ROBOT LIABILITY-PKG

ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE WHEN A ROBOT GOES BERSERK, DESTROYS YOUR PROPERTY, COMES AFTER YOU, WE ALL KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BE THINKING:

nats: "Where can I find a good lawyer."

BUT WHO SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE FOR A RUNAWAY ROBOT? THE USER OR THE MANUFACTURER? ONE LAWYER BELIEVES THE FUTURE OF THE ROBOTICS INDUSTRY HINGES ON THAT VERY QUESTION.

"Are you going to build a robot that is multifunctional if you're going to be held accountable everytime someone uses it for something wrong?"

THAT IS WHY RYAN CALO WITH STANFORD'S CENTER FOR INTERNET AND SOCIETY IS URGING AMERICA'S LEGAL SYSTEM TO RIGHT NOW GET A HANDLE HOW TO PROTECT CONSUMER RIGHTS AND STILL SHIELD ROBOT COMPANIES FROM A FLOOD OF LAWSUITS. HE SUGGESTS MODELING ROBOTICS LAW AFTER INTERNET LAW WHICH GIVES COMPANIES IMMUNITY FROM INFORMATION POSTED ON THEIR WEBSITES.

Bob: "Let's say in the future, I have a bionic arm. The k-9000 with action grip and let's say it goes haywire and hits you. Oh, sorry about that."

Ryan: 'That's OK.'

Bob: "Is that the type of legal situation you're talking about. Where someone has a lawsuit over my arm."

Ryan: 'Absolutely.'"

"imagine an elderly woman has rented a robot from hospital. what if neighborhood kids hack into it to menace. who's responsible?"

PLACES LIKE STANFORD'S ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LAB ARE ALREADY WORKING TO LESSEN THE CHANCE OF SOMETHING GOING WRONG: BY BUILDING SAFER ROBOTIC ARMS: WITH MATERIALS THAT ARE LIGHTER AND MORE FORGIVING IF THEY ACCIDENTALLY BUMP INTO PEOPLE. BUT WILL THAT EVER BE ENOUGH IN A SOCIETY IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SUE.

Bob: "in this situation right here, i'm on the bus. do i sue metro or the manufacturer of the robot?"

Ryan: "i think in this case might even sue the robot b/c it's that advanced" Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Winds will pick up this morning and be occasionally quite gusty into the afternoon hours as a cold front approaches Southwest Florida from the Gulf of Mexico. This southerly wind will also transport even more humidity into the region, giving the daytime hours a decidedly muggy feel. Boaters will have seas building to 3-6 feet with winds gusting over 20 knots. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect. Highs will be from the upper 70s along the coast to lower 80s inland.

Shower chances pick up by 3 p.m. in areas along and north of the Caloosahatchee River, and after 3 p.m. in locations south. Showers will be scattered, and some of the downpours will be heavy. Rain chances last through the evening and into the overnight hours before tapering off by early Sunday morning as the cold front temporarily clears the region. Overnight lows will be in the upper 50s with highs on Sunday under partly cloudy skies in the lower 70s.

The front inches back northward by Monday increasing rain chances once again. In fact, rain chances remain elevated through much of the next week. Highs will be in the 70s with lows in the 50s and 60s. No arctic chill is forecast for Southwest Florida through the next seven days. Return to index of stories...

CANCER AND OBESITY-PKG

WE'VE ALL SEEN THE HEADLINES: GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES KEEP CANCER AT BAY. BLUEBERRIES A CANCER CURE?

DESPITE THE HEADLINES, NEW RESEARCH SHOWS YOUR DIET DOESN'T REALLY IMPACT MOST CANCER THAT WAY.

there's not really one magic diet or magic pill or one magic food that's going to prevent cancer.

DR. WALTER WILLETT IS A HARVARD NUTRITION SPECIALIST WHO CO-AUTHORED THE BOOK "EAT, DRINK AND WEIGH LESS."

HE SUGGESTS ABOUT 35% OF CANCERS IN THE U-S ARE DUE TO NUTRITIONAL FACTORS, MOST HE SAYS, BECAUSE SO MANY AMERICANS ARE OBESE AND SO MANY DON'T EXERCISE.

OBESITY IS A PROVEN RISK FACTOR FOR COLON, BREAST, ENDOMETRIAL, ESOPHAGEAL, AND KIDNEY CANCERS.

BUT IT'S OUR APPROACH TO EATING, THAT'S OUR REAL DOWNFALL.

we don't pay enough attention to the quality of our food, we seem to be enamored with super sizing large amounts in place of high quality foods and that leads to excess calories and overweight and obesity.

SO GO BEYOND THE HEADLINES, EAT WELL AND EAT LESS, YOU MAY JUST KEEP CANCER AWAY.
