HELLO-1SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

TODAY IS SUNDAY JULY 8TH

I'M JOE ROETZ

BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY - LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Not much change is in the forecast for Sunday, in fact a typical summertime weather pattern continues to shape up across Southwest Florida.

This morning, temperatures are starting off quite warm in the middle to upper 70s. A few patchy clouds will be overhead, otherwise plan on bright sunshine, which will quickly warm us to near 90° by midday. Clouds will be on the increase through the early afternoon hours.

A weak tropical wave will pass us to the south, however there will be a slight up tick in tropical moisture across the area leading to scattered storms primarily during the afternoon hours with the onset of the rain a little bit earlier compared to yesterday. Also, we'll more than likely see a better coverage of the storms, as rain prospects stand at 40% today.

Highs today will range from the upper 80s to near 90° along the coast, to the lower and middle 90s across our inland communities. Heat index values will be closer to 100°.

With the loss of daytime heating, any rain that develops should diminish through the evening as it pushes toward the gulf, leaving us with partly cloudy skies and lows in the middle 70s.

Tropical moisture will linger through the first part of the week, therefore enhancing our rain prospects during the afternoon hours.

With a southeasterly wind flow in place, expect drier mornings and our afternoon storm pattern to continue. Temperatures will be rather seasonal with highs in the 90s and lows in the mid 70s.

As for now, the tropics remain quiet. Return to index of stories...

Nats twins game

PERHAPS A HOME RUN IN THE FIGHT TO KEEP THE MINNESOTA TWINS ON LEE COUNTY TURF.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE COUNTY WILL GET STATE GRANT MONEY COMMISSIONER FRANK MANN SAYS IT NEEDS-- TO KEEP THE TEAM TRAINING AT HAMMOND STADIUM.

this is truly great news, it means we can move forward with a permanent contract and extend the time that the Twins are gonna be here hopefully for about 30 years

30 YEARS-- THAT'S THE LENGTH OF AN AGREEMENT THE TEAM AND COUNTY SIGNED--

THE DEAL DEPENDS ON THAT 15 MILLION DOLLAR STATE AWARD TO FUND STADIUM IMPROVEMENTS.

ACCORDING TO OUR PARTNERS AT THE NAPLES DAILY NEWS, STATE GRANT OFFICIALS SAY NO OTHER COUNTY APPLIED, AND THE MONEY WILL LIKELY GO TO LEE.

the grant money provides the only way Lee County could afford the team's requests, like new player training facilities, dorms and one thousand more seats

we've got one empty baseball stadium in Lee County, the worst thing you want to have is 2 empty baseball stadiums

THE COUNTY ALREADY BUILT A NEW STADIUM FOR IT'S OTHER HOME TEAM, THE BOSTON RED SOXS-- AND HAVEN'T FOUND A TEAM TO FILL CITY OF PALMS PARK.

MANN SAYS THE COUNTY WILL USE TOURISM BED TAX DOLLARS TO MATCH THE GRANT.

it keeps tourism alive which we desperately need, while our economy comes back together

WHETHER IT'S FOR A PERMANENT MOVE OR A TEMPORARY ONE

FILLING OUT A CHANGE OF ADDRESS FORM IS SUPPOSED TO BE EASY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE MOVING.

BUT IS IT ALSO TOO EASY, FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE STEALING?:

"I want to say it's scary, to have that done to you."

DEANNE BOYD SAYS IT HAPPENED TO HER-- A DISCOVERY SHE MADE AT HER OWN MAILBOX

"I received a letter in the mail saying if you put in an address change, if you didn't authorize this, to contact this number or go to your local post office."

BOYD SAYS SHE DIDN'T AUTHORIZE IT-- AND THEN CALLED THAT NUMBER, WENT TO THE POST OFFICE, FILED MAIL FRAUD COMPLAINTS, AND EVEN A POLICE REPORT

"They gave me the runaround saying they couldn't help me."

ALL THIS *WHILE* HER MAIL, SHE SAYS -- INCLUDING BANK STATEMENTS -- WAS DELIVERED TO SOMEONE ELSE, PUTTING HER AT RISK FOR IDENTITY THEFT

"I think it's absolutely crazy that if I have someone's address, I can just pay a dollar and not only have your mail sent to my address but I can actually put your mail on hold."

THAT MAY HAVE BEEN TRUE JUST A FEW YEARS AGO: AFTER A FLURRY OF COMPLAINTS THAT CHANGE-OF-ADDRESS FORMS WERE TOO EASY AND LED TO IDENTITY THEFT, THE POSTAL INSPECTOR GENERAL STEPPED IN.

AFTER A STUDY, THE REPORT ISSUED DIDN'T PULL ANY PUNCHES.

THE CONCLUSION: THE POSTAL INSPECTION SERVICE WAS NOT MONITORING FRAUDULENT COMPLAINTS BECAUSE IT HAD NO PROCEDURE FOR DOING THAT.

THE CALCULATED THE COST TO CONSUMERS IN 2007: A HALF MILLION DOLLAR TOLL TO VICTIMS

WHEN WE SAT DOWN TO SEE IF HOLES IN THE SYSTEM PERSISTED-- WE IMMEDIATELY BUMPED INTO ONE OF THE RECOMMENDED CHANGES: A FEE OF ONE DOLLAR FOR THE FORWARD REQUEST, PAYABLE ONLY BY CREDIT CARD.

OUR REQUEST WAS DENIED-- BECAUSE THE ADDRESS ON THE CARD DID NOT MATCH THE ADDRESS WHERE THE MAIL WOULD BE FORWARDED.

"It's a nominal fee for us to have a way to double check the credit card information against the address information."

TRUE TO POLICY- WHEN WE TRIED TO SUBMIT A PHONY FORM VIA MAIL INSTEAD OF THE INTERNET, WE DID RECEIVE THE REQUIRED WARNING.

CHANGES THAT ARE HELPING-- BUT WON'T ELIMINATE ALL MAIL FRAUD, EVEN THE POST OFFICE ACKNOWLEDGES:

"If somebody's really out to do you harm, they're probably going to find a way." Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WX

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

YOU MIGHT JUST SAY THOSE CLAPS ARE ONE-YEAR-OLD TOMMY OPPERMANN'S WAY OF SAYING THANK YOU, TO THE MEN WHO HELPED HIM ON THE WORST DAY OF HIS SHORT LIFE.

"It was a bad wreck and to see the two cars smashed up and to see a little body, every one of us there has children. So it hits close to home."

TOMMY WAS THROWN FROM HIS CARSEAT, 70 FEET THROUGH A CAR WINDOW TO THE PAVEMENT.

THESE MEN, WERE THE FIRST RESPONDERS ON THE SCENE TO HELP.

"He's a miracle baby. The distance he came out of the car and to see this, it's a great feeling. We don't' get this follow-up very often."

"Just on the basis of the mechanism of the injury and his accident, yeah it's amazing that there's barely a scratch on him now."

"TWO CROSSES NOW SIT AT THE INTERSECTION WHERE TOMMY'S MOTHER AND OTHER RELATIVE DIED. HIS FATHER DRIVES BY IT EVERY DAY ON THE WAY HOME. A CONSTANT REMINDER OF HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO BE BOTH A MOM AND A DAD TO HIS SON."

"My Wife was home full time taking care of him. Bathing him, feeding him, changing diapers. Now I gotta do both of those, I gotta do all of that."

ERIK OPPERMANN LOST THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE-- BUT HE'S THANKFUL THESE MEN, GAVE HIM A PIECE OF HER BACK.

HE SAYS THOSE GIGGLES FROM HIS MIRACLE SON GIVE HIM HOPE AND PROMISE IN THE TOUGH TIMES TO COME.

"He's getting back to his old self before the accident. Laughing and smiling, goofing around, eating more." Return to index of stories...

HEARTWORM DISEASE SEASON-OC

A WARNING FOR ALL PET OWNERS.

VETS IN TEXAS ARE PREDICTING THIS COULD BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY BAD YEAR FOR HEARTWORM DISEASE.

AS BARRY CARPENTER REPORTS, A MILD WINTER AND A BUMPER CROP OF MOSQUITOS MAY MEAN EXTRA DANGER FOR YOUR DOG. Return to index of stories...

HEARTWORM DISEASE SEASON-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

RILEY IS A HEALTHY-AS-AN OX FRENCH BULLDOG. THIS SUMMER HE AND OWNER LARRY PICCHIOTTI RARELY GO OUTSIDE--NOT EVEN TO THE BACKYARD TO PLAY FETCH BECAUSE HEARTWORM SPREADING MOSQUITOS START SWARMING.

"They'll attack up. It sounds dramatic but they are very, very bad this year."

"Mother Nature created this perfect storm for heartworms, it was a mild winter, followed by a pretty wet spring and we're in store for a really hot summer--that means mosquitos are pretty much everywhere."

STUDIES FIND THAT TEXAS RANKS IN THE TOP TEN IN HEARTWORM INFECTIONS. THE MOSQUITO BITES THE DOG OR CAT, THE LARVAE MIGRATES TO THE HEART WHERE PARASITIC WORMS CAN GROW UP TO 12 INCHES LONG.

"You can see right here is the valve, they're actually clogging up the valve here."

"Hi, Riley. Come on in, What's up buddy?"

BANFIELD PET HOSPITAL VETERINARIAN ANGELA ROBERTS SAYS TEXAS IS INFESTED WITH HEARTWORM DISEASE AND UNPROTECTED PETS ARE BEING INFECTED RIGHT NOW--BUT OWNERS WON'T KNOW UNTIL THIS WINTER WHEN PETS START SHOWING SYMPTOMS WHICH INCLUDE COUGH, LETHARGY AND DIFFICULTY BREATHING. THERE ARE EXPENSIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR DOGS BUT IF NOT CAUGHT EARLY IT CAN BE FATAL.

"They clog the heart up so the heart can't pump so they die of heart failure essentially."

DOCTOR ROBERTS SAYS PREVENTION IS KEY--ESPECIALLY FOR CATS BECAUSE THERE IS NO SAFE TREATMENT OPTION. SHE RECOMMENDS A SIMPLE HEARTWORM BLOOD TEST FOR ALL PETS--IF NEGATIVE DOG OWNERS CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN A MONTHLY TOPICAL OR PET MEDICATION OR TWICE A YEAR INJECTIONS. THERE IS NO SHOT THAT WORKS FOR CATS. DR. ROBERTS SAYS SOME PET OWNERS CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING.

"It's so frustrating to see a pet heartworm positive when all you had to do is give them a pill."

AS FOR RILEY--HE'S BEEN VACCINATED--HE'S A HEARTWORM PROOF HEARTWARMER.

"He's a part of the family, we do everything we have to to keep him happy and keep him safe." Return to index of stories...
