Return to index of stories...
RAIN PROSPECTS INCREASING
As of right now, high pressure continues to be in play with our weather.
It's created a very stable atmosphere full of sunshine, a few clouds, and little rain. That in turn has allowed our temperatures to heat up to the lower 90s, but when one mixes in the humidity - it felt much warmer!
There will be a day similar to Monday, we'll call it Tuesday. Mostly sunny, a few showers, and temperatures in the lower to mid 90s. As we head through the week, temperatures will maintain there place, but our rain prospects increase.
Boating and beach goers that means good news for you. We look to have a nice day, winds will be variable early and coming onshore by the afternoon. They'll stay around 10 knots. Seas about 2 feet, with a light chop for the inland waterways.
Fourth of July will be mostly sunny with scattered storms. Some soaking for your cookouts, so get ready. It won't ruin your plans though! Just brief showers that clear out after sunset. Get ready for the fireworks!
Thursday and Friday will be partly sunny with highs in the 90s, light winds from the east, and scattered storms. Moisture will increase for the weekend which will allow more storms to percolate throughout the day. Does it put a dent in the heat? Not a chance! Highs will continue in the mid 90s.

AN AMERICAN GRADUATE STUDENT ATTACKED BY CHIMPS IN SOUTH AFRICA IS IMPROVING TONIGHT

BUT AS ABC'S ALEX MARQUARDT REPORTS, IT'S REMARKABLE HE'S ALIVE.
SOME CALL THIS THE WORST ANIMAL ATTACK THEY'VE EVER SEEN.
Return to index of stories...
26 year old Graduate Student Andrew Oberle from Texas was upgraded from
critical to stable condition at this South African hospital.but remains in
a medically-induced coma.
He was savagely attacked by chimpanzees ,Thursday.at the Jane Goodall
Institute.
SOT LLOYD KRAUSE, FIRST RESPONDER
It was horrific, it was by far the worst animal attack I have ever seen/He
just shouldn't be here anymore after all that.
GFX
It all began when Oberle entered a restricted zone between two security
fences outside the chimp enclosure.
SOT EUGENE CUSSONS/GMA
As far as our expertise goes, that it was a -- a territorial defense. They
directed the violence toward Andrew, which they feel was infringing on their
territory.
GFX
Two adult male chimpanzees apparently became angry grabbing Oberle by the
legs and dragging him half way under the barrier, as he fought desperately
to stop them
The animals used the space provided by Oberle to escape.
As tourists looked on in horror the chimps dragged oberle one hundred feet
into a public space and mauled him.
When institute staffer Eugene Cussons arrived.he was chased back into his
vehicle.
SOT EUGENE CUSSONS:
The chimpanzee jumped onto the bottom part of the vehicle. um, started
slamming the bonnet, started breaking through the windshield.
Cussons fired a shot through the glass, hitting one chimp and causing both
to retreat --allowing rescuers to respond.
Oberle's parents are in South Africa.adamant the incident won't deter their
son's work
PHONER SOT: ANDREW OBERLE, SR, VICTIM'S FATHER
I'm sure if he is able to do it that he is probably going to be right back
there when he can / because that is what he wants to be doing.
STANDUP WINICK
Neither chimp involved in the mauling will be euthanized.though they have
been isolated since the incident.

PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGIST DOCTOR VICTORIA VETTER IS STUDYING HOW MEASURING THE ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF THE HEART WITH AN E-C-G COULD SAVE KIDS' LIVES.
"These children may have the cardiac arrest as their very first symptom. So by identifying them early and providing treatment and care, we can often prevent the cardiac arrest from occurring."

IF YOU'RE CAR'S WELL TUNED. AND YOU DRIVE IT AT CONSTANT SPEED. THAT SAVES GAS.
SO DOES LEAVING THE AIR CONDITIONING OFF. BUT YOU'RE GIVING UP COMFORT FOR MAYBE ABOUT A MILE MORE PER GALLON?
AND SOME OF THE OTHER STORIES YOU'VE HEARD.LIKE GETTING MORE GAS BY FILLING UP WHEN IT'S COOL OUTSIDE. ARE JUST THAT.STORIES!
IT'S NOT TRUE.
"fill up when it's convenient rather than worry about the time of day"
JEFF BARTLETT AT CONSUMER REPORTS. HAS COMPILED A LIST OF MYTHS ABOUT FUEL EFFICIENCY.
.AND HE QUICKLY DEBUNKS THAT FIRST ONE.
"Temperature has very little impact on the amount of fuel going into your car because the gasoline is stored underground where the temperature really doesn't change throughout the day"
HE SAYS THE ONE ABOUT GETTING BETTER MILEAGE FROM BETTER-KNOWN GAS STATIONS.IS ALSO A MYTH.
"No-name gas stations are getting the fuel from the same places as the big name companies. It's all gasoline and your car's happy to burn it no matter where it comes from"
KEEPING ENOUGH AIR IN YOUR TIRES HELPS A BIT. THAT'S MORE A SAFETY ISSUE THAN A FUEL ISSUE.
AND THOSE ADDITIVES CLAIMING TO BE ABLE TO STRETCH A GALLON.NOT REALLY.
"The EPA, likewise, has tested about a hundred different products through the years and it has not, yet, found one that will work"
OTHER EXPERTS SAY THE ULTIMATE WAY TO SAVE GAS IS TO DOWNSIZE THE TYPE CAR YOU DRIVE.
