530AM~STORMWARN FORECAST-WXWALL

Some big storms offshore are producing lots of lightning this Tuesday morning, but most of these storm clusters are moving away from the Southwest Florida coastline. Despite all the rain over the Gulf, our morning will actually be pretty quiet. We'll see a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Don't let the dry quiet start fool you, though. We're expecting decent uptick in rain chances today as more tropical moisture drifts into the area, giving us a better coverage of afternoon and evening storms.

Another change we'll notice today is the storms will get going a bit earlier, so don't be surprised if you start noticing some dark clouds and rumbles of thunder by the lunch hour or early afternoon.

Today's storms will be capable of producing blinding rain at times along with lots of lightning and gusty winds. By tonight we expect most of the storms to fade and drift offshore, leading to a fairly dry and quiet overnight. Like this morning, however, we'll see the potential for a few showers and storms offshore early Wednesday morning, and some of this activity may brush our coastal communities.

Wednesday will offer up much of the same. Our rain chances will stay close to 60%, and the showers and storms will primarily target the afternoon and evening hours.

The extra clouds and rain will help keep temperatures a little lower, so look for highs close to 90 today and Wednesday. Return to index of stories...

THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE COULDN'T GET ANY TIGHTER!

A BRAND NEW ABC NEWS POLL OUT THIS MORNING -- SHOWS A DEAD HEAT AT THE MID-SUMMER STAGE.

ABC'S TAHMAN BRADLEY IS IN WASHINGTON WITH THE VERY LATEST. Return to index of stories...

630 ~ OBAMA CONGRESS-PKG

As the presidential race heats up in a dozen crucial battleground states, a

brand new ABC News-Washington Post poll this morning shows the contest is

dead even.

President Obama and Mitt Romney are tied among registered voters

nationally.

But the poll also shows troubling news for the President.

63-percent believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

After another slow month for job growth, President Obama is renewing his

focus on taxes, pushing to extend tax cuts for the middle class and raise

taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year.

SOT Obama

"FOLKS LIKE ME DON'T NEED A TAX CUT. WE CAN GO AHEAD AND GO BACK TO THE

RATES THAT WERE UNDER BILL CLINTON. THAT WILL HELP PAY DOWN OUR DEFICIT."

As Democrats try to build suspicion about Romney's foreign investments, the

President is personally calling on his opponent to release his tax returns -

- saying it's important for him to be an "open book."

Romney says he has nothing to hide.

AUDIO SOT - Romney

"ALL THE TAXES ARE PAID, AS APPROPRIATE. ALL OF THEM HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO

THE GOVERNMENT. THERE'S NOTHING HIDDEN THERE."

The new poll also shows most Americans continue to disapprove of President

Obama's handling of the economy and more than half the country faults him on

health care and immigration.

But still, 58-percent expect him to win a second term.

Voters' dissatisfaction with the President's performance in office is

keeping the race close. But Mitt Romney has not been able to overcome the

President's strong personal popularity.
