Nat Reporter: Will you give an apology for the statement yesterday?

PRESIDENT TRUMP IGNORING REPORTERS QUESTIONS.

Nat Reporter: Mr. President, are you a racist?

AT A CEREMONY HONORING CIVIL RIGHTS ICON MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

AFTER REPORTS THAT THE PRESIDENT REFERRED TO AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH A VULGARITY DURING A MEETING WITH BIPARTISAN LAWMAKERS ON IMMIGRATION - AND INDICATED THE UNITED STATES SHOULD BE MORE FOCUSED ON BRINGING IN IMMIGRANTS FROM COUNTRIES LIKE NORWAY

LAWMAKERS IN WASHINGTON AND LEADERS AROUND THE WORLD LEFT STUNNED

IN A SERIES OF TWEETS, PRESIDENT TRUMP DENIED USING THAT SPECIFIC PROFANITY, AND TURNED HIS FOCUS ON DEMOCRATS, SAYING:

The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!

ILLINOIS SENATOR DICK DURBIN WAS IN THE ROOM.

Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois: He said these hate-filled things. And he said them repeatedly.

THE COMMENTS WERE CONDEMNED BY MEMBERS OF BOTH PARTIES --

Rep. Paul Ryan, House Speaker: Very unfortunate. Unhelpful.

DEMOCRATS WANT PROTECTION FOR THE NEARLY 700,000 SO-CALLED DREAMERS - YOUNG UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS BROUGHT TO THE U.S. AS CHILDREN. THE DACA PROGRAM PROTECTS THEM FROM DEPORTATION.

DEMOCRATS HAVE THREATENED TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT NEXT WEEK IF DACA IS NOT REINSTATED.

Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois: we have to get this done. i thought we might get a bipartisan agreement approved by the white house -- died yesterday.

THE WHITE HOUSE INSISTS BORDER SECURITY MUST BE PART OF ANY DEAL - INCLUDING FUNDING FOR HIS BORDER WALL - A KEY CAMPAIGN PROMISE.

IN WASHINGTON, I'M KRISTEN HOLMES. Return to index of stories...

FOR A FOURTH DAY, TEAMS OF MEN AND WOMEN WITH SHOVELS, DOGS AND LONG STICKS TREAD A FAMILIAR PATH THROUGH THE DEVASTATION ZONE IN MONTECITO. EVERY DAY, THE SCENE LOOKS DIFFERENT AS THE MUD AND RAIN WATER DRY OUT, AND AS HEAVY EQUIPMENT SHOVELS AWAY DEBRIS. BUT SO FAR, THE ONLY NEW THINGS THEY'RE FINDING ARE CLUES, NOT PEOPLE.

"We're using gps, search cameras but mostly just working our way on foot and manually searching the homes and debris piles."

"I've lived here for 13 years now nothing like this has every happened before."

LAIRD FOWLER AND HIS FRIEND SASHA WALKED AROUND THE HARD-HIT AREAS IN DISBELIEF. THE MUDSLIDE TUESDAY MORNING SWEPT AWAY A CO-WORKER AND AN ACQUAINTANCE - ONLY ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN FOUND.

"I think from what I heard they got carried down the road and they found him the next morning."

AMONG THE 17 KILLED IN THE TSUNAMI-LIKE CONDITIONS WERE A PROMINENT REALTOR, THE FOUNDER OF A LOCAL ACADEMY, AND TWO CHILDREN FROM ONE FAMILY WHERE THE MOTHER AND A THIRD CHILD ARE STILL MISSING.

"You can't take it in, it doesn't make sense. There's this big huge boulders and trees going sideways and it's the most scary, unsettling feeling you'll ever see."

THE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SHERIFF WARNED THAT THE NUMBER OF MISSING WILL KEEP FLUCTUATING, AND THAT'S PROVED TRUE: THERE WERE 43 REPORTED MISSING YESTERDAY - TODAY, IT'S ONE-EIGHTH OF THAT.
