NAACP press release on unveiling of first and only black county commissioner

teeon11@comcast.net

Attachments4:15 PM

to ABC7, Patricia, Simone, Florida, Fox, Channing, Britni, Melissa, NBC2, Wink, S

Parts of this were taken from an article titled Breaking Barriers in the 2/22/13 edition of Naples Daily News.

A portrait of Melvin Morgan, the first and only black Lee County Commissioner will be unveiled on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 12:00 PM at the Melvin Morgan Constitutional Complex Building, 2480 Thompson Street, Fort Myers - on the third floor.

Many visitors and workers going in and out of the Constitutional Complex Building in downtown Fort Myers ask "who is Melvin Morgan"?

'This is my home, I was born here,' said Melvin Morgan, the 1954 Dunbar High salutatorian. 'I'm one of the few natives you're going to find.'

Melvin was born in 1936, the first child of Phillip and Pearlina Smallwood. Her father gave her the unusual name for a girl. 'He had the name picked out because he wanted a son, and when he saw I was a girl, he still named me Melvin,' she said. 'And you know all through my life I still receive mail: Mr. Melvin Morgan.' Oh my goodness, but he kept the name Melvin and he never got that son. Just three girls.'

Her life revolved around school and church. Her parents, who had limited educations themselves, expected Melvin and her siblings to finish school. 'I was in school every day,' she said, 'perfect attendance.' She was a standout student and athlete. As a member of the Dunbar High girls' basketball team, she scored 63 points in one game, a record that people still know her for today. After graduation, her pastor at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Fort Myers helped her get into Allen University, in Columbia, S.C., which was affiliated with her African Methodist Episcopal faith.

In the 1960's a federal court ordered Lee County to integrate its schools.

Melvin was one of the first teachers to voluntarily leave her post at Dunbar High School to teach at a white elementary school. She said she bonded easily with her new students.'They fell in love with me, and I fell in love with them,' Melvin said.

At first, it was just black students who were plucked from their communities and bused to white schools.

Black schools, including Dunbar High School, closed indefinitely in 1969. Melvin worked as a mediator who explained the ins and outs of busing to parents in her community, which was not an easy task, she said. 'They wanted the children in their neighborhood,' Melvin said 'They wanted their children near them.'

Children in Dunbar could live right across the street from each other and still attend different schools because there were quotas to fill.

Mann, a state representative in 1983, remembered Melvin's leadership qualities and recommended her to Gov. Graham for a vacated Lee County Commission seat. 'He was very impressed with what he had heard about Melvin Morgan,' Mann said. If you went into a meeting where there was some negotiations going on or some barriers to overcome, you almost hoped Melvin Morgan was going to be there because you knew the process would be better if she was a part of it,' he said.

After receiving reassurances from her school's superintendent that she could have her old job back if things didn't work out for her on the board, she decided to go for it.

'Oh my goodness, the blacks were overjoyed,' she said.

Morgan said she started to study as much as possible because she knew she was being watched.

'I wasn't intimidated at all because I went in with the mindset you got to work and really work hard,' she said.

Melvin has seen Dunbar through segregation, integration and beyond. She has been a trailblazer, a role model and a local leader.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Forecast: Evening showers before a cool weekend

Weather this morning in Southwest Florida won't be that much different from the past few days. You'll head out the door to mild temperatures in the 60s with some areas of fog. A light breeze this morning should limit fog a bit more than the past couple of days.

The cold front we've been talking about for the past few days will arrive this evening after temperatures climb back to around 80 degrees in the early afternoon. Skies will be partly cloudy around lunchtime and progress to mostly cloudy by sunset. Expect late afternoon and early evening showers as the front passes over us.

The chillier air will take some time to filter in across our area so tonight will only see lows in the upper 50s and low 60s under cloudy skies. Clouds clear out on Saturday and we'll spend most of the day in the 60s. Windy weather is expected all weekend as the chillier air rushes in.

Temperatures will bottom out in the low to mid 40s Saturday night with a few inland locations briefly seeing the upper 30s. Highs will remain in the 60s on Sunday.

We'll warm up a few degrees on Monday and Tuesday and could even see some areas reach the low 70s but this warming trend will not last long. Another front is set to arrive in the middle of next week that will send temperatures back down to well below average. Pretty much all of this weekend and next week will be below our mid-January averages for temperatures. Return to index of stories...

ONE STORE IS IN THE TAMPA AREA.

DURING A MEETING LAST YEAR -- THE CHAIN'S C-E-O SAID THE RETAILER NEEDED TO "IMPROVE ITS COMPETITIVE POSITION."

A SPOKESPERSON FOR SAM'S CLUB SAYS SOME OF THE CLOSED STORES MAY BE CONVERTED TO E-COMMERCE FACILITIES.

IN SOME CASES, NEITHER CUSTOMERS NOR EMPLOYEES WERE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE OF THE STORES' CLOSING.

S/Customer :13

"Terribly surprised. The staff has been very helpful here and just the thought of the loss of Sam's here is just overwhelming."

S/Corey Gathers/Customer :10

"I'm totally shocked. This is where we go to get our food for our big family, so they normally have the best prices so for them to shut down is kind of a shock for us."

S/Corey Gathers/Customer :07

"I had no clue this was happening. I heard at the barber shop, so I came over here to see if it was true, and sure enough, nobody can get in."

WALMART HAS NOT OFFICIALLY COMMENTED ON THE SAM'S CLUB CLOSINGS.

BUT ISSUED A STATEMENT ON ITS @SAMSCLUB TWITTER ACCOUNT THAT READS:

"After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we've decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we're committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."

FIRST WEATHER-CHROMA

MANY NOW SAY INCORPORATION SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY WAY LEFT TO FIGHT.

STORY

A Lee County judge has dismissed the Matlacha Civic Association's lawsuit fighting the City of Cape Coral's annexation of land on Pine Island Road.

FOCUS

Judge Kyle dismissed the suit this week, on January 8th. I've requested the six -page document. The Matlacha Civic Association filed the suit one year ago today, January 11th, 2017.

I'm told Judge Kyle dismissed it based on the fact the Civic Association really had no standing, and was basing their argument over the fear of what Cape may do with the land.

People we talked with on the island today say they're disappointed. Even though there may not be a legal standing, they say their concerns should still be considered. Others say incorporation may now be the last option to fight this.

I've reached out to the president of the Matlacha Civic Association to find out they reaction and what the plan is now moving forward. I haven't heard back.

Also awaiting comment from the Cape.

055901 I think it's very unfortunate that we as people of Matlacha do not have a say in, even though it might not be a legal saying but they should still consider what we think about what's going on 5912

055930 I think it's unfortunate just because they own the land and they didn't disclose what they're going to do with the land suddenly there's nothing the judge can do about it 5939

055940 I think it was a mistake to dismiss it for sure 5943

060022 I'm not sure if there's anything we can do. I know that certain people would like to see Pine Island incorporated and maybe that could be something 0031

060048 I would just hope that they are not going to build something that would take away from our community here in Pine Island 0053

060101 hopefully this is not the end of it but if they're gonna do something just consider our residents here as well 0109

060122 it was very busy during Christmas and New Years and it slowed down right now but we're waiting, they're coming 0126

Megan Alcober, Matlacha

064102 I see the reason why people don't want the city of Cape Coral here. 4104

064114 i don't know if we had our own government here, if it would go the same way you know like it did in Bonita or Estero. 4121

064132 I'm strongly for incorporation. I honestly think the whole island--st James city, Bokeelia, there needs to be some kind of major an incorporation of the whole area 4144

064213 I think it kind of is time to kind of become our own city or incorporate in some sort 4217

064224 there's going to be cost to run the government. And that's going to have to be taken--they're going to have to think about how much it's going to cost 4234

SO HOW DO YOU BURN A PIZZA? AN AVERAGE PIZZA AT PESTO'S COOKS PRETTY QUICKLY. SOMETIMES IT COULD TAKE 6 MINUTES TO BAKE, OR IT CAN BE 2 MINUTES AND BURN.

"Basically we do everything by hand here. It's very difficult, we have a 600 degree oven that fluctuates so they get burnt"

WHAT'S THE SOLUTION? TOSSING THE PIZZA? PUTTING ON AN "I BURNED A PIZZA" SUIT AND WALKING THE PLANK.

"Well it was one way to remind all of us to try not to burn pizzas"

OL' SMOKEY HERE WAS THE FIRST TO PUT THE SUIT TO USE. BY SIMPLY NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO TIME, HE WAS CHATTING UP WITH HIS CO-WORKERS ENJOYING JUST ANOTHER DAY AT WORK.

"And then we will make them a new pizza. Of course we don't want to serve bad food, we would love to serve much better food than bad food"

SO WHY WALK THE PLANK? WELL, THIS HUT HAS A PIRATE THEME. A FUN INSIDE JOKE TO MAKE THE WORKPLACE ENJOYABLE.

"We're all good friends. We have a good time. It's very hard work, we all love it so if we can't be hard on each other then, you know we gotta have some fun around here its all in good fun"

PKG:

From the moment patients learn they have breast cancer-- -nurse navigators are there to guide them

through the next steps.

Tammy 2:53 nurse navigation plays a big role. BUTTED TO 2:59 we meet with patients one on one. We

do teaching with patients about their whole disease process.

STANDUP: Nurse Navigators work with patients throughout the cancer journey to connect them to the

right emotional, medical, spiritual, and financial resources.

LYNN 4:20 It really helped to have a nurse navigator to coordinate everything.

Lynn Lawrence was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and was immediately assigned a navigator.

LYNN 1:21 I've been helped all along the way.

All work closely with breast cancer patients to help them manage their treatment side effects and

understand their treatment options.

LYNN 3:50 it's not just education, it's also the calls. They made appointments for me, kept me up to

date. They're such an overload of information and everything seems to go so fast that they help

coordinate everything.

If a patient needs surgery, the navigators help to prepare them for the procedure—educating them on

limitations and what to expect after surgery.

Liz 4:15 I think just comfort level, just relieving stress, and just knowing that they have another contact

person in case of an emergency.

Throughout their breast cancer journey, patients have a guide to answer questions and provide

encouragement. All to help the patient manage any obstacles during their treatment. For Lee Health I'm

Lindsey Morton. Return to index of stories...
