TRUMP COMMENTS FALLOUT-2 SHOT SS 2 SHOT

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP JUST SPOKE AT A MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR DAY EVENT THIS MORNING.

THIS COMES AFTER HE REPORTEDLY MADE A DERROGATORY COMMENT ABOUT IMMIGRANTS FROM CERTAIN COUNTIRES.

HE RESPONDED TO CRITICISM IN A TWEET THIS MORNING-

ADMITTING HIS LANGUAGE WAS TOUGH, BUT REDIRECTED WITH HIS OWN CRITICISM OF IMMIGRATION POLICY DECISIONS.

A SOURCE IN THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS THE PRESIDENT WAS TRYING TO MAKE THE CASE FOR A MERIT-BASED IMMIGRATION SYSTEM.

BUT CRITICS AREN'T BUYING THAT.

EVEN REPUBLICANS ARE DEMANDING A DEEPER EXPLANATION FOR THE PRESIDENT'S CHOICE OF WORDS.

NBC'S TRACIE POTTS REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

TRUMP COMMENTS FALLOUT-PKG

--- INSERT PKG ---

AT A WHITE HOUSE MEETING ON IMMIGRATION, A DEMOCRATIC AIDE SAYS PRESIDENT TRUMP USED THIS LANGUAGE -

EXPLETIVE COUNTRIES -

ASKING WHY THE US SHOULD ADMIT PEOPLE FROM HAITI, AFRICA AND EL SALVADOR

INSTEAD OF PLACES LIKE NORWAY.

Illinois :16-:23

"Can you think of any employee walking into any institution in america and saying these kinds of deplorable things and not being fired?"

THE PRESIDENT THIS MORNING TWEETING "THE LANGUAGE USED BY ME AT THE DACA MEETING WAS TOUGH, BUT THIS WAS NOT THE LANGUAGE USED."

"NEVER SAID ANYTHING DEROGATORY ABOUT HAITIANS OTHER THAN HAITI IS, OBVIOUSLY, A VERY POOR AND TROUBLED COUNTRY."

Illinois :38-:49

"To no surprise, the President started tweeting this morning denying that he used those words. It is not true. He said these hate filled things and he said them repeatedly."

REPUBLICAN MIA LOVE INSISTING THE PRESIDENT APOLOGIZE.

"Do you have to spray paint the N-word in the oval office or have a hood in the Lincoln bedroom to be a racist?"

IT COMES AMID NEGOTIATIONS TO PROTECT 800,000 YOUNG IMMIGRANTS FROM LOSING LEGAL STATUS IN MARCH.

Kansas 1:06-1:09

"We're so close, and I just hope that this doesn't get us off-track."

ALSO CONSIDERED OFF TRACK: THE PRESIDENT'S TWEET CRITICIZING A GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM THE WHITE HOUSE SUPPORTS, JUST AS LAWMAKERS WERE ABOUT TO RENEW IT.

New York 1:19-1:21

"The tweet was a mistake, the President is supporting the vote today."

MR. TRUMP TWEETED A CORRECTION, AND THE WHITE HOUSE BLAMED THE MEDIA.

LAWMAKER SAY THEY EXPECT TO HAVE A DEAL IN PLACE SOON.

HAITI BREAKOUT-SS IN TOUCH VO

THE PRESIDENT'S REPORTED COMMENTS WERE MADE ON THE EVE OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF ONE OF THE WORST NATURAL DISASTERS IN RECENT HISTORY.

EIGHT YEARS AGO TODAY-

HAITI WAS STRUCK BY A 7-POINT-OH MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE.

THE DEVASTATION NEARLY INCOMPREHENSIBLE-

AND THE LOSS OF LIFE -- TO THIS DAY -- IS STILL DIFFICULT TO PUT A NUMBER ON.

THE U-S GEOLOGICAL SURVEY -- AND SEVERAL MEDICAL JOURNALS -- ESTIMATE AS MANY AS 160-THOUSAND PEOPLE DIED.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXCTR WXWALL

ANCHOR AD LIB WX INTRO

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Forecast: Evening showers before a cool weekend

Weather this morning in Southwest Florida won't be that much different from the past few days. You'll head out the door to mild temperatures in the 60s with some areas of fog. A light breeze this morning should limit fog a bit more than the past couple of days.

The cold front we've been talking about for the past few days will arrive this evening after temperatures climb back to around 80 degrees in the early afternoon. Skies will be partly cloudy around lunchtime and progress to mostly cloudy by sunset. Expect late afternoon and early evening showers as the front passes over us.

The chillier air will take some time to filter in across our area so tonight will only see lows in the upper 50s and low 60s under cloudy skies. Clouds clear out on Saturday and we'll spend most of the day in the 60s. Windy weather is expected all weekend as the chillier air rushes in.

Temperatures will bottom out in the low to mid 40s Saturday night with a few inland locations briefly seeing the upper 30s. Highs will remain in the 60s on Sunday.

We'll warm up a few degrees on Monday and Tuesday and could even see some areas reach the low 70s but this warming trend will not last long. Another front is set to arrive in the middle of next week that will send temperatures back down to well below average. Pretty much all of this weekend and next week will be below our mid-January averages for temperatures. Return to index of stories...

FUGITIVE FRIDAY-OC-SS(5)

We're starting off our list this week with a repeat offender who's been a thorn in the side of law

enforcement for more than three decades. Willie High was arrested last fall for battery on a

person age 65 or older. After being released from jail, the 67 year old was supposed to show

back up for a court hearing in late October. But instead of following up with the judge's

mandate, High decided to avoid the proceedings and become a fugitive on the run. To date,

High has been booked 19 times in the Lee County Jail on several charges of the possession of

cocaine, public order crimes and contempt of court, among others. He is 5'9", 210 pounds and

was last known to be living in Dunbar. And upon his arrest, High will be held without bond.

And in Collier County, deputies are on the hunt for Josue Alberto Lobo Cruz, wanted on charges

of armed robbery, grand theft, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery. Lobo

Cruz, and a second suspect who has since been apprehended, is accused of robbing an East

Naples convenience store at gunpoint. Detectives believe that this 29 year old felon may also

have ties to several other robberies in and around the Naples area. He is 5'7", 150 pounds and

is known to frequent area gambling establishments. Although his last known address was in

Collier County, Lobo Cruz also has ties to Lee County and could be laying low in the Bonita

Springs area to avoid arrest.

Also on the run this week is David Smith, wanted in Lee County on charges relating to the

possession of heroin and being a deadbeat dad. Over the years, this registered convicted felon

has been booked 11 times on a variety of charges, including multiple counts of drug possession,

robbery and the carrying a weapon on a local college campus. Smith has also spent time

behind bars for child cruelty, after he struck a five year old in the face so hard that fingerprint

marks were still clearly visible on the boy's face days after the incident. When questioned

about the bruises and marks, S

mith said the child fell on gravel on the playground and that it

was all a misunderstanding. Smith is 38 years old, 5'9", 210 pounds and is likely to be hiding

out in the Fort Myers Shores of lehigh area.

And rounding out our list is Jeremy Wilcox, wanted for violating his probation after an arrest

for battery by strangulation. To date, this 30 year old felon has been booked 28 times locally on

charges including aggravated assault with the intent to commit a felony, resisting arrest, theft

and several counts of battery. In addition to his local jail time, Wilcox has also been sent to

state prison twice. He is a criminal registrant who is known to move back and forth between

Cape Coral and Fort Myers. He is 5'10", 176 pounds and has several tattoos, including the

phrase "Only God can judge me" with a jack in the box on his right arm, the name Malcom on

his chest, the name Jatravia on his neck and the phrase "Good Crimes" inked on his right arm.

And upon his arrest, Wilcox will be held without bond in the Lee County Jail. Return to index of stories...

PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS CANCELED A VISIT TO THE UK PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY-

SAYING HE WAS NOT A "BIG FAN" OF THE NEW US EMBASSY IN LONDON HE WAS DUE TO OPEN.

THIS COMES AFTER THE PRESIDENT'S DERROGATORY COMMENTS ABOUT HAITI AND AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

NBC'S LUCY KAFANOV REPORTS FROM LONDON. Return to index of stories...

TRUMP CANCELS TRIP-PKG

-- PKG --

THE US EMBASSY OFFICIALLY OPENS TODAY.

BUT THE PRESIDENT WAS ACTUALLY SCOOPED ON HIS ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE DAILY MAIL WHICH REPORTED YESTERDAY THAT HE WILL NOT BE COMING HERE TO LONDON TO OPEN THIS EMBASSY NEXT MONTH BECAUSE HE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE SCALE OF THE RECEPTION HE'D BE GETTING HERE AND HE'D REPORTEDLY DIDN'T WANT TO FACE THE MASS PROTESTS THAT WOULD SURELY AWAIT HIM HERE IN THE UK.

NOW JUST TO GIVE YOU A SENSE OF THE CLIMATE, ED MILIBAND THE FORMER LABOUR LEADER THIS MORNING RESPONDED TO PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TWEETING "NOPE, IT'S BECAUSE NOBODY WANTED YOU TO COME AND YOU GOT THE MESSAGE.'

WE DON'T HAVE ANY FORMAL REACTION FROM DOWNING STREET YET BUT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, THIS IS LIKELY TO BE A WELCOMED DEVELOPMENT.

POLICING FOR THIS VISIT IS GOING TO BE A NIGHTMARE AND THE PRESIDENT HAS OFTEN CLASHED WITH THE LONDON MAYOR SADIQ KHAN, WHO TWEETED THIS MORNING, THAT DONALD TRUMP IS NOT WELCOMED OVER WHILE HE IS "PURSUING A DIVISIVE AGENDA".

NOW THERESA MAY MAY HAVE BEEN THE FIRST FOREIGN LEADER TO VISIT DONALD TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE BUT HE HAS BECOME AN INCREASINGLY UNPOPULAR AND DIVISIVE FIGURE.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES, HE CLASHED WITH THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER WHEN HE RE-TWEETED A SERIES OF INFLAMMATORY ANTI-MUSLIM TWEETS BY A FAR RIGHT PARTY HERE IN THE UK.

THAT SPARKED CALLS BY SOME POLITICIANS TO ACTUALLY RESCIND THE FORMER STATE VISIT INVITATION.

AT THE END OF THE DAY OF COURSE THE TWO COUNTRIES ARE STILL CLOSE ALLIES.

S/ Lucy Kafanov/ NBC News/ London 1:22-1:33

"Donald Trump is still expected to visit sometime this year but in this political climate, this is likely to be one less headache for Downing Street for now. Lucy Kafanov, NBC News, London." Return to index of stories...

PEANUT BUTTER WILL STICK TO YOUR WAIST JUST AS MUCH AS IT DOES YOUR MOUTH, UNLESS THERE'S LIMITED, EASY TO UNDERSTAND INGREDIENTS.

"All you have to do is look at the ingredient list and if it says peanuts, that's all you need."

ADDED SUGAR AND OIL IS THE ENEMY!

MAKING YOUR OWN NUT BUTTER IS WHAT UT HEALTH REGISTERED DIETITIAN -- SHREELA SHARMA - RECOMMENDS INSTEAD.

"That's why the best kind of butter these days are grocery stores that actually grind your nut butter for you."

NUTS - EVEN IN TRAIL MIX - CAN BE A GOOD OPTION BUT READING THE NUTRITION LABEL IS CRITICAL SO YOU AVOID UNWANTED SUGAR, SODIUM AND CALORIES.

"The rule of thumb is less than 3 grams of sugar per serving is what you want to go with."

THAT IMMEDIATELY NIXES THE TRAIL MIXES AND GRANOLA BARS MADE WITH CANDY OR DRIED FRUIT.

"You want to go with any granola bar where you can actually understand the ingredient list that's listed on the back."

IF IT'S AN INGREDIENT YOU DON'T KNOW -- SHARMA SAYS THAT LIKELY MEANS IT'S ONE EXPERTS DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND EITHER -- WHICH ISN'T GOOD!

"You may not be consuming calories but you are consuming a product that's not natural and may have a negative impact on your health."

ONE WAY SHE SAYS ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS HURT YOU IS IT TRICKS YOUR BRAIN INTO CRAVING MORE SUGAR.
