lots of miles like lorraine henry, try to reach the airline miles level that offers free bags.

in lorraine's case that means going 50-thousand miles every year."

"if i have to have more then i will throw in an extra trip somewhere to get those miles."

FINALLY, CONSIDER FLYING A HIGHER CLASS THAT WAIVES BAGGAGE FEES.

THIS MAY SOUND CRAZY BUT IF YOU EXPECT TO BRING A LOT OF BAGS, FLYING FIRST CLASS MIGHT BE THE SAME PRICE AS FLYING COACH AND PAYING FOR ALL OF YOUR LUGGAGE.

BAGGAGE FEES ADD UP FOR EVERY PASSENGER.

FINDING WAYS TO FLY AND SAVE A FEW BUCKS CAN MEAN MORE MONEY FOR YOUR TRIP. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXCTR WXWALL

ANCHOR AD LIB WX INTRO

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's going to be a wet and cloudy start to the day for parts of Southwest Florida, so you'll want the umbrella as you're heading out this morning.

A low spinning in the Gulf will bring in some areas of light to moderate rain today, which will move from south to north this morning, and some of this rain will linger through the afternoon and evening.

Rain amounts will generally stay below a quarter inch, and the chance for thunderstorms will be relatively low.

Clouds will be plentiful again today, but some of us should manage to see some sun mixing in with the clouds this afternoon.

Even with some rain and clouds in our forecast today, temperatures will warm into the upper 70s, and some places may get up to 80 degrees depending on how much sunshine breaks through later today.

Wednesday and Thursday will start on the cloudy side with some areas of fog also forming early in the day, but sunshine will become more prevalent by the afternoon.

Daytime highs both days will reach the lowers 80s , and overnight lows will only cool into the mid 60s.

Another strong cold front will sweep through Southwest Florida late Friday into Saturday morning.

The front will be gone by Saturday, leaving us with sunny but chilly weather this weekend.

Afternoon highs this weekend will struggle to get out of the 60s, and there's a good chance temperatures will fall into the upper 40s by Sunday morning.

A few areas of scattered rain will also be possible Friday as the front makes its way through the area, but rain chances will only be around 30%. Return to index of stories...

SPENDING ANY TIME IN THE EXTREME COLD CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE.

NATALIA CORIA SAYS WHEN SHE STEPPED OUTSIDE THIS MORNING, SHE FELT LIKE SHE COULDN'T BREATHE.AND SHE'S NOT ALONE.

"It was really cold and I couldn't breathe because I'm not from here, I'm from Miami."

"If we breathe through our mouth or we are exposed to very cold weather or for prolonged periods of time, the actual air can go straight, cold as it is, into our bronchi and then we can actually see symptoms of an asthmatic. We can actually see constriction."

DOCTOR HECTOR CAJIGAS IS A PULMONOGIST ATT NORTHWESTER HOSPITAL.

"Our body tries to warm and humidify the air that we inhale. When it gets cold, that body tries to do the same but it has more difficulties because the air is definitely cold and it's dry air."

DOCTOR CAJIGAS SAYS IT'S IMPORTANT TO TRY AND WARM THE AIR WHEN YOU'RE OUTSIDE.

HIS ADVICE: WEAR A SCARF. BECAUSE IT CAN HELP WARM THE AIR THAT YOU'RE BREATHING.

"So we don't breathe that air straight into our system."

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF IN THIS EXTREMELY COLD AIR, COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE WITH THE SCARF, MONITOR AIR QUALITY FORECASTS, KEEP MEDICATIONS CLOSE IF YOU DO HAVE ASTHMA OR BRONCHITIS AND ALSO AVOID WOOD BURNING FIRE PLACES.

"The biofuel when it is burnt, that ash that comes out of that actually can be small enough that we don't see it and we can actually inhale it." Return to index of stories...

THE NORTH KOREAN DELEGATION WALKING ACROSS THE THE WORLD'S MOST MILITARIZED BORDER.

AND THEN MAKING HISTORY WITH A HANDSHAKE.

A MEETING UNTHINKABLE JUST A MONTH AGO, AS MINISTERS FROM NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA SAT DOWN FOR HOURS OF TALKS.

BOTH CLAIMING THEY'RE COMMITTED TO REDUCING TENSIONS.

"THE NORTH KOREANS, WHO COME FROM THE MOST SECRETIVE COUNTRY ON EARTH, TRIED TO WRONG FOOT THE SOUTH RIGHT FROM THE START, SUGGESTING THESE TALKS SHOULD BE LIVE STREAMED ON TV, SO THE WHOLE WORLD COULD WATCH. THE DELEGATION LEADER FROM THE FREE AND OPEN SOUTH, SAID 'NO'."

BUT HE ALSO SAID THE NORTH SHOULD STOP PROVOCATIVE ACTS AND GET RID OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

THE NORTH KOREAN DIDN'T RESPOND TO THAT.

BUT ANNOUNCED THEY WILL SEND A TEAM TO NEXT MONTH'S OLYMPICS IN SOUTH KOREA.

THE GAMES WILL BE THE NORTH'S FIRST IN EIGHT YEARS.

THE TWO SIDES HAVE ALSO RE-ESTABLISHED A SECOND HOTLINE, THIS ONE FOR THE MILITARY.

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT HOW MUCH TIME YOUR CHILD SPENDS IN FRONT OF SCREENS?

SO ARE SOME OF APPLE'S BIGGEST INVESTORS, WHO HAVE ISSUED A NEW WARNING.

URGING THE TECH GIANT TO TAKE ACTION NOW TO PREVENT SMARTPHONE ADDICTION IN OUR CHILDREN.

NBC'S STEPHANIE GOSK HAS THE DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

IPHONE ADDICITON-PKG

It's one of today's most troubling questions for parents.

snapchat, youtube, instagram.

is all this time on smartphones bad for our kids?

sot michael rich

MR: / in many many ways, we're seeing increases in anxiety, increases in depression. Certainly increases in sleep deprivation because they're staying up late at night texting each other.

Now two large shareholders say Apple, the company that invented the iphone,

needs to step up to help solve the problem.

In a letter to Apple's board of directors the investors wrote in part

It is both unrealistic and a poor long-term business strategy to ask parents to fight this battle alone

The letter asks Apple to help develop better apps for parents that limit time and content on their children's phone.and support research into the impact of screentime on children's mental health.

The numbers are startling.

50% of teens say they are addicted to their devices.

And according to one study, 8th graders who spend lots of time on social media have a 27% higher risk of depression

A year ago we had a group of teens track their daily phone time.

NAT: Six hours and thirty minutes

NAT: Four hours and twenty six minutes

NAT: i'm over nine hours.

We asked those same kids to give up their phones for a week.

NAT: I'm already really bored

NAT: It kind of sucks

but then something interesting.

I guess I should not go on the phone that much

SG: Did anyone else feel anything similar?

SG: Almost everyone nodded

I went to dinner with my family/and we really talked the whole time it was nice

Giving up phones entirely is of course not realistic.but being smarter about smartphones is something parents and now perhaps Apple itself cannot ignore Return to index of stories...
