GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SUNDAY, JULY FIRST I'M JOE ROETZ
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY -
LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR STORM WARN 7 FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Sunshine will be in full force again today, sending afternoon temperatures into the low to mid 90s and placing the 'feels like' temperature close to 100 degrees.
We'll start the day under a mostly clear sky with temperatures in the mid 70s at sunrise, and then we'll warm quickly into the upper 80s by noon. Through the mid to late afternoon, our temperatures will range from the low to mid 90s except near the coast where the cooler Gulf breeze keeps our highs in the mid to upper 80s.
For the boaters and beach goers, our forecast looks pretty good. Like yesterday, the late morning and afternoon wind will be out of the west at 10 mph with the water temperature at Fort Myers Beach around 84 degrees. On the open waters, seas will run from 1-2 feet. Inland waters will again be at a light chop.
For the most part, the atmosphere will be pretty stable today, limiting the potential for afternoon showers and storms. With that said, we'll mention the possibility of at least an isolated storm or two during the peak heating hours, mainly over the interior.
Look for another relatively quiet evening and overnight with only a couple spots of rain before sunset. The air will again feel pretty warm and muggy through the late night hours with lows in the mid 70s by early Monday morning.
We'll stay in a fairly tranquil weather patter through early next week, and then we'll likely have a few more afternoon storms in the picture by Wednesday as the atmosphere becomes slightly less stable. Still, our rain chances won't be too impressive, and the chance of having to contend with rain for our Independence Day celebrations looks pretty low.

And marveled at the power fire has to transform the land.
S/ Gabe Payne/ Lost Cabin in Fire:24-:32
"I thought we was on another planet, like Mars or something. I mean there's just nothing left. Nothing green. It's just burnt dirt."
Red Cross volunteers were on hand to help those seeing the damage up close for the first time.
S/ Olivia Moreton/ Red Cross Volunteer:39-:51
"There's the immediate crisis and the shock and then, how do you pick things up and go on? And that's another big challenge later on. And we are to assist, help and find resources to meet those needs."
Payne was relatively upbeat about the loss of his recreational cabin, choosing to focus instead on what some of his neighbors have lost.
"I still have a home to go to and they don't. I mean, feel grateful for what you still have."
But the down days may come eventually for those who have suffered losses in the fires around the state and Moreton said help will still be available if they do.
S/ Olivia Moreton/ Red Cross Volunteer 1:16-1:21
"Call the Red Cross, let them know they were involved in these fires and we will assist them in getting connected to resources."

WE'RE BACK WITH A GROWING TREND TO REPORT, NOW THAT SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING. IT'S A NEW TWIST ON FARMERS MARKETS. TAKE SOME OF THE FRESHEST FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AROUND. AND ADD COCKTAILS. A GROWING NUMBER OF FARMERS MARKETS ARE KEEPING EVENING HOURS. NBC'S CRAIG MELVIN HAS THAT STORY TONIGHT.
"Nats of music from market off top"
AS THE SUN DISAPPEARS BEHIND THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS, THEY POUR INTO THE STREETS.
"I schedule my work around Thursday nights, so I can come here."
TO WHAT'S BECOMING A FRESH FOOD HOT SPOT WITH A NEW TWIST. JUST WHEN MOST FARMERS MARKETS CLOSE, THIS ONE COMES ALIVE, OFFERING GREAT PRODUCE.
"I had these and they were so fresh."
. AND MORE.
"There's live music, there's wine, cool atmosphere."
AND IT'S NOT JUST LOS ANGELES. EVENING FARMERS MARKETS HAVE SPRUNG UP IN MORE THAN TWO DOZEN CITIES.
. INCLUDING CHICAGO, WHERE THIS ONE IS OPEN FROM 4 TO 8 P-M.
"We wanted to hold an evening farmers market to give access to fresh fruits and vegetables to a whole other group of people."
"other than coming right to the farm you're not gonna get them any fresher."
BECAUSE PRODUCE HERE IS OFTEN PICKED JUST HOURS BEFORE, INSTEAD OF THE DAY BEFORE.
AND FOR THE FARMERS? THE NIGHT SHIFT ALSO MEANS. MORE GREEN.
"This is a little busier than the daytime ones."
FARMERS MARKETS IN GENERAL HAVE SURGED IN POPULARITY.
UP FROM UNDER TWO THOUSAND IN 19-94 TO MORE THAN SEVEN THOUSAND LAST YEAR.
"Like all farmers' markets, here it's about connecting customers with farm fresh, but something else happens at farmers' markets."
"It's a communal activity, to come, shop, exchange recipes, meet the farmers."
MARCEL VANOOYEN RUNS A NON-PROFIT CALLED GROW N-Y-C, WHICH OVERSEES 50 MARKETS.
HIS GROUP, TOO, IS NOW CONSIDERING NIGHT-TIME MARKETS.
"It's a natural extension that it's gone into the evenings."
FRESH FOOD AND FUN UNDER THE STARS.
A CENTURIES-OLD TRADITION. NOW BEING SEEN IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT.
