FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXCTR WXWALL

ANCHOR AD LIB WX INTRO

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Forecast: Thick fog and mild temperatures

The fog that was patchy yesterday has morphed into pea-soup this morning across most, if not all of Southwest Florida. Take care on area roads as limited visibility will stick around most of the morning. Expect some improvement in conditions by lunchtime. Morning temperatures will be in the mid 60s rising to the low 70s. Normally we start the day off in the 50s in early January.

Once the fog and low clouds break up later today don't expect tons of sunshine, rather partly to mostly cloudy skies. A system wheeling around the southern tip of Florida will keep things cloudy and bring showers and storms to the Miami area this afternoon. A few showers could drift into interior parts of Southwest Florida, but activity on our coast today will be sparse with rain chances at 20 percent or less today. Despite the clouds the warm and humid air across our region will give us a shot at the first 80 degree afternoon of 2018 today.

The mild weather will continue for the rest of the work week with more fog impacting the morning drive time. A cold front will approach the area on Friday and give us a chance for a few showers with cloudy conditions.

Once the front passes Friday night we'll see a big swing back to cooler weather for the weekend. Lows will drop to the middle and upper 40s with highs in the 60s and low 70s. The cooler, drier air will give us plenty of sunshine though for weekend activities.

Conditions for early next week look dry with cool to average temperatures. Return to index of stories...

These Russian women all came to Miami to give birth.

As a result, their babies are American citizens.

That's right: Russian mothers; American babies.

SOT OLESIA I am such the type of mom who want to give her child the best what I can do.

And "the best" is an American passport. To give birth in Miami- a status symbol back in Russian. While the practice is controversial, it's perfectly legal. The 14th amendment to the constitution makes Anyone born on American soil an American citizen.

SOT OLESIA: American passport is a big plus for the baby, why not?

AMONG THE PLUSES. THESE KIDS WILL HAVE the right live and work hereâ?¦. receive social services and when they turn 21 â?¦ they will have the right to sponsor their parents for an American green card.

WE'RE THE Only PLACE, JUST ABOUT, THAT IS STUPID ENOUGH TO DO IT.

As a CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP called for an end to birth right citizenship, declaring it the "biggest magnet for illegal immigration"

TODD: /you want to get rid of birth right citizenship.

TRUMP: You have to get rid of it. Yes. You have to. What they're doing -- they're having a baby and all of a sudden nobody knows -- the baby is here

TODD: You believe --

TRUMP: You have no choice. You have no choice.

But IRONICALLY CONDO BUILDINGS BEARING THE NAME TRUMP ARE AMONG THE MOST POPULAR FOR RUSSIAN BIRTH TOURISTS.

WEIGHT LOSS WARNING-OC

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WILL SET OUT TO LOSE WEIGHT THIS MONTH AS PART OF THEIR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS-

BIANCA CASTRO REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

WEIGHT LOSS WARNING-PKG

--PKG--

AT THE START OF THE NEW YEAR DOCTORS HEAR A LOT OF THIS.

"Doctor I've gotta lose some weight."

AND WHILE IT'S A GREAT RESOLUTION, DOCTOR HUJEFA VORA SAYS THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE THAT YOU SHOULD PRIORITIZE FIRST AND THAT'S YOUR BASELINE HEALTH.

"They need to focus on making sure they see their doctor, getting an annual exam and getting their annual health screenings done."

START THE YEAR OFF BY GETTING BLOODWORK DONE TO LEARN YOUR NUMBERS LIKE YOUR GLUCOSE LEVEL, WHICH COULD REVEAL YOUR RISK OF DIABETES.

KNOW WHAT YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS ARE.

AND IF YOU'RE OVER THE AGE OF 40, DOCTOR VORA RECOMMENDS GETTING YOUR HEART AND LUNGS CHECKED OUT.

"It's important to think of things like getting an EKG done, getting a stress test done, getting pulmonary function testing done to make sure your heart and your lungs can handle any rigorous exercise program that you might put yourself on."

HE SAYS A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION TO GET THE RIGHT SCREENING DONE WILL SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS AS YOU TACKLE OTHER RESOLUTIONS LIKE WORKING OUT AND EATING RIGHT.

"The last thing you want to do is fail because you had great intentions but your body couldn't keep up with what you wanted it to do." Return to index of stories...

BRAIN CANCER SURVIVAL-OC

HEARING THAT YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS CANCER IS SCARY AND CAN BE DEVASTING, ESPECIALLY IF THE DOCTOR SAYS ITS BRAIN CANCER.

WITHIN DAYS OF DOCTORS TELLING HER IN APRIL 2011 SHE HAD GLIOBLASTOMA, MAUREEN PIEKANSKI UNDERWENT AN OPERATION TO REMOVE THE MALIGNANT GRADE FOUR BRAIN TUMOR.

"So, I had the surgery at the end of April. I had chemo and radiation and then they said, okay we did everything we could do."

THE SURGERY WAS NO CURE AND THE PROGNOSIS SHE RECEIVED GOING FORWARD WAS GRIM.

"The best you can hope for is 15 months."

BUT THAT WAS BEFORE SHE FOUND OUT ABOUT A CLINICAL TRIAL FOR A TREATMENT SHE NOW KEEPS UNDER HER HAT.

"And I've got four of them on my head. One, two, three, four."

FOUR ELECTRODES ON HER SHAVED SCALP ARE PART OF A DEVICE CALLED OPTUNE.

"I had nothing to lose and the fact that it was non-invasive, it wasn't going to hurt me made it all the better and it was one of the few options."

OPTUNE CREATES AN ELECTRIC FIELD TO DISRUPT THE GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION OF CANCER CELLS IN THE BRAIN.

"I just know I don't feel it. I don't mind it. I'm used to it."

MAUREEN RECEIVED HER OPTUNE DEVICE A FEW MONTHS AFTER HER SURGERY.

HER HUSBAND, TED, HELPS PLACE THE ELECTRODES ON MAUREEN'S HEAD EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER SHE SHAVES HER SCALP.

"Patients who use the Optune device are urged to wear it at least 18 hours a day. In Maureen's case, she even uses it when she sleeps."

SINCE IT'S PORTABLE, SHE CAN TAKE IT WITH HER WHEREVER SHE GOES WHETHER IT'S VISITING HER GRANDCHILDREN OR EVEN TAKING A CRUISE.

WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING IT'S NOT A CURE, MAUREEN FIRMLY BELIEVES OPTUNE HAS GIVEN HER A NEW LEASE AND A NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE.

"I just would love people to believe like I've learned to that you can beat something. And I'm rare but I've been beating it for six years." Return to index of stories...
